I am reaching out to my network here (ideally those in the tri-state area) in the hopes someone knows anybody with any job openings. I don't need a job. I'm not out on the street and I won't starve without it. I'm incredibly lucky to have the freedom and the ability to look for a new job while I'm currently at this one but, I am looking for a new job.

I am feeling unappreciated and held back by my current organization. I love technology and I am very pro-media. I feel like the world is passing me by because I am not in the center of it all. I'm hanging back on the sidelines doing the same exact stuff I've been doing five years ago. I'm not learning anything new, and the non-profit I currently work at doesn't care about the same stuff I do. They care more about helping people, which is fine, but that's not my passion. I am not a social worker. I'm a nerdy information junkie who loves media and technology. So it's hard to work for an organization that doesn't care about any of that stuff.

I didn't do great in school and I'm a pro at failing technical tests but, I have five years of professional work experience in technical support, training, web design and technical research across multiple industries including healthcare, non-profit and retail. I have posted my resume to resume review places and they said it looks great from a technical perspective. I have tailored my resume and cover letters to countless job opportunities online to no avail. I barely get any interviews anymore. The last one I went on was in October of 2017. I've had the privilege of interviewing at some really cool places ranging from various federal agencies, museums, hedge funds, to special high courts in the area.

I have already exhausted my small IRL network of contacts to no avail. I am currently going around in circles now. Avoiding smaller companies I see Job openings for since when I sent my resume in before it just went into a big blackhole and I've never heard back. Yes. I apply to 2-4 jobs a day and the last company I heard back from was that one in October. Instead of passing by a company on the street, and saying, "Oh I've done work with them," I'm saying, "Oh I applied there..."

It's a weird feeling walking down the street seeing companies you applied for. You end up discouraged and feeling like you aren't good enough. Any advice much appreciates.

PS I already have a very custom tailored approach to finding jobs on reputable job sites (glassdoor) so that's not the advice I need.

The one thing I have to say other than wishing you luck is that it does seem that in so much of America now everything depends upon who you know, that we have passed by any notion that America is a meritocracy. I long ago told my Microsoft daughter that about the best thing that she could have going for her is that people want to help her, I told her this when she was a soph at Washington State, and now that she is almost 7 years into Microsoft she says that this was about the best advise that I ever gave her, that she finds that this is how the world works.

,If I were you I would hurry up and take 20 years and build up my own business

Easier said then done. Plus I'm not much of a salesman.

I think that might be the issue here -- you're not a salesman (as in not selling yourself in the interviews). You seem to have good experience in your field, and you're obviously passionate about furthering your career, so the things you need to succeed are in place. Since you got all those great interviews, but not the jobs, themselves, I wonder if you might be shortchanging yourself in the interviews -- perhaps not letting the potential employer know how they could really benefit from hiring you?

But, I agree with you that you need to keep moving up -- don't settle for a job that is less than you want for yourself. Pick up a couple of books from the library on acing interviews, because you've got all the skills you need. It'll just be a matter of time, but I think it's great that you keep applying.

Maybe attend some tech shows where you can network with other techies like yourself.

Best of luck to you. It'll come, and you'll be off and running! Just remember that humans tend to live either up or down to the expectations they have of themselves, so set very high expectations for yourself.

I'm not the most technical person out there, which is probably why I don't do well in the technical portions. I can explain things to end users very well so that the dumbest brick of rocks can understand how to use things like power point, but if I want to go up to the technical level (speak with Sys Engineers or Developers on their level) I have trouble, it's just not in my vocabulary or in my way of thinking which is why I'm thinking of a career change to the media. It's probably what gets me past HR anyway. I have always wanted to go to tech conferences but most of the big trade shows are $1000s and requires a week off to go. I may have to start looking at that to broaden my network.

Where is the 'tri-state' area?

easy google search: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tri-state_area. Just another one of my skills. People are actually amazed all that I can research, when i show them it's just googling lolz

No need to be a jerk about it. From your link :There are a number of areas in the eastern contiguous United States known informally as tri-state areas.

Which is why I asked. Good luck finding a job with that attitude.

Dude lighten up.
The most obvious one is the NJ, NY, CT region.

If you have never tried sales, you should. You will know quickly if you can hack it or not, but it fits you it can be a life changer. A good rep gets job offers frequently. It’s a good bridge because you are in lots of offices making good impressions, solving problems, tracking orders, and taking **** for things you have no control over.

Two major requirements:
You have to be likeable. People buy from people they like.
You have to be a self starter.

Why, by golly I'm likeable. Just ask anyone around here. Okay, don't ask anyone around here. Ask over there. They'll tell ya. They don't know me. And I'm a self-starter, too. All I need are jumper cables and a gallon of coffee. And a couple of hits of meth, my special boots, a packed lunch with peanut butter and pickle sandwiches and some Gatoraide, an umbrella, some coke for when the meth wears off, and a couple of joints for when the coke wears off, two aspirin and a bottle of single malt Scotch to wash 'em down, and I'm good to go. I'm trying sales.

I used to work with a guy in a contract environment. Very smart, great skills, but a PITA to work with. Had a "boundaries" problem, could not stick to HIS assignments, had to insert his opinion in everything. Once contract was over, contractors would get hired in or told to hit the road. He was the first to be shown the exit, despite his skills. I got hired in.
As for myself, I got a bit militant over some safety issues and even tho I was right, I ended up making some enemies in upper management. I didn't get fired, but I never saw a promotion after that.
You MUST get along with most of the other employees. I say most but odds are that we will all have to work for some jerk whose behavior seems to be overlooked by management.

Your in the NY/NJ/Conn area and you can't find work in your area of expertize?
