As Facebook faces it's largest scandal to date, with Cambridge Analytica, the shady, (Russian-connected) pro-trump group that has deep connections to the Trump campaign. After it was exposed to have information on more than 50 million unwitting users. Lawmakers are demanding answers from the social media giant, and namely, it's CEO who seems to be MIA. FB's stock dropped 7% today. If this continues, it could be the end of the social media giant. Especially if the scandal grows (which it most certainly will) as these things always do and the public loses even more trust in the platform.

Pressure mounts on Zuckerberg to face data breach concerns - BBC News

https://www.cnbc.com/2018/03/19/she...ce-mark-zuckerberg-at-facebook-calacanis.html

It's too early to tell if this is the end of the glory days for FB, but it's free reign of power is beginning to get looked at. At closing bell today. Facebook was still one of the world's largest companies with a market cap of around $500 Billion.

I doubt the overwhelming majority of Facebook users know about this story or care if they do. Facebook isn’t going anywhere for a long time. WAY too many people use it for that to happen.

I think it's going to be a big problem for them. They were granted access to the "entire data graph" but republicans were not "because democrats were on our side".

What this means is everyone's friend's data was given to the democrats, including your kids. The kids were targeted base on expected voting age then matrixed and targeted with "news" that fit the narrative.

The more that 1 million Obama backers signed up for a Facebook based app, the gave permission to share their friends list, thus exposing hidden young voters, 85% of them with unlisted phone numbers. Facebook provided the DNC an ideal way to reach them: People don’t trust campaigns, they don’t even trust media organizations. Who do they trust? Their friends.

This is called "targeted sharing" From there, the DNC used this data for send media to this gathering of contacts. 600,000 sign up's created 5 million contacts asking "friends" to vote, give money, watch poltical content tailored to their psychological profile in order to change their minds. We are not talking ad banners here. We are talking "information from your peers". However the "peers" had no idea they gave permission to share.

So that's my take, and it's going to start a downward slide in FB and a lot of others who are using data and algorithms to change society to their liking as seen from a corner suite in Silicon Valley.

I think FAANG is perilously close to screwing the pooch. Why? Because Trump and the Republicans are using it. When Big Data takes sides in our political system, we got a big problem.

More to follow in the coming weeks.
