BBC - Future - Nasa?s ambitious plan to save Earth from a supervolcano

Seems completely pointless to me. As long as we keep scorching the world with Carbon Dioxide what is the point in trying to throw buckets of water out of the Titanic.

Let's deal with climate change instead of tearing up up one of the great natural wonders of the country with lots of digging.

Did you even read the article? They are proposing making it into a gigantic environmentally friendly geo-thermal power plant.

Its a good way to diffuse the stored energy.

It is dangerous to play with that fire...

but 20 of those fires are going to blow up on us if we dont

Not necessarily.

The earth is far more geologically stable than the last time these super volcanoes erupted.

There will come a day when the earth becomes too geologically stable. When that happens, it will stop being capable of supporting life. Why would we want to hasten that time by hastening the stability?

the last 2 weer less then 100 thousand years ago and this would not speed up the end of the magnetosphere that much if at all

so to save lives and avoid massive devastation is why

*spews more greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere* UNSTABLE IS GOOD!!

We're not going to change the stability of the earth's mantle with freaking geothermal power plants.

And how do you know that?? Can you support this claim?

This plan would involve generating a very large amount of carbon-neutral energy sooooo

But it would also be the worlds largest steam radiator raising the temperature of the atmosphere.

Exactly. A super volcano eruption might be the trigger that stops global warming and starts a cooling trend undoing everything the Know it All are screaming about.

Or if we cool the earth too much we could disrupt our magnetic field and then we won't have to worry about global warming anymore.

I wouldn't worry about cooling the core that much, but yes. If we lost our magnetic field, life on earth would become extinct.

I guess since the oceans haven't done it yet it make take a lot more water. I wonder if injecting a bunch of water into the magma may trigger an eruption. Of course the Know it All couldn't possibly be wrong today even though our history has shown how often they were wrong in the past. When we look back a 1000 years from now the people will be amazed how we knew everything today.

The evidence is that, well no you can't.

I don't care what someone like yo who just recites the pundits and never read the peer reviewed papers believes.

i don't have tome to humor deniers of science like you.

I will get to it if I find the spare time.

Telling that you don't know such facts....

I personally find when someone whines and say 'go look it up yourself', it means they don't know what they are talking about. Indeed, that is one of the prime factors in the BS detector.

In general, I agree, unless it is something from years past and now difficult to find.

When it comes to science, if it is 'years past' and 'hard to find', it is likely to be misremembered, or bad science.

Luke...

The confirmation bias is string in this one...

I totally agree with you there. Injecting water at a high force into a volcano doesn't sound very smart at all. They don't know what's deep in there, it's speculation. Please don't speculate with everyone's future.
