Don't be fooled using welding lenses as they must be a #14 to be safe and some manufacture don't even make them. I could only find a #10. Any "glasses" you buy must show an ISO9000 symbol. If you burn your eyes you will regret it for a long time.

We've got ISO 12312-2 filters from Explore Scientific LLC; hope to make it to the 100% line in the early AM just south of the Shawnee Nat'l Forest ;;

I've got the same specs.
Headed for central Oregon as the weather seems to be co-operating.
Only a 600 mile drive as opposed to my 1300 mile Nebraska trek.
Leaving Saturday, early morning.
Hope to be in totality zone---around 2 minutes out here---by Sunday AM.
Then I'll just wander around---I don't wanna use the phrase "loiter"--- until the big event.

Please don't. We've hit max. capacity already. Gas stations running out of fuel, available lodging is either non-existent or grossly over priced (we have an acquaintance who rented out her entire 900 acre farm for the week for about $650,000 - cash in advance). Roads are getting backed up, stores are turning into zoos... Head for E. Idaho, Rexburg, Idaho Falls area.

I dunno.....those places are much more inaccessible and their predicted weather conditions are not favorable.
Corvallis/Albany area is looking pretty good.
I'll have my own supplies and I will be camping out in my SUV.
All I need is a parking place.
Any big box store will do......maybe you could rent me a parking space in your driveway?

Edit: It appears your article is referencing people heading into various festivals on two lane roads.
Highway 5 all the way for me. Technically, I guess I'll be in western Oregon, not central Oregon--AKA The Boondocks.

I'm reading the Illinois DOT site right now for the latest. He's correct about Rexburg, ID you know. Real close to the Grand Titons also. That belt of Idaho is beautiful and not near as crazy as anywhere, OR.

You'll probably be fine in the Corvallis area. Someone will take in an old hippie.

I'll be just east of Carbondale, IL; a complete zoo renting out dorm rooms. I'm reading of 200,000 viewers OTR just in our small section of IL. St. Louis and Nashville will also be nuts ...

Eclipse traffic already backing up in Central Oregon; East of Prineville, traffic backed up 14 miles Wednesday night

I've been hearing rumors of cannibalism!

We have a lot of friends who are making that same mistake, and have already got reports from them of just how insane the traffic.

We were thinking of that as well, but will now likely be at the cascades behind Pothole Dome in Tuolumne Meadows to catch the eclipse right next to Unicorn Peak.

Not exactly on the trajectory, but still pretty good w/out the headaches.

I'll be at a friend's house who lives just south of Smith Rock. Show up early and put on some breakfast and enjoy the show without all the shadow-chasers.

I read they must be at least number 12 strength, though some may find that a bit uncomfortable. I also read in the same article that number 14 may be too dim, and most prefer number 13. I'll see if I can dig up that article.

There are no places to park RVs. People like you are the problem here. You come unprepared, thinking that "I'll just find a place to park." and when you get here, you find out that there aren't any or end up parking on the street and congesting our neighborhoods.

The stores have signs up informing people that they can't park there,

Says the guy with the fried retinas.;)

This same eclipse is coming back in 7 years more north towards me. I got my best man's son two viewing glasses, one within a booklet. Our town was the only one in at least a 60-mile radius to have them. There are also many recalls on glasses out from online firms ...

Your advice on Idaho is pretty sage. I'm hoping for a farm field south of the Shawnee Nat'l Forest, east of Carbondale, right on the perfect 100% totality line. Missouri will be even worse. We have plenty of info on line from our State Police and DOT ...

No, stay away. My son lives in Pocatello, he says it's nuts what people are paying to stay there.

SUV....not RV. Think of it as a station wagon.

As I've already noted, I won't be in YOUR area, parking on YOUR street, congesting YOUR neighborhood.
Now, go outside and yell at those kids to get off YOUR lawn!

Once again, I'm nowhere near YOUR neighborhood.

Pretty funny. I'll bet some of those oddball vans and buses really got your blood pressure going, huh?
Interestingly, most of the FB comments were pretty positive.
Not everyone is such a grump......are those kids off YOUR lawn yet?

I'm not getting anything from this FB post.
If stores don't want anyone parking, that's their right.
There are lots of country roads in the Albany-Salem area as opposed to bumfock Oregon.
Not all of them are populated by grouchy old farts.
Quick!!!......make sure those kids are gone!!!

We have a lot of friends who are making that same mistake, and have already got reports from them of just how insane the traffic.
At this time Hwy 5 in Oregon looks good....for now.
All of the congestion has occurred on country roads headed toward some sort of festival(s).
Which evidently irritates a few of the local cranks.

We were thinking of that as well, but will now likely be at the cascades behind Pothole Dome in Tuolumne Meadows to catch the eclipse right next to Unicorn Peak.

Not exactly on the trajectory, but still pretty good w/out the headaches.

Great venue, most definitely.
I'm looking for totality---once in a lifetime and all that---so I'm heading north.

250+ miles further and I'll bet those roads jam up also.

OREGON OR BUST

It's gonna be busy everywhere.
I'm going to enjoy the spectacle.......terrestrial and astronomical.

Naw......some people are just old coots.......NIMBYS if you will.
Fortunately, an eclipse only occurs in a given spot every 375 years on average.....he'll have some time to cool off.
Carbondale is really defying the odds.

I leave Sunday AM for my brother's downstate. Leaving very early Monday AM to get a good spot, east of the madness in Carbondale; carbon (dale) coaling of course being a huge industry here up until about the time Nixon signed in the EPA ;;
