I just read this sticky and I'm puzzled.

This is a debating forum, to debate one must hold an opposing position to one's adversary yet the sticky (moderators) are stating very clearly that posting anything "critical" of "religion" or "atheism" may result in a ban?

So posting anything "critical" of "religion" might get me banned? So what if I post something that is critical of (say) Catholicism or of Islam, am I asking for trouble ! ?

Maybe I am missing something, but it's ironic that although this site seems to advocate the first ammendment to the death people aren't allowed to criticize religion?

Of course, private organizations are free to do what they please.

Is it possibly; before such a rule people would just flame those threads with anti-religious baits/insults/etc. and so they're trying to keep the conversation strictly about religious topics, and not the merits/demerits of religion itself?

Well you may well be correct, but if this is so, then it begs the question "what's missing from the existing forum rules" if it is deemed necessary to add extra rules for specific subjects...

Good point.

I am shaking in my seat for fear of a moderator suspending us for being skeptical of our rulers!

That is only in the "Religious Discussions" sub-forum. You can be as critical as you want about religion in other sub-forums here. The philosophy sub-forum is a good place for it, IMO.

On another thread it is being discussed if islamic youth need a safe place to discuss their beliefs without fear of persecution. This particular forum is such a place for christians. I would think muslims would also be allowed to use the same forum but have never seen one do so. I imagine that would be an amusing debate between ideologies that would, for once, have to respect the others opinion.

It basically is a case of theists whether muslim or christian do need a safe place where they reinforce their superstitions and hate for others without fear of having their delusions pointed out to them.

Where as there is no forum specifically for atheists as it is nothing more than a lack of belief and needs no such boosting to keep it together. Atheism can be practiced only when a theist appears and makes some claim in the name of a god.

Does this answer your questions, newbies?

QED

I like the rule. This is a subforum where you can actually discuss religious concepts without the obligatory atheist screaming "YOUR SKY GOD ISN'T REAL!!!"

Philosophy and Religion & Politics is the place for religious criticism.

that is exactly why the rule exists is so that people can have theological discussions without the other nonsense getting in the way.

I've learned you're better off just staying out of this forum.

The religious need their safe spaces from the scary atheists.

Were you here before the rule? If not, then you should be aware that it made discussion on this forum impossible since threads blasting religion would constantly crowd out threads about religious discussion. My issue with the solution is that it just moved the problem from one place of the forum to another. For a long time there all that ended up happening is that the religious bashing crowded out the philosophy forum instead of crowding out the religious forum.

Kinda like the gun forum then.

Atheists aren't scary. Some atheists do seem to be awfully offended by the religious choices of others, though.

Not offended enough to need their own safe space though, clearly.

Just as some religious people seemed obsessed with atheists, or some Christians are obsessed with Muslims and Jews.

I don't visit the Religious Discussion forum all that much, so I can't really say who needs a safe space here. If you believe some do, that's fine with me. I merely noted that perhaps it's the intolerance of some atheists and others that prompted the sticky in the first place.

No doubt. There is plenty done by "Christians" that is not very Christ-like.

If only there was a forum section to mirror this where you could discuss things from a skeptical foundation without being openly proselytised at by religious people. Perhaps we could request one.
