A new report released by McKinsey & Company indicates that by 2030, as many as 800 million workers worldwide could be replaced at work by robots.

The study found that in more advanced economies like the U.S. and Germany, up to one-third of the 2030 workforce may need to learn new skills and find new work. In economies like China's, roughly 12 percent of workers may need to switch occupations by 2030.

The report also provides insight into the industries that will be least impacted by robots and the skills needed to fill those positions.

The day may be coming soon when an associates or bachelors degree may not be enough to guarantee continued employment. Options include advanced degrees in the sciences or in engineering or gaining apprenticeship is high-value trades like electricians & plumbers.

If only twenty million are forced out of work domestically by 2020, it's enough to throw us into a full cancellation of the current robust economy, and if the figure of 800 million globally by 2030 is the metric, then that 2020 number is very realistic, it only requires one to narrow the skill sets that the more primitive 2020 style bots will replace.

PS: Jim Breyer is too optimistic. AI will have human level learning ability by 2025 AT the VERY LATEST.

Isaac Asimov’s rules of robotics ought to be in effect soon.

I agree completely. We have to start retooling our education system now or our kids & grandkids will become homeless.

So why is it the position of some that the US should allow ever more low skilled and low education workers into the country?

Why is it that some are promoting the creation of a permanent disadvantaged underclass? Far more so than there are jobs for already now, much less in the future?

Exaggerated view of immigration numbers.
No one's asking the US to embrace a permanent underclass of unskilled immigrants. They've been here for some time already.
No one's demanding that we embrace criminals either. Stop watching fear based media.
What we've been seeing lately are refugees.

MEXICAN immigrants have been LEAVING the United States.

And finally, repeating ad nauseum, there's two different issues, the refugees and the Dreamers.

This appears to be platform plank from the Democrat party. Having lost the middle class, they need to 'import' the next voter base, it would appear.

I'm not.

True, Mexical illegal immigrants have been leaving, but yet that still leaves a significant illegal immigration problem to be addressed, as of yet unaddressed by congress one way or another, not even the Democrats came out for the DACA illegals, much to their discredit. The administration was poised to make a deal, but no, the Democrats left that opportunity on the table.

Rise in U.S. Immigrants From El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras Outpaces Growth From Elsewhere

Lawful and unauthorized immigrants increase since recession

Aren't these the illegal immigrants that Mexico is allowing through their country only to present themselves at the US border? Why, yes, I do believe so.

And finally, repeating ad nauseum, there's two different issues, the refugees and the Dreamers.

Don't believe that I was addressing 2 different issues. Illegal aliens have no legal right to be in the US, they need to be deported, by all legal standards under existing federal immigration laws, and do their immigration legally, to which they'll be welcome into the country. Just have to do it legally, that's all.

Good then the democrats and pedophiles won't have to rape women and children any more, they will all have robots.

What a stupid story line "May" replace.

Party of “family values!” Get away from your glass house so no ricochets will hit......

Guess what? If the Right is going to continue disenfranchising poor working class and PoC, expect more of that.
You guys squeeze the system your way, we'll squeeze it ours.
Don't pretend that the Right doesn't act out of self interest.

If robots and AI lead to mass unemployment... Our current ideas of how our economy works how our lives should work, traditional employment etc.

Those rules simply no longer apply, the over the top Conservative Mr. Lebowski "GET A JOB SIR!" simply doesn't work anymore, so what do we do...

It'll be interesting to find out.

That deal was a poison pill but if you don't want to admit that, okay... you won't admit that.

Aren't these the illegal immigrants that Mexico is allowing through their country only to present themselves at the US border? Why, yes, I do believe so.

Most of them are refugees. We're experiencing a refugee problem, and no...we will not be able to take all of them.

You are aware that it takes YEARS to prepare for legal emigration, and yet the US system changes on a whim every couple of years, or with changing economic conditions. Most other countries have been using the same established system for eons.
Canada has a merit based system.

I'm perfectly in favor of a merit based system, but it mustn't cost fifty thousand bucks...or take ten years.

Robotics will not replace full employment, anymore then it hasn't done so already. people are so fearful it's unbelievable. It is economically impossible to replace human workers at any skill level permanently. automation results in massive increases in efficiency, lowering prices and stimulating increased demand, and increased demand will lead to more employment.

...And the relevant takeaway from that report is this: identify, develop and perfect the skills needed to ensure one is not among 800M but rather is among the remaining ~7.5B. Griping about what the robots may do or not do isn't going to stop them from being implemented.

What is there to say? When there's "writing on the wall," one'd do well to read and heed it.

Employment in the future is going to depend on your training & resulting skill set. What are you going to offer your future employer that he will hire you & pay you a decent salary? In pharma R&D, even a lab technician requires a Masters degree. Key areas for the future are IT (systems analyst, programmer, maintainer), robotics, agriculture (botanist), mechanical designer (engineer), electrician, plumber. All of those areas involve either schooling, training or apprenticeship programs. IOW, specialize in value-added areas where there is demand for those skill sets.

That deal was a poison pill but if you don't want to admit that, okay... you won't admit that.

How so? Because I did find it rather odd that Chuck and Nancy didn't even entertain the idea of a DACA deal. You'd think that they would.

Most of them are refugees. We're experiencing a refugee problem, and no...we will not be able to take all of them.

Agreed. The US will not be able to take all of them, adding that the US won't be able to take even a fraction of them.

You are aware that it takes YEARS to prepare for legal emigration, and yet the US system changes on a whim every couple of years, or with changing economic conditions. Most other countries have been using the same established system for eons.

I'm perfectly in favor of a merit based system as well. True, it shouldn't be shifting sands either, but that would fall onto the legislators (of both parties) that pass these laws that make it appear so or be so.

Dunno. Seems that a robustly growing economy float all boats. (4.5% GDP growth)

Far better, it would seem, than the 'new normal' (i.e. 1.5% GDP growth) stated as fact from some other corners.

Reading the McKinsey article is becomes apparent IF we really want to "keep" America Great we are going to have to educate our people. WE are going to have to reduce our debt and build up our infrastructure. We can't allow low taxes on the rich starve government programs the build up the middle class and poor.

The most valuable player is the player that makes the most players valuable.
-Payton Manning

To keep America Great, in the future, America needs to make the most people great and valuable. We can't continue to weaken the American worker so that the Capitalists have more Capital; which is the only goal of Capitalism. Concentrating wealth, by political policy, in the hands of a few is economic suicide. For Capitalists to prosper they need consumers … prosperous consumers … to buy their ****. Trickle down is TINKLE down the rich have been promising general prosperity but instead have been generally pissing on our heads.

The most valuable America is an America that makes the most Americans valuable. If we don't put our petty jealousy's aside and work towards that goal we can never be great.
