U.S. Says It Has Plans to ‘Take Down’ Western Russian Region's Air Defenses

The threat of long-range missile launchers in the Russian enclave is driving the Air Force to develop new tactics for multi-domain attack and dispersed defense.

The United States military has a secret blueprint targeting the air defense system protecting Russia’s westernmost territory of Kaliningrad, according to the U.S. Air Force's top commander in Europe. NATO members perceive Russia’s missile deployments in Kaliningrad as a threat at a time when tensions between Russia and its Western neighbors are running high over Moscow’s 2014 annexation of Crimea from Ukraine. Kaliningrad is a Baltic enclave bordered by Poland and Lithuania, both members of the Western military alliance. “If we have to go in there to take down, for instance, the Kaliningrad IADS [Integrated Air Defense System], let there be no doubt we have a plan to go after that,” Air Force Gen. Jeffrey Harrigian was quoted as saying Tuesday by the U.S. Breaking Defense news website. Harrigian, who commands the U.S. Air Forces in Europe, said the plan “would be a multi-domain, very timely and effective capability that we would bring to ensure we have the access we need in that environment.” “The Kaliningrad region is reliably protected from any aggressive plans being developed in Europe by vagrant American generals,” the Russian Defense Ministry said Friday.

Russia has deployed S-400 mobile surface-to-air missiles and nuclear-capable Iskander missiles, among other weapons, in Kaliningrad amid rising tension between the U.S. and Russia. The tensions played out this spring when both countries performed multiple probes of each other’s air defense systems. A non-nuclear-capable U.S. Air Force B-52 bomber flew a “mock cruise-missile attack” on Kaliningrad in March, the U.S. publication National Interest reported, citing analyst Steffan Watkins. The bomber turned around 60 nautical miles from Russian airspace, Watkins tweeted in March. Russia has previously accused NATO of unjustified military buildup near its borders.

Doing due diligence. In any hot war with Russia in Europe, the Kaliningrad enclave will have to be neutralized asap.

The Russians have significantly militarized Kaliningrad. Cruise missiles from the enclave can strike 5 Western capitals.

war with Russia would be extraordinarily stupid. the upside to Russia owning the president is that an initial offensive attack on Russia is unlikely. there are no other upsides.

an effective strategy to deal with Russia would be to announce a twenty year moonshot to replace all fossil fuels and to begin public / private action to do so. this would also solve many of our Saudi Arabia problems.

Russia just wants to stay alive and keep the gang together. The big threat is the tottering regime in China, and I don’t see Russia getting too cozy with them either. Russia is just one more nuclear hillbilly with technology to steal.

i have a different view concerning global politics. i'm more concerned with our domestic political situation at the moment, however.

How would one power all these Prius clones? When everyone plugs in and the fuse pops, what then?

. . . everyone dies.

Some of us think that would be a bad thing.

The Kremlin would disagree. You should brush up on their war doctrine.

the goal would be to expand the nuclear and renewable grid exponentially using the public and private sectors.

It's good to have plans to respond to various possible future scenarios.

We definitely need to get on the nuke train for power.

Many Democrats are still furious that they didn't get Hilary Clinton's promised war with Russia. That the USA has not been totally obliterated and the human race dying in WW3 forces them to continue to endure their unbearable lives of being perpetually terrified of everything and everyone, while overall hating themselves, the USA and all Americans.

i conditionally agree. Thorium technology looks pretty good, IMO. while i am definitely a proponent of mediating environmental consequences, i see nuclear as one of the most viable and shovel ready technologies to replace fossil fuels.

Nitroexpress:

Solar photovoltaic power panels on every roof and nitrogen based engines for vehicles would work. But it would cut out the role of centrally controlled power utilities, so is not acceptable to corporatists and statists who want to maintain the population's dependence on centralised power distribution networks.

The question not clearly answered by the article is whether or not the plan involves preemptive strikes in which case NATO initiates war with Russia by attacking sovereign Russian territory and air space first. I am sure the Russians have more kit tucked away in deep, hardened bunkers and that only nukes will be able to destroy such secured back-up systems. So what this seems to amount to is a US assertion that it will first-strike Russia if it thinks that is warranted and may use nuclear weapons to boot as first-strike weapons. No doubt the Russians have some horrendous counter measures to respond to a first-strike on Kaliningrad. If I was in charge of Russian strategic defences of Kaliningrad and lived in Moscow I would order the deployment of many deeply buried 50-100 megaton nuclear mines on the Kalingrad frontier. If NATO invades the Russians can make the North German plain, Northern Poland and the Western Baltics a poisonous, radioactive nuclear wasteland as an act of last resort, should Kalingrad be attacked. Then waves of intermediate and long range missiles would come from the east towards European cities to make the point very clear to NATO that they had just killed humanity with their preemptive strike policy.

Time to rethink Operation Unthinkable me thinks.

Cheers.

One of the most underappreciated aspects of alternative energy is strategic; we need to spend more time harping on all the costs associated with maintaining our oil supply lines, and the benefits of no longer relying on Saudi Arabia and the other OPEC nations to keep the lights on & the gears turning.

Well....we actually don't rely on SA for oil because we are a net exporter of oil. SA can still effect the total price of global oil prices though. I think SA's biggest hold on us is tangentially related to oil, and I'm not sure what we can do about it, and that is the petro-dollar. All the billions of oil traded in U.S. dollars helps keep hyper-inflation from happening.

I should have been clearer. It's the constant efforts to keep the oil prices under control that keeps us there. And more investment into alternative energies would help break our dependency on oil, which would be a net benefit in the long run, both for job creation and for reducing the burden of our military's size & fuel consumption.

The point of this exercise is purposefully leaking a narrative for its deterrent value.

Every so often you have to remind the Kremlin and Mr. "invincible weapons" Putin.

That helps with part of the problem but how do you propose to solve the issues of SA moving to a different currency for oil trade?

If America moved to nuclear power and threw just a little tax incentive for car companies to invest into the kind of tech Elon Musk's been pioneering with Tesla, There won't be enough demand in fifteen years for the OPEC nations to create artificial scarcity. China and Russia might have some big issues, though. As for how we're going to get America onto nuclear, that's easy - just erase the name on the Green New Deal, file the serial numbers off & turn it into an actual bill. When the next recession rolls around, and the Democrats get elected in to clean up after the Republicans like they did in '08, call it a stimulus package. Job done.
