.... expected by 2020

THERE is a one in eight chance that the Earth will be hit by a huge solar storm by 2020 which could potentially leave the world without Internet, phone service and many more services that modern-day humans rely on.

You might think liberals are going nuts now over the Trump win....if the above ever happens, complete insanity will take them over. :lamo

We had something similar happen between 1999 and 2000. Frankly, the end of the world stuff turned out to be highly overrated.

So you don't use any modern technology?

I'm not too worried about this.
I predict this huge solar storm will be easily overwhelmed by one of the Donald's massive tweet storms.

...because only liberals use silly things like electronic devices?

Only liberals know how to use them. Cons? Unless the directions come with pictures? Not so much. ;)

Anyway Y2K. I lived through that, I even was in the business of keeping the whole earth from being destroyed. Or similar BS of what we were being told was going to happen. What a scam and a farce.

More pranks by Zod.
Buy Etchi-Skecth while you still can!!!

If you ever hear of one coming, put your critical electronics that fit in your microwave and keep the door shut (and it unplugged) until it is over if you have no place else to store them. Of course, if it is a telephone, it is possible you will not have a cell grid to use it, but you never know. Microwaves are about the only shielded spot in most homes. It never hurts to keep old microwaves around in the basement for that reason. Personally, not much of my electronics will fit in a microwave oven.

The potential threat of a Carrington-scale solar flare is known and real. How bad it would be is uncertain, but it could be as bad as an EMP.

This is the first I've heard of a 1/8 chance of one by 2020 though... didn't think they were that predictable.

We "dodged" one (ie it missed us) that could have been on that scale within the past couple years IIRC...

The good thing about them is that they will charge all your batteries one last time. You won't have anything to run on those batteries though.

It was a third of the entire way around the sun from us. Which means the closest point of closure it ever got to us was the surface of the sun.

Ok, so it missed by a comfortable margin.

Doesn't mean the next one will, or that if that one had hit it wouldn't have been bad.

I'm skeptical of the 1/8 chance figure. Space is big.

when space farts, no one can hear what i had for dinner. so it goes. good night, and good luck.

Actually most of the modern electronic devices in your home are sheilded to a degree, but good luck trying to fit your cell phone into your smart TV.

The microwave idea is a cool option, never thought of that one
Its also relatively easy to build a sheild room, ( faraday cage )

I am also; as I mentioned, this is the first I've heard of such a figure, and I didn't think flares were all that predictable.

Just saying, the potential threat is real, and we'd be wise to harden our power and commo grids for both this and EMP.

We probably won't, though, until after something happens.

Gotta save our cash for that half trillion dollar wall

WIPE OUT modern technology?

See you there guys... I'm ready..

Never heard of a Faraday Box, have you, you can shield devices that can be used to recharge batteries and devices you currently use. You can build your own using simple and inexpensive items easily available. Think ahead, it leads to less inconvenience.

I have. A friend of mine is an RV salesman who likes to pitch what ifs to preppers.
