7 Men Attack Teenager in Russia for ‘Lesbian’ Appearance

18 year old Yekaterina Lysikh of St. Petersburg, was hospitalized with bruises and
a concussion after a group of men attacked her over her “lesbian appearance.”

12/12/19
A group of seven men attacked and beat an 18-year-old girl in St. Petersburg after insulting her over her “lesbian appearance,” local media reported earlier this week. According to a study by the St. Petersburg-based Vykhod LGBT center, at least 149 people suffered homophobic attacks in the city in 2018, including 62 who were attacked on the street. Activists tie the violence to Russia’s 2013 law banning “gay propaganda among minors” and anti-LGBT rhetoric on state television. In the latest incident, Yekaterina Lysikh, 18, was attacked and beaten by a group of men who had pursued her and her three friends into a cafe after harassing them on the street and trying to take their belongings. “They started to insult us with harsh language because the girls with us have a non-typical appearance. They started to call us names, saying things like: ‘What’re you, lesbians?’,” the Bumaga news website cited Alina, one of the girls in the group, as saying. A video posted by the Baza Telegram channel shows Lysikh running up to the group of men before being punched in the face and falling to the ground. Lysikh was reportedly beaten after she stood up for one of her friends, who was punched by the men while trying to get out her pepper spray.

The victim filed a police report over the incident while in the hospital with a concussion and bruises, one of Lysikh’s friends — who asked to be called Rita Kell — told The Moscow Times. On Thursday, Baza reported that police had detained and charged three males, aged 16 to 19, for attacking Lysikh. “The detainees admitted that they didn’t like how Yekaterina had been holding hands with her friend,” Baza reported. Since she first reported the attack on Twitter earlier this week, Kell says she has faced an avalanche of online criticism from men who have questioned the details of the story. “People are saying the girls are themselves to blame… while others are saying that LGBT people and feminists should be beaten in this manner,” Kell said. “The level of misogyny and lesbophobia in our country really makes us fear for our lives,” she added.

Members of the LGBT community and foreign migrants and regularly attacked with violence in Russia. Since this is tacitly approved of by the Putin regime and the Orthodox church, little is done about these attacks. In many cases, police won't even file a report or investigate such attacks because they know their superiors will dress them down for wasting police time and resources.

It's a sad state of affairs. The difference in treatment toward LGBTQ people in the US between 1979 and 2019 is almost a tale of 2 countries, but even here, transgender people are banned from serving in the armed forces and often can't use the restroom that matches their identity without the toothless pitch and fork mob threatening them. People can be fired for being gay in many states. The American right is still engaged in an active, open assault on LGBTQ civil rights. We still have a long way to go, but the situation is even worse in most of the rest of the world.

One of the reasons why the American right supports the Putin regime is the above. They also dovetail on many other repressive social issues.

Russia is not a developed country. It's a "country in transition".

Projection is pretty common in life in general, but when it comes to politics, I've noticed that the right criticizes its opposition for characteristics that it has itself more frequently and louder than most. They call Democrats fascist while they try to restrict the rights of minorities. They rail against Democratic corruption while they savor Trump's corruption like a $200 steak. I could go on and on, but when they criticize the totalitarian aspects of Russia, which has become super trendy over the last couple weeks (conservative media obviously updated the script of the brain dead), all they're doing is reflecting a valid criticism directed at them. I've heard a number of Republicans tell Democrats recently that they're playing into Russia's hands by opposing Trump. If that isn't a diagnosable symptom of clinical psychosis, then I don't know what is.

Trump’s kind of folks!

Just listen to his rhetoric.

4 more years of Trump, and we'll start seeing this at home.

I live in the city of Los Angeles near the city of West Hollywood.

When Russia let some Russians emigrate to the United States in the 1970s, many settled in West Hollywood, an area known for being relatively lenient toward gays. (The Los Angeles Police Department, on the other hand, was proud of how many gay men it entrapped every year.)

Some of those younger Russian immigrants brought their anti-gay attitudes, so some of them became verbal or even physical gay bashers. In time, the situation improved. It is now 2019, and those Russian immigrants are now much older. Their numbers are starting to shrink in West Hollywood.

Being allowed to beat up migrants and homosexuals, a right wing dream. No wonder why they love Russia so much

It's more than just simply noticing, it is complete fact. Because they are complete assholes. The American Taliban

Every society and every state has an LGBT community. But not all treat their LGBT community equally the same.

Sadly, many individuals are inculcated by the state or by politicians to hate people that are not of the majority.

I would argue that in the 1970s and 80s, they stepped into an environment that was already awash in anti-gay attitudes and that they often found their own prejudices welcome.

Oh, yes.

When I used to read about gay bashing police reports, some of the suspects had names that belonged to other immigrant groups besides the Russians. And, of course, we have long had our own home-grown bashers.

It is no secret that some of those bashers are terrified that they, too, may be gay.

I've definitely seen that issue in play. Expanded general acceptance of LGBTQ people has made it easier for straight men to accept them, too, but it seems to me that most completely heterosexual men always had less of a problem with gay people than men who are not completely straight.

Anyone who would do that to someone else's son or daughter.....

Needs to have it done to them. I know that's wrong, but all I can see is MY son and daughter beat up, and it makes me angry.

LGBT has a choice in Russia.
Either to respect its religion and values, or to leave the country.
Why do you not condemn Muslim countries where rules against LGBT are more though?

Russians prefer their religion
