Since Elvira is here and I believe she might be our only resident Jehovah's Witness, I thought maybe we could ask her some questions about her faith. I've heard things throughout my life about JWs, but I don't really know if they're true so I thought Elvira would be a good person to ask. Please post any questions you have that you'd like her to answer (and remember the rules of this forum while doing it). :)

I have always heard that JWs won't come to a house that has an American flag visible. Is that true?

Re: Ask a Jehovah's Witness - Elvira

Not to put Elvira on the spot or anything! lol... :)

Re: Ask a Jehovah's Witness - Elvira

Oh, she's gonna get bombarded.

But......I AM curious....perhaps a Google question of the day?

I have heard the one of the tenants is that there are only going to be something like 120,000 people that make it into heavin...is that true, and why that number?

I believe it's 144,000, but the bigger question is why do they try and recruit more members with limited slots available?

Re: Ask a Jehovah's Witness - Elvira

I am not trying to step on Elvira's toes here and apologize if I am out of bounds. I was raised in a JW household and participated in the religion for about 15 years. Once I became an adult I left but I could probably answer some of the questions people may have if Elvira does not notice this thread or is busy, ect.

Heaven is a Pyramid scheme? :2razz:

Re: Ask a Jehovah's Witness - Elvira

I've known Elvira for many years and applaud her convictions/strength when it comes to her beliefs as a JW. First and foremost I believe she is a Christian. Personally I think it wrong for her and her fellow JW's to be treated differently than any other Christian group. There are many Christian denominations - I don't agree with the doctrine's and leadership of many....but they all preach from the same book - and they all claim to be Christian. I think all the different Christian denominations shows just how fractured we as humans are when we can't even agree on what is written in the same book being read by them all.

Is it required that when you marry, you give all your possessions to the church? Or is that just a choice some make?

Uhh no. the Watchtower Society is a bona fide cult. It is in no way just another denomination for this key reason: They deny that Christ Himself is God Almighty-Second person of the Trinity. A good expose on the Watchtower Society is a book written by two former witnesses who left. Len and Margorie Cretien-Witnesses of Jehovah which exposes the history and fallacies of the Watchtower cult.

I believe the bible states that 12 000 members from each of the 12 tribes of Israel will
Jesus was from Judah, Paul was from Benjamin, and John the Baptist was a Levite, but, since the diaspora in A.D. 70, identifying the tribe of a modern Jew is a little more difficult. That doesn't mean that the tribal divisions are irrelevant. During the tribulation, when most of the world has abandoned God and is following the Antichrist, 144,000 Jews will be sealed by God. This number comprises 12,000 from each tribe. So, even if we don’t know who is in what tribe, God has kept track. The tribes are listed again in Revelation 7:5-8, but they are not the same tribes that were given land in Joshua. Manasseh is there, and Ephraim (under Joseph’s name). But instead of Dan, Levi is included. No explanation is given as to why.

I have no idea on what sealed is supposed to mean. Going through catholic school when I was young it was explained as going to heaven. Of course what that meant to the hundreds of millions of catholics who are not part of the 144000 was never cleared up in regards to this particular passage

The Bible speaks of a small flock of 144,000 who will go to heaven (Luke 12:32; Revelation 5:12; Revelation 14:1) and a great crowd who will live on the earth (Psalm 37:9-11,29; Matthew 5:5; Revelation 7:9-17)...

Iirc, that's those who sit to the right of Jesus in heaven. Others sit to the left or in the general audience, so to speak. I'm not a Witness, never been a Christian, but I enjoy studying the Bible as literature with them.

I am going to make an assumption here

But I expect that both of you were raised and or are christians. Question being did the pastor/priest never go through revelations?

It was discussed very heavily in Catholic schools that I went to

Do some do that? How does that work? How do they live?

It is not a matter of recruiting but in hopes of helping others to understand the Bible and also perhaps in the process, saving their lives...we truly believe it is the greatest love we can show, to both our God and our neighbor...it is an obligation laid upon us by God...

Paul said..."Now if I am declaring the good news, it is no reason for me to boast, for necessity is laid upon me. Really, woe to me if I do not declare the good news! If I do this willingly, I have a reward; but even if I do it against my will, I still have a stewardship entrusted to me. What, then, is my reward? That when I declare the good news, I may offer the good news without cost, to avoid abusing my authority in the good news." 1 Corinthians 9:15,16

"Pay constant attention to yourself and to your teaching. Persevere in these things, for by doing this you will save both yourself and those who listen to you." 1 Timothy 4:16

Josie, I know of no one who had done such a thing nor is it expected...I do know some who have died have left money or possessions to the Watchtower Society in their wills, to further the preaching work...

Re: Ask a Jehovah's Witness - Elvira

I have a particular gripe with jw's. Not a big one this is more an irritant than a rant. It is in concern to the fact that america jw's send their children off to foreign lands like mine to annoy people by knocking on doors and once opened, give a supercilious smile and ask politely if i know of god.

My question is, whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?

Presbyterian. We focused more on the positive stories of the bible.

That is what the bible states is expected by all Christians.

Revelation is a positive aspect...it speaks of better times to come, times that will last forever...I love Revelation 21:1-4...

"And I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the former heaven and the former earth had passed away, and the sea is no more. I also saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God and prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. With that I heard a loud voice from the throne say: “Look! The tent of God is with mankind, and he will reside with them, and they will be his people. And God himself will be with them. And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.
