Going to Mars is the dumbest idea any human has ever had

You can't stay in the cradle forever - at some point you have to leave the crib. You can't live at home forever - at some point you have to move out.

Not every undertaking or venture yields fruit right away. It's human nature to seek out greener pastures, and even if there aren't any around we can still try to make them.

We don't need to be wasting money on Star Trek fantasies until we fix climate change and end mass starvation.

Nobody starved because of space travel.

I'm a little late and it's probably already been covered but I'll have a go.
Kobie more or less "nut shelled" it.

It gives us to opportunity to test ideas, equipment and people against the rigors of space and unventured environments and social situations.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

It's a small step in the infancy stages of post earth colonization.

Agreed.

Even if Mars turns out to have no resources for a self sustaining colony and no resources of value that it makes sense to haul all the way back to Earth, the journey itself, the capabilities developed for that journey, the scientific and engineering advancements to solve problems that we'll need to solve for Marc, and the step after Mars and the step after that even, will make it well worth doing.

We need to shoot past the barriers of a place like Mars. Mars doesn't hold life suitable to the human condition, and it's not all that far from the same make up ""materially speaking" than our own moon. What are we going to do there after we set up camp...............take pictures?

It's a no win...................... other than stroking our egos.

Learn about the place.

That's what we did with the moon.

Need to learn to walk around the block before jogging around the city.

The conquering of the challenge to get there in back, safely, learn what additional challenges face humans that long in a spacecraft in the environment of inter-planet space.

It's well worth doing, but not on a continual basis.

Long term on a less hospitable planet is useful also. No guarantees we'll ever have another planetary option you can just walk around freely on. Gotta figure out the best way to grow potatoes with poop and Martian dirt.

LOL. Yup. Noticed that one too. Pretty good movie.

Nobody starved because of space travel.

So it was physically impossible for space exploration funds to be spent feeding the starving...?
News flash, people starve daily

With or without the existence of space travel, yes.
