Had an appt with a highly recommended mobile groomer for Teddy this morning. I began second-guessing myself last night because the guy used a mobile van and didn't have a ramp. Teddy weighs about a hundred pounds, and he's eleven years old. He's a rescue. I've had him for about three years. During that time he's never growled, much less bitten, but I couldn't get over the fear that the stress of someone lifting him into the van and then on to a grooming table plus back down might just be too much for the old boy. Plus, when a dog is that big, I can't think it's very comfortable to be squished while being carried.

I asked him to just give him a good brushing and trim his nails on my deck or in the driveway. Said I'd be happy to pay his $65 fee for just that. No bath. But he wouldn't do it outside his van where he can restrain his charges.

I was given a ramp a few years ago and tried to give it back to the gifter when it didn't work with our car, but they didn't want it. So I donated it some time ago. Wish I'd have kept it now. Frankly, I'm quite surprised that a mobile groomer who says he does big dogs all the time doesn't HAVE a ramp. The guy says he's been in business for twenty years. That also made me think this guy's not accustomed to grooming very large dogs.

Since I would NEVER want Teddy to bite anyone, I just wasn't comfortable with the idea. I also don't know much about the first eight years of his life.

I was pretty confident he would be glad to just brush him and trim his nails for his fee... no bath, no drying. Sadly, I was wrong.

So off to Petco for a furminator and nail clippers. It will be a big energy drain for me, all things considered. But I don't see a choice.

My questions...

Do you think I did the right thing canceling?
How hard is it to clip a dog's toenails?

Here's a photo of the old boy.

Awww. this reminds me of when we had to clip Bart's nails when they got too long. :(

He was squirmish, but we got it done. It took both my mom and I to do it, though.

be careful you dont clip the part that hurts them. maybe get your google on.....pet rocks dont have nails that need clipping you know.

I have cats, so I don't know how it works with dogs, but have you considered one of those hand held pet nail grinders?

I don't know it they are more or less annoying to pets....My wife and I clip our cats claws with a regular pet nail clipper.

For our 18 year old Chihuahua, we have to keep stuffing treats in her mouth to keep her from biting us during a nail clipping. Otherwise it's pretty dangerous.

When the vet assistant does it, no prob.

Many vets also do grooming. much better to go to them.

alot of vets will also trim nails for free.

The only thing I know is do not clip them too short. It can be very painful for them
and they will bleed. We have a cat and clip his nails. Usually when he is in a sleepy
mood and do it quick.

This seems like good information.

The No Fear Way To Trim Your Dog’s Nails

Unless your pet is a very active outdoor dog his nails will need to be trimmed on a regular basis – anywhere from once a week to once a month.

That's an excellent link. TYVM!

A groomer should accommodate you and your pet. You pay them to do so. You had a bad feeling about the situation and rightfully cancelled.
I have had grooming appointments, arrived, saw something that made me uncomfortable and walked back out. One being a groomer working by herself, leaving the dog unattended on a table with only a neck restraint.
I do my own grooming, have a walk in shower that makes it easy for the dog. For nails and glands and whatever I feel uncomfortable with, I take the dog to the vet.

you made the right call
that 11 year old pup did not need to be loaded in that vehicle without a ramp
my 11 year old, 100 pound lap dog's hips are not what they used to be. no reason to place your dog in a precarious situation needlessly

find a groomer who will tend to yours and Teddy's needs
