It began with sinkholes. Two of them, gaping mouths to nowhere opening up as if to swallow the town of Wink, Texas. As they expanded, there were fears they might collide, morphing into one giant void.

They first emerged in 1980, and things haven't gotten better since. Now, an unprecedented study reveals Wink and its vast sinkholes are just a tiny part of a much bigger problem – a vast stretch of historical oil fields that are heaving and sinking, covering an area almost the size of Connecticut.[/QUOTE

Just part of the cost of exploitation of fossil fuels.

Are these holes in the area where oil has been removed? Article doesn’t say or I missed it.

I wonder if the water is fresh, that is a very dry part of the state.

The should stock it with fish or turn it into a fish farm. Tilapia would do well there.

I think the oil bearing sands in Winkler county are between 3000 and 10,000 feet, so in the area horizontally ,
but not that close vertically. The weathering layer contains lots of limestone and caves.

That last line...thats why I respect so much the opponents of fossil fuel use. Because they see a problem and are committed to not be a part of the problem. They dont use fossil fuels and dont do business with anyone that might use fossil fuels to create goods or products they might have to use. People of integrity. Respect.

While it's not possible for an individual to quit using fossil fuels in the modern world, we do need to acknowledge the real cost of fossil fuels vs. renewables. it makes the latter seem a lot more practical.

Pretty sure I know what could be done about this, Texas-style: less government regulation and oversight.
