SpaceX Falcon Heavy, launch today (hopefully) 1:30 ET

So we are adding a car to all the junk that is currently in space. Brilliant.

First of all, it was a new rocket on its first flight, usually they have a dummy payload of concrete or something as the payload, because of the risk, you don't want to put up a satellite . Second of all, the car will be inserted into an elliptical orbit past the orbit of Mars around the sun, so its not going to be in the way of anything.

This was a very important launch, this is the heaviest lift vehicle in the world, a complete success.

This car is supposed to go to Mars? Did we ask the Martian's permission?

It is not going to Mars, it is going to be placed in a heliocentric orbit that is near or past the orbit of Mars.

Yeah I can't wait to see this thing go up. what is going to be more interesting is if they can re-land those rockets.
if they can re-land a multi-rocket that is going to be amazing.

Say what you want about musk He is a genius.

Would it be fair to say that Elon Musk is a visionary who hires geniuses?

No argument with that, a visionary unafraid to gamble big. I got no problem with that, but calling that being a genius, not so sure about that.

And, a successful burn! The car is headed out to a new orbit.

Yeah, but what if the Martians consider even being that close to their planet a threat?

Absolutely one of the coolest things I have ever seen.

Those are pretty much too different things except that Musk choosing to act like the pre-Victim Culture Men has sure worked out well for him (So Far)...maybe that IS an idea from a genius.

i know people that work out at space X. they are really smart and talented people for what they do.
musk interviews everyone that is going to be hired.
He is involved in the hiring process.

He is the last interview if you get that far.

So, he has an eye for the right people. Good on him.

The burn last night went well, but actually is overshooting its destination. It's orbital distance is past Mars, closer to minor planet Ceres.

Elon Musk's Car Overshoots Mars And Will Head For The Asteroid Belt After Stunning Falcon Heavy Launch | IFLScience

Thanks to that third burn the car is now on an orbit that will take it 2.61 AU from the Sun (1 AU, astronomical unit, is the Earth-Sun distance). That’s almost to the orbit of Ceres at 2.77 AU, a dwarf planet and the largest body in the asteroid belt. Originally, it was intended only to reach the orbital plane of Mars.

Musk had originally said the car would survive in space for up to a billion years. However, it’s not clear whether this new orbital path will change things – there’s a chance Jupiter could cause the orbit to degrade within decades.

Hum. Now, if Elton has a real warped sense of humor, he would have added a tea cup into the Tesla's trunk.

Now that's funny.

Somebody updated the Roadster's wikipedia article to show a top speed of 11km/s :lamo
