Christian preacher yells faggots during sermon

Judaism does not fit in with the 3 points that Logicman described.

The religion and people of the Torah do. Did they not have prophets? Did they not have holy books? Do you think Muslims and the LDS are cults and Judaism is somehow different?

There are many people who call themselves Christian without understanding what the term really entails.

It is supposed to be about love, acceptance, and understanding; not judgement, bigotry, and self-righteousness.

It is in one's deeds, not one's words, that shows how truly Christian they are.

Interesting comments. Let's explore a bit.

1. Do you believe in the Bible as the Word of God?
2. Is it wrong for a Christian to believe that abortion is wrong?
3. Is it wrong for a Christian to oppose the homosexual lifestyle?
4. Is it wrong for a Christian to oppose same-sex marriages?

Knowing we have a lot of Christians on the site, I wanted to ask, what are your thoughts on this?

I was listening to a podcast series related to cults and how to identify if you or others are in a cult. It was a series of different discussions.

One section was by a Christian preacher from a sermon he did. I was listening to it, and I thought he was doing a really good job. He was using examples and case studies on many cults, and he was using the bible to cite teachings on false prophets. I was really enjoying it. Then at one point, he said something about "fags." I was a little surprised, and then he said, "Yeah, that's right. I said it. They are faggots."

He also made some strong statements against the mormon faith, Catholicism, and Pentecostalism.

I looked into his background, and he is Paster Steven Anderson of the Faithful World Baptist Church.

Maybe he was hoping if he said it 3 times a gay person would appear? It's amazing how many anti-gay extremists are actually frustrated closet homosexuals themselves.

So sad. Come out, come out, Mr. preacher man :)

It’s very difficult to understand why anyone using that language would be put front and center in a podcast about cults from a religious perspective. To me personally, the words fags or faggots is COMPLETELY unacceptable. Unless he produced the podcast, I can’t even imagine why he was chosen. Bastard? That one I don’t have a problem with. Not sure why I don’t, actually. Maybe because, compared to faggots, it’s so tame.

Personally, I think he’s in the wrong profession.

How about this guy, embraced by both Roy Moore and Ted Cruz. Says gay people should be executed, says girl scout leaders should be executed for supporting gays. What a sweetheart, eh?

I guess what I am saying is Islam, Christianity, and Judaism all believe in sacred books and prophets. Do I think the Isrealites in the Bible who looked at Moses as a prophet and who recieved new scripture in the Torah were members of a cult? No, I think Moses really was a prophet of God. I believe the Torah really is the word of God. But under logicman's definition it seems they could be categorized as a cult. Do I think the Christians in the New Testament are members of a cult because they looked at Christ as the Savior of mankind and Peter, James, and John and the Quorum of 12 apostles as prophets of God who recieved new scripture, the New Testament. I don't. I believe Christ really is the Savior, the apostles really were true prophets of God, and the New Testament the word of God. Do I believe the Latter Day Saints are members of a cult because they believe Joseph Smith is a true prophet who recieved new scripture in the Book of Mormon, and that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is guided by a living Prophet/First Presidency and a Quorum of 12 Apostles. I don't because I believe Joseph really is a true prophet, the Book of Mormon is the word of God, and the leadership of the LDS Church are real prophets that have the Melchizadek priesthood and guided by revelation.

My main point is if a member of another Christian or Jewish sect wants to categorize the LDS religion as a cult because they believe in new scripture and a living prophet, that it undercuts their own religion as the scriptures they believe are the words of God derive from a people who had living prophets and who recieved new scripture.

I do understand many cults do use scripture(vast majority likely the Bible), claim to be prophets, and abuse people under their power.

Not very polite.

No, the religion and the people do NOT fit with the three points. And I never claimed that Muslims and the LDS are cults.

I do not believe that The Word Of God is static. He continues to speak to us and teach us through ourselves and others throughout time. Adding to the bible is not a problem, and prophets are not a problem either. However, there are prophets who do not speak The Word of God or who Use his words not for education or faith, but for their own purposes. These are false prophets as are those who abuse their followers and congregation in any way.

Unbelievable what pastors get away with. His “church” must be some nondenominational religious group that doesn’t give a damn. It would be interesting to know if he is actually ordained or get his credentials off the internet. I just don’t understand our world anymore. Just don’t. That hate speech like that would be INVITED to any respectable conference is unbelievable. And that Huckabee and Cruz would appear with him, further proves Washington DC has lost its moral compass...if it ever even HAD one.

I never heard of the guy.

It's hard to make a comment without actually listening to the said podcast.
Just so to make sure that nothing is taken out of context, or misunderstood.

But, there are indeed some dangerous cults out there......

No, it's about obedience to the words of Jesus, what it is NOT about is conforming to the zeitgeist of society at large, Jesus said that himself. And I suppose it would be useless to point out that you made several judgments in the post I quoted.

And it's not that I agree with what the man in the OP said, but I agree with you even less.

I feel bad for Christians like you, you missed the point entirely.

He is setting a bad example and is veering from the word of God.

Anderson is preacher without accountability. He has no over sight and as such is what we consider to be "uncovered" (out of any line of spiritual authority). He's well know for his bigotry and blatantly un-Biblical teachings. While he has some good points, they are polluted by the dead wrong ones to the point that I wouldn't waste 2 minutes listening to his messages.

He certainly won't win many over to Christ with such language...Jesus went among people like this...I can't imagine him using the language this man used...

"dogs", "white-washed sepulchers"...??? These were incredibly rude and insulting terms, but he used them with intent and a VERY specific target in mind (the Pharisees and Teachers of the Law). Don't get trapped into the mindset that Jesus was a "goody-two-shoes", because when it came to the Pharisees and Teachers of the Law, He was incredibly blunt, confrontational and not very polite.

That minister is probably getting a lot of negative feedback. I doubt he's paying attention to any of it though, and it won't change his mind. I haven't been in the church I attended lately. A member of the congregation kept forwarding me right wing articles, etc. I would post the debunk links and forward them to her e-mail list. She finally took me off her list. Good choice.

One of the most kind and intelligent fellows I've known was a Lutheran pastor. I could talk to him about anything. I could discuss science and how it relates to the bible, creation theories, anything.

Totally agree. We are on similar wavelengths. I was just quickly browsing thread and read where the OP preacher calling the LDS a cult and then logicman stating new scripture and prophet are signs of a cult and it sounded like a backhand diss on the LDS and possibly Islam as they have an additional holy book and prophet. In a sense he is correct as a lot of obvious cults do have those qualities except its not just a new scripture as plenty use the Bible. I don't even care if he or anyone thinks the LDS are a cult. its all subjective. Any belief system can be seen as a cult. A wild eyed preacher with snake in one arm and his congregation feeling the "spirit" rolling on the ground barking like dogs and speaking in "tongues" may yell Mormons are a cult. Okie dokie. Pass the green jello.

I see your point...Jesus's words were harsh to those who should have known better...who knew God's Word and still abused it...I cannot imagine Jesus using such a slur when talking to unbelievers though...that is the difference...he understood that they were tossed about, like a sheep without a shepherd...he felt compassion and pity for them...not contempt...

Thoughts? You said Baptist. That pretty much explains it.

But seriously. You know why other Christians whisper in heaven right? God doesn’t want the baptists to find out other people are there.

But seriously seriously. If you are in a church that is preaching hate of any particular group...they didn’t get the message. They don’t understand Jesus or the point.

I'm not the very religious type. I do considered myself Christian.
(here it comes so fasten your seat belts)
I high school we call each other f a g g o t s without given it a second thought.
I still use it in some occasions.
Is it a big deal ?
" Sticks and stones will break my bones by names will never hurt me. "
Maybe if folks think on it and being Christian they would turn the other cheek and ignore it.
Why get physical unless it's true ?
Anyone want to take a shot ?

Unless you're gay, you don't get to decide if 'faggot' is offensive. Maybe if you've ever been on the street late at night and heard behind you, "Hey, faggot!" you might have a different view of whether it's a big deal or not.
If the old Italian guy across the lane tells you he doesn't like the term 'wop', do you just laugh and say it's no big deal and call him a wop?

Oh yawn yawn.
The term is used everyday. It's used in films like "Casino" , "Hooper". In rap videos...on football fields.
The word wop is used as well as they call each other that.
As for me ? perhaps.

There's three main characteristics of a cult:

1. Cults often have their own "Holy" Book apart from the Bible that they claim is God-inspired.
2. They have their own elevated deity or prophet who they claim is divinely inspired, or "like" Christ.
3. There is often inappropriate behavior of the leader towards the congregation (i.e. using inappropriate language - 'faggot' - or engaging in sexual contact, etc., with parishioners).

I would add:
1. They often separate themselves and their flock from the rest of society in subtle to not so subtle ways.
2. They preach such separation is necessary because others are .......whatever.
3. Many times there is an end of days theme.

If your denomination of .... has more than 3 or 4 of these things, run and don't look back.

Fine with me. You don't friggin' care about offending people, no law against it.
I bet you're real selective, though, about how you use those terms and who you use them to.

As for movie scripts and music videos, those are just for 'let's pretend'. Not good examples

Steven Anderson is notorious for his view on homosexuals.

He protests too much.

I wouldnt be suprised if there is homosexual pornography in his possession or young men that he meets in hotel rooms.

Is odd that he is so...vocal... about one particular sin.
