Occasionally I find a new thread that I haven’t noticed before. If I have never been in the thread, my click will take me to the first post. Sometimes this is a few days old, after reading through a few pages, I find a post that I want to respond to. I still have not read through all the pages. Should I hold my reply and check the entire thread, or can I respond there and then, running the risk that my angle will have been covered in subsequent posts? If I join a long running thread in the middle, I feel that my post may be interpreted a sniping. But sometimes I get lazy and do not want to read all the previous and following posts. What does Ms. Manners say?

Is there a list of words that are infractionable in the basement? If a word I want to use is not listed am I clear? I did check the rules and “slurs” is a vague term.

You can certainly respond to the first post, but you do run the risk of somebody telling you, "Read the thread, stupid." People who are conscious of this major faux pas tend to soften the impact by prefacing their post with "Haven't read through the whole thread so this may have been covered, but..."

I don't know this "basement" thing you speak of. Is that Portuguese or something?

I rarely read more than two pages. Otherwise, I skim and answer a post I find interesting. Sometimes Inget told, as I have told others, “Hey! That’s been covered already.” I can take it. So can you. ;)

When I jump into a long thread that I have not been in before it is always because I have something to say on the OP. I say my piece, post it, and then start looking through the thread in reverse till I am bored. If I find a post I want to comment on I do so. This can lead to some entertainment if say 10 minutes later I am reading someone smarter on the subject who shows me that I made a mistake or was wrong because at this point I feel obligated to say that I have changed my mind, though this is rare.
