Martyrdom of Imam Hussain عليه السلام [W:15]

Today is the 10th of Muharram, a very sacred day in the Islamic calendar. 10th of Muharram actually corresponds to the 10th of Tishrei in the Jewish calendar. What is called Ashura (the tenth) in the Islamic calendar is actually Yom Kippur (day of Atonement) in the Jewish calendar. This is the day in which the Lord God delivered the children of Israel from Egypt out of slavery and brought them to Mt. Sinai. Muslims are encouraged to observe a fast on this holy day.

However, this is also the day in which the Prophet’s beloved grandson Hussain (peace be upon him) was martyred on the plains of Karbala in modern Iraq by the forces of the wretched and cursed Umayyad ruler Yazid. So it is a solemn occasion to commemorate the martyrdom of that great and saintly pious man who sacrificed his life for the cause of truth. He was murdered along with his family including infant children in the most cruel and ruthless way. This was the most grave event in Islamic history which shocked the conscience of the whole world that how could people who claim to be followers of the Prophet so casually have murdered his own grandson whom he loved very much.

The message of Karbala is to always rise up against evil and to be willing to sacrifice your own life for the truth. Yazid was a drunkard and immoral person who inherited power from his father, thus breaking with the early Islamic tradition of the rule going to the one most qualified by piety and nobility. When Mu’awiya died in 680 CE, his son Yazid, based in Damascus, immediately sent instructions to his governor in Medina to force Hussain and other prominent disciples of the Prophet to give him the oath of allegiance even if it had to be done through coercive means. Hussain was summoned to the citadel in Medina but he refused to give the oath of allegiance to Yazid. He said that if he were to pledge allegiance to anyone it would have to be in public and not behind closed doors. Hussain then went on a pilgrimage to Mecca. Meanwhile, the people of Kufa, who still remembered the just rule of his father Ali, the Prophet’s fourth successor, began writing him letters inviting him to come to Kufa. They claimed they were willing to accept him as their Imam and give him the pledge of allegiance. Imam Hussain then sent his cousin, Muslim son of Aqil, to scout the situation in Kufa and take the oath of allegiance on his behalf. Muslim went to Kufa and was initially pleased to see the zeal there for Imam Hussain to come and lead them. He therefore wrote to Imam Hussain asking him to quickly come to Kufa where his followers were eagerly expecting him. Thus Imam Hussain set out with a caravan of his 72 followers, including his close family members and sons. Meanwhile, the cunning Yazid replaced the governor of Kufa with the savage Ibn Ziyad, knowing full well that the latter would brutally crush any inkling of a revolt in that town against him. Ibn Ziyad arrived in Kufa and immediately began threatening the people and bribing others. Regrettably, many of the people who originally pledged themselves to Imam Hussain abandoned their pledge mostly out of fear of retribution from Yazid’s new governor. Muslim son of Aqil was soon left all alone as a stranger in the town and so Ibn Ziyad moved in with his forces to have him killed. Meanwhile, Imam Hussain had set off for Kufa but when he arrived at a place called Karbala nearby, he and his companions were viciously martyred by Ibn Ziyad’s forces.

Now we see that the mission of Imam Hussain was to restore a government or Imamate in the Muslim world based on truth and justice, led by men of piety and learning. But this uprising was crushed and ever since the Muslims have been under the curse of authoritarian and tyrannical government. This is why it is so important to atone for the collective sin which the Muslim Umma committed and get revenge on the killers of Imam Hussain and those who follow in the footsteps of such cruel and black hearted people. This is the concept behind the promise of an expected Mahdi whose purpose will be to get revenge for the atrocities that these evil dynasties have inflicted upon the Prophet’s pure family and blessed progeny.

I find it sad that the prophet Mohammed, peace be upon him, was addicted to Virginia Slims cigarettes.

Following is the translation Muslims and their liberal friends don't want you to pay any attention to.

This translation is simple plain English and to the point. Also has many compilations of particularly pertinent verses.
If there is any doubt about the accuracy of a particular verse, it can be cross-checked against other more convoluted translations.

Koran is a purveyor of a mental disease that causes people to become criminally insane.

Like all diseases one does not become full blown immediately.

KILLERS are acting in harmony with Koran and example of Mohammed
KILLERS are acting in contradiction to NT and example of Christ

Koran is plainly contradictory to the US constitution and Koran demands the believer to wage war on non-Muslims.

If current law were enforced, Muslims could not legally enter the USA

Re: Martyrdom of Imam Hussain عليه السلام

I read a post by Eninn, that said jihad is a worthy cause, how does one practice Jihad?

Do we Americans have an improper understanding of what Jihad is?

Re: Martyrdom of Imam Hussain عليه السلام

Jesus said: Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. (Matthew 10:34)

He that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one. (Luke 22:36)

But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me. (Luke 19:27)

all quotes from the English translation of New Testament, the King James Version

Re: Martyrdom of Imam Hussain عليه السلام

Jesus said many things, chief among them was preaching peace, if you are a Muslim, why preach Jesus to Christians?

What seek thou to justify?

Re: Martyrdom of Imam Hussain عليه السلام

I am curious if we westerners are confused to the nature of Jihad? Can you define it?

It has been my experience that Muslims on forums just post but wont help forum members to help understand Islam, perhaps you are different, Cherub786?

If he preached peace why did he say “I am not come to send peace” ?

Peace is boring to be honest with you. I like the more radical and violent Jesus, you know the one who overturned the tables of the money changers in the Temple and starting whipping people with a cord.

And don't forget the Jesus of the second coming that will come with an iron scepter to break the nations like the smashing of pottery. That's the awesome Jesus. We believe the Messiah comes to inflict vengeance on his enemies, making rivers of blood, not some hippie carpenter wearing sandals

Before the calm, the storm rages. Jesus spoke in literal ways and parables.

Who do you believe is the Messiah?

Jesus comes in peace, yet wages war against the unbeliever.

He shows great compassion and great wrath.

How do these truths parallel Jihad?

Re: Martyrdom of Imam Hussain عليه السلام

What is Jihad, from a Muslim definition?

It means struggle, could be an armed struggle in self-defense, an inner spiritual struggle, or a struggle to preach the word of God.

In the Hebrew Bible there is also the concept of holy war known as Milhemet Mitzvah which you should look up and study.

The inner struggle is the hardest and ultimately leads to Heaven, I trust Christ and all else matters not.

I am not religious and not overly concerned with study.

I don't indentify as Christian, to be "like Christ" is a tall order.
GOD is my Creator and Jesus is my Savior and Friend.

What more can I say? To each his own. Respect.
