Electric bikes may soon be humming along national park trails

Outdoor groups strongly oppose the Trump administration order that would allow e-bikes on every federal trail regular bikes can go.

WASHINGTON — Motorized electric bicycles may soon be humming along serene trails in national parks and other public lands nationwide under a new Trump administration order, strongly opposed by many outdoors groups, that will allow e-bikes on every federal trail where a regular bike can go.

Sales of the bikes, powered by both pedals and battery-driven small motors, are booming, and some aging or less fit people have sought the rule change. It will allow them to whirr up and down biking trails in the country's roughly 400 national parks and other federally managed back-country areas.

Watch liberals oppose e-bikes, making them major hypocrites.
 
The progressive Democrat OPer wants the handicapped banned from federal parks. No surprise about that. :roll:

Why are electric bikes a bad thing.
 
I have an e-bike, they are great. As we get older, we need a little help, good ruling.

They offer a (greater?) potential for exceeding the speed limit of 20 mph on park trails with their potential for going *gasp* 28 mph.

Actually most can just go up to 20, you can always add to the speed with lots of pedaling.

I don't oppose e-bikes, and I don't oppose responsible use of them on trails. The problem is in my experience, there are often reckless assholes who ruin it for everyone. Those who are older and who need a little help won't be the problem, but it won't be limited to them. Twenty-something daredevils and incompetents on bikes but who can use an e-bike to fly around the trails will also rent/use them.

28mph on a trail is reckless in most cases. It would always be reckless on trails around here given the dense woods and short lines of sight in a lot of places, and kids and incompetents with e-bikes could fly UP and down hills.

You hope that there would be some planning and restrictions and guidelines, but for some reason I'm not confident that with the Trump administration any of that was done. The article appears to say parks have a whopping 30 days to figure it out....

The good news is if they're a disaster, the rules can always be changed. Maybe it will be a good thing. I do think for seniors and others who aren't very fit, they'll be a very good thing to let them enjoy bike trails. I just worry about people abusing the privilege. Maybe we'll stick to the GSMNP and the hiking only trails this fall...

I don't run my bike at that speed. When I am out for a nice ride, its about 70% me and about 30% the bike, I want to get 25+ miles in. My bike is not pedal assist, it has a throttle and pedals, my next one will be pedal assist where I can have the bike assist me at one of 5 levels. And go from a 36 volt to 48 volt for a bit more torque up them hills. I've done at least 2700 miles on my bike, seen a lot, and it has helped me lose lots of weight, while having fun.
