U.S. advances review of Musk's Baltimore-Washington tunnel project - Reuters

(Reuters) - The U.S. Transportation Department on Wednesday issued a draft environmental assessment for a Washington, D.C. to Baltimore tunnel that would carry passengers between the cities at high speeds in autonomous electric vehicles, the first step in a joint federal-state review of the Elon Musk project.

Musk’s Boring Co has proposed a privately funded 35.3-mile “loop project” that would include twin underground tunnels transporting passengers at speeds of up to 150 miles per hour.

Between his cars & rockets, I wonder when Musk sleeps. I'd love to ride this system, a real forward step into the 21st Century.

I'm not at all sure if such point-to-point systems make as much sense as those with intermediate stops. It may well benefit Baltimore more than DC since the cost of living is significantly lower in Baltimore. I could definitely see a benefit from living in (or near) Baltimore and working in (or near) DC but not the other way around.

I took the Acela from D.C. to Metropark, NJ. The ride from D.C. to Baltimore was SRO, combined with the disturbing swaying caused by riding on century-old roadbed. D.C. to Baltimore will be a big commuter draw as D.C. is too expensive for most middle-income workers while Baltimore is not. Smart planning by Musk's team.

Regular ass train tunnel? Sure.

The “hyper loop” vacuum tunnels? Ludicrous.
