Ok, so my amazing new daughter in law gave me her old MacBook Pro, CIRCA 2011 OR 2012. its what Im using now. This is my first Mac device and I am a little confused on a couple of things. Any help on how to navigate the keyboard with respect to shift functions, hotkeys, etc would be great. Like I cant get it to select the question mark

Gotta be a couple of people in here that are Mac experts. Also I noticed it has a couple of programs on it Ive never heard of. Garage Band and Safari. There, i would have put a question mark but the shift key just makes these....---------

Garage band allows you to make your own music. Safari is the internet. You can access a tutorial right on the machine that will tell you what's what. If you're a PC user, it'll take a little getting used to.

Its been a while since I had a macbook from back then, but the keyboard should handle the Shift key in the same way that windows does. There is the fn and cmd keys on the mac keyboard which acts differently than on Windows, but shift should still allow the question mark to be selected. Below I linked the mac shortcuts right from Apple's website. They should help.

i use safari and sometimes chrome on mine.

as for hotkeys, command + shift + 3 is the equivalent of print screen to your desktop. there are other ways to do it, too.

hope that you enjoy your macbook. i really like mine.

You can download other web browsers to replace safari, much like internet explorer, the web browser installed by default is junk. Garage band do not worry about unless you make music, for the rest apple functions are goofy, and their mouse functions seem to still be a second thought since they used a single mouse button for so many years, and ended it after years of mockery and complaints.

For the rest of your mac needs, well if you do not do heavy gaming, no problem since their gaming support is lackluster. If you do alot of word processing or graphic design, you are in luck, they do extremely well, for internet, they do terrible for flash site, well more terrible than windows anyways. If you do not watch alot of flash videos on the web or play alot of games, you will be just fine with your mac.

Safari is the IOS internet browser - the same thing that they use on iPhones.

We have several iPhones and an iPad, and I find Safari to be very nice to use.

I use Firefox on my PC - a Google search says Firefox is available for Mac also.

We have not used Internet Explorer for years and do not miss it at all.
