IFF transponders for drones & their pilots?

Senators urge regulators to quickly approve drone identification rules - Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Two U.S. senators on Monday urged U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao to finalize a long-delayed rule that would require the remote identification of unmanned aircraft systems, or drones.

The U.S. Congress tasked the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in 2016 with issuing regulations or guidance by July 2018 that could permit the public, the FAA, law enforcement, and others to remotely track and identify drones and their operators during flight.

This had to come as drones proliferate. And as their operators remain hidden. Someone is going to make a lot of money designing, engineering & making these radar transponders or similar beacon-type systems.
 
You can only shut down major international airports so many times before the government comes along and kicks the **** out of you. (metaphorically)

A basic mode-c transponder would help with the safety risk (would alert ATC and aircraft to the presence of the drone) without personally identifying the drone user. However, identifying the drone user is the only way to actually track them down and get them to stop.

FAA is going to need to make them compatible with existing TAG and Transponder protocols so they can be used by air traffic control.
