With a battery system designed for 90 days how can anything ever built outlast it design by that much? No rechargeable battery can do that. Was Tesla correct when he said our atmosphere is fully capable of giving all the electricity we will ever need? So Mars's atmosphere must be doing this to the Rover???

All you need is your roof to have complete solar panels and a small solar field in your lawn couple that with 800 sqft of battery rooms and your set. But to do that for every home is not realistic and businesses wouldnt be able to do it at all.

No. Tesla was a nutjob.

As long as the batteries work and the solar panels can charge it can last indefinitely.

But then again those rovers move with the speed of a snail.

Solar panels should do the trick.

I guess Hanukkah wasn’t a one time miracle.

An amazing feat of engineering to be able to continue functioning in the harsh Mars conditions.

Bravo NASA, JPL and Beoing!

I hope that's sarcasm.

No, Tesla was a nutjob. He actually believed it was a good idea to project thousands of volts of electricity through the air along a series of balloons. He also thought wireless signals transmitted by Marconi were from aliens. And he had such a fundamental misunderstanding of electricity that he thought it could be transmitted through the earth. His ideas that worked were genius, there's no denying that, but he didn't achieve significantly more then his contemporaries such as Edison, Marconi or Hertz, and his ideas that didn't work were often bat**** insane.

But none of the equipment including solar is not designed for this many years.

good grief

No it is not because it was not designed to do it. That is one reason they are going to Mars to try to figure out the eternal energy.

Edison didn't achieve jack****. He hired other people to make his discoveries including Tesla.

Nonsense. The man had over 2000 patents to his name. Edison did a hell of a lot more than Tesla, even if you don't count his collaborations with other brilliant people like Tesla.

If it were that simple NASA would not be scratching their heads.

It's not that simple, you're right. Solar panels don't generate much energy. They need much more efficient ones.

Not nonsense. Edison bought a good number of his patents and had scores of assistants.

Tesla came up with AC while Edison was stuck on DC.

Edison hired Tesla to solve problems, and when he did, refused to pay him.

Tesla had an eidetic memory.

And also did a hell of a lot of work himself. Tesla used assistants as well, you don't think he built his magical electricity tower by himself?

Stuck on? My laptop, xbox, phone and car all use DC.

Didn't say he wasn't an arsehole.

Tesla had an eidetic memory.

Not as impressive as it sounds.

Huh? There isnt a self-destruct button on it. Machines have a shelf-life based on estimates and there are always exceptions. There was a story I read about a hundred year old lightbulb in a fire station running continuously without fail.

OK, I'll spell it out. Why are auto warrantees limited to 3-5-10 years? Why do appliances fail? Why do clothes get wore out? By "design" they are manufactured NOT to last forever.

How do you know "he did a hell of a lot of work himself?" Were you there?

Tesla used assistants but no where near what Edison had at his disposal.

Stop being obstinate. Edison was sure DC was the way to go for the power grid. Tesla knew better. And you know what? You can thank Tesla for the AC in your home that charges those 12 volt batteries.

Didn't say he wasn't an arsehole.

He most assuredly was. And if he refused to pay people you can be damn sure he took credit where it was not due. That's what arseholes do.

Not as impressive as it sounds.

A photographic member is damed impressive and extremely rare. Many true geniuses had this trait.

What are you a descendent of Edison? Otherwise I can't figure out why you're so hellbent on discrediting Tesla. BOTH men did a lot to develop things that were instrumental to our present modern day society.

You can't manufacture something TO last forever.

It was Edison himself who created the image of “Edison the prolific inventor”, a role he played for the media happily, but despite this, in almost every case in practice, Edison played the role of head of R&D and PR, and not the role of the sole inventor. Edison accomplished his goals so well, both in terms of self-promotion and bringing his products to market, that we still discuss his impact today. To understand Edison the inventor we first need to understand that most the inventions credited to Edison were actually the work of Edison and his team of inventors improving on old ideas (with his team doing most of the hands-on work)
