Russia Misinforms International Tribunal As For Return Of 3 Ukrainian Naval Vessels
Ukraine Navy vessels impounded by Russia in occupied Crimea.
On 15 May 2019, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea ordered the Russian Federation to immediately release 24 Ukraine Navy sailors and return three captured vessels to Ukraine.
As is typical, Moscow ignores international court rulings. The 24 sailors were returned September 7 in a "35 for 35" prisoner swap with Ukraine.

Ukraine Navy Commander Ihor Voronchenko states that the Russian Federation has provided the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea with false information regarding the return of the three Ukrainian naval vessels captured in the Kerch Strait. Voronchenko noted that after the return of the 24 Ukrainian seamen to Ukraine on September 7, Russia told the court that it had returned both the seamen and the vessels. According to Voronchenko, Russia does not want to return the vessels as they would become evidence the court might use in any legal proceeding pertaining to Russia's piracy.
