I first heard this and I said...I think they are being a bit too optimistic here. We shall see.

The whole reason of why he was left there was the most unscientific part of the book and the movie. Dust storms happen on Mars, yes, but the air pressure is so low that a storm there could never topple a multi-ton rocket or throw anyone around like a tornado on earth can.
