APOLLO BEACH, Fla. (Reuters) - Scientists in Florida have artificially induced reproductive spawning of an endangered Atlantic coral species for the first time in an aquarium setting, a breakthrough they say holds great promise in efforts to restore depleted reefs in the wild.

I think this is great news; think of the damage we might be able to reverse if this pans out on a larger scale.

Bum:

While on the surface, this seems like good news, there is always another edge on a two-edged sword. The replacement of natural coral ploys with genetically enhanced coral polyps may spread to areas not yet affected by climate and sea temperature/chemistry changes, thus further endangering unmodified natural strains of coral. Second, the coral polyps may be eaten almost immediately as the oceans are dying a death of trophism (food shortages all up and down the food webs). Even if they are hard corals as the linked article hints at. But with those two caveats, this may be a hopeful development.

Interesting article. Thanks for taking the time to post it for others here.

Cheers.
