Tesla unveils new solar roofs

I think its a great idea if it can be as cheap as he said would be.Because it makes no sense for someone to get a solar roof if it costs more than the lifetime of electrical costs through a power company and traditional roof costs.

However I noticed some concerns in the youtube comments section.

1.How will it handle snow,ice and hail? Dropping a weight on it is one thing.Being bombarded with with hail or having snow or ice sit on top of it is another thing.

2.Are these tiles like hooked in a series where if one tile goes out then the whole thing doesn't work or are they like hooked up in a parallel so if one tile goes out the rest will still work?

3.How will it handle the weight of an average person? Because repairs and maintenance will eventually have to be done.The glass tiles will need to be cleaned to maintain efficiency and damaged tiles will have to replaced.

4.How easy is it to replace broken or malfunctioning tiles? Can a broken tile be easily popped out or will a whole section have to be removed at a time? Will power to the whole house have to be shut off to prevent shock?

5.Can these tiles handle temperature and weather extremes? Like high and dry temperatures one part of the year, freezing and wet temperatures another part of the year.

My hunch is they've designed the product with these things in mind. I would expect that from a Musk product. They'll likely have something like a 10 or 20 year warranty. If the costs are true they have a homerun
 
Well it seems a lot more sound than those stupid solar roadways.

A ten year roof? No thanks. They'll need to last 25 to 30 years to be practical.

As we detailed earlier this week, the Model X performed exceedingly poorly in a recent Consumer Reports profile on reliable car brands. Labeling the Model X as “more showy than practical”, the report listed out a number of problem areas that it found with the car, including the vehicle’s Falcon-wing doors, locks and latches, power equipment, in-car electronics, and climate system.

Addressing such complaints during the company’s earnings conference call yesterday, Tesla executives made a point of noting that Model X reliability has improved drastically over the past few months.

Newest model with new technology in falcon wing doors is the reason. Two common reasons for bad scores in the auto industry. The model x is already drastically improved from the first ones that came off the line. Why didn't you quote the following articles on the Model S(you aren't biased are you?):

So you understand the problem then.

THis guy can say anything he wants, but before I take it seriously the product needs to be in the hands of people who might possibly be credible, for enough time for them to get a good look at it and make an evaluation.

You can say that on any product, at least Musk has a track record of success. Ask the Tesla shorters.

I dont care how brilliant he is, he is spread way too thin.

This is not likely to end well.

I think 80% of the cars issues came from outside vendors contracted to make parts. the falcon door mechanism was one of those parts.
they actually sued the company because they came out afterward and said they couldn't do it.

I agree though before you can take them seriously they need a huge QOS rehab.

And just where is all the excitement in the press? No one seems to care. Do we really want to put solar tech in a roof that is to last decades when solar tech of five years ago is massively out of date? Why would we? I think this is the problem with the plan. That and the fact that people on average only stay in a house a few years, and a Musk Roof will almost surely hit resale values, because it is not proven..... buying a house with a Musk Roof will be stepping up to risk.

The roof will raise the home value because of lower electric bills, better looking, no need to ever replace it. Why buy anything ever as later generations of products tend to improve. And as Musk explained in the video people will want to buy because they will do the math and see it's in their best interest(if the costs are as low as he implied). And the Tesla brand is MUCH better than most brands out there. You guys act like its reputation is built in 1970/80's Taiwan. There is a reason why almost 400,000 people pre-ordered the model 3 putting down $1000 deposits the first week after announcement on a car at least a year away. They don't do that for Ford or GM. And there is a reason why the Model S is rated number one in customer satisfaction in Consumer Reports.

" Free electricity " ....thats how Solar is being adverized in my neck of the woods. Nothing free about it of-course.

Solar will take off as soon as its practical and cost effective to install and maintain. Until then, no one's buying into the hype.

Musk wants to travel to Mars....Gods speed Musk. I think he's been pulling the wool over peoples eyes for years now.

Well sure we can take the sellers word for how long it will last, both as a roof and as an electricity generating device, but I would not recommend it. My money would not go into the scheme till the Musk Roof has been in use in my weather environment for Ten years or more. As for quality the problem is that Musk products have too often had low quality, and that this entire type of roof as never been used before, we have no real life experience with it. Now hopefully Musk has had a lab or three try to beat it up with accelerated aging to get some kind of feel for how it might last, but then again this is just the kind of step that Musk routinely skips in the drive to be fast. Think is Musk is not the one potentially taking the fall for this particular risky choice (if I am right that minimal testing has been done cause that would take too long), it's the customer.

Not really. If all the roof does is keep the weather out then you are even. If it actually produces power such that it nullifies a power bill then you are ahead of the game. Elon Musk isn't the only one with the solar roof idea, hell he isn't the first several roofing materials manufacturers started looking at making a solar shingle. Some are even selling them. The best way to go solar IMO is to go steel roof and then a good quality panel set up so that a panel failure doesn't take down your system. I have a grid tied system that I can run independent if I want. (Huge battery bank of older 12volt and 6volt batteries that I have recovered and refurbished. Also a diesel generator backup.) I have a very small bill. I can have a zero bill if I want.

Not really. I live just out side of a major City and no one's putting Solar panels on their homes and Comercial properties aren't bothering with it either.

Again, its not practical or cost effective and all the ideological driven sales pitches in the world wont make it that way.

I agree I think he tends to rush things to get them done and doesn't pay attention to all the details.
he is stretched to thin with everything he is doing.

There was a report that came out today that NASA was concerned with the way that spacex fuels it's rockets. that explosion was caused by a improper hydrogen fill. something didn't go right and it started
leaking and exploded in the secondary stage. They are having a big meeting to go over refueling procedures.

musk has really cool idea's but they are never fully fleshed out. He is under the gun to get launching again.
