So i was thinking about this 82 virgins as a reward for martyrs in Islam, and is tarted doing some digging.

The premise that got me started on this is that it is a popular belief, and a lot of the times, regardless of culture or coutnry, popular beliefs are wrong.

So i started doing some research and have found a couple of things about this.

First, it is possible that it may be a translation, as explained in this site here:

and then there is this website here which explains it much better:

http://www.aviperry.org/political-blogs/where-did-the-notion-of-72-virgins-in-islamic-paradise-come-from

So, here it is:

Warning, possibly NSFW

Despite the disclaimer by some Muslims, the truth is very clear. The 72 Virgins notion has its origins in the Qur'an. Although the holy book does not specify the number as 72, it does say that those who fight in the way of Allah and are killed will be given a great reward. It goes on to stipulate that Muslims will be awarded with women in Islamic heaven. It even describes their physical attributes—large eyes (Q 56:22) and big, firm, round "swelling breasts" that are not inclined to sagging (Q 78:33). The Qur'an refers to these virgins as houri, companions of equal age, but the highly-flavored emphasis of their bodily characteristics, including their virginity, gave rise to many hadiths and other Islamic writings.

Hadith 2687 is where the number 72 is mentioned. "The smallest reward for the people of Heaven is an abode where there are eighty thousand servants and 72 houri, over which stands a dome decorated with pearls, aquamarine and ruby, as wide as the distance from al-Jabiyyah to San'a."

Qur'anic commentator Al-Suyuti (died 1505) and Orthodox Muslim theologians such as al Ghazali (died 1111 CE) and Al-Ash'ari (died 935 CE) graphically elaborated sensual pleasures attributed to Muslims in paradise". Al-Suyuti wrote, "Each time we sleep with a Houri we find her virgin. Besides, the penis of the Elected never softens. The erection is eternal; the sensation that you feel each time you make love is utterly delicious and out of this world and were you to experience it in this world you would faint. Each chosen one [i.e. Muslim] will marry seventy houris, besides the women he married on earth, and all will have appetizing vaginas."

So, in short, it is not really 72 virgins. This is a misconception.

LOL - an eternal erection.

ROFL

I didn't see that coming.

If you want the actual origin, it comes from a poorly cited hadith not the Quran (supplementary texts of Islam) most Muslims do not treat it as scripture.

That is a damn good video to watch in its entirety. A little oversimplified at times but seems to be genuinely accurate.

If you would like more, they did one on Islam and politics:

Yeah, that was pretty good (in it's entirety).

Thank you!

Dammit, i mistyped 72 Virgins.

Sorry.

I never quite understood the desire to have 72 virgins. While I would not want the same number of hardened street hookers with more mileage on them than a 88 Toyota - I would like some that at least knew their way around the block and had some useful skills.

Well, it ancient times virgins were valued because that meant there would be no risk of nasty things like STDs, and te like.

Because there was nothing like penicillin, at least to the best of my knowledge, so those things were pretty nasty.

I've never understood the sexual fascination with virginity. I have NEVER heard a guy say, "Man, I wish my wife (or girlfriend) was still a virgin." :lamo

It's all good but it gets better with experience.

I don't understand some peoples obsession with it either, or how some people look down upon virgins.

If we believe in an adult's right to choose, should we not be more tolerant and just go "meh" that someone wants to be a virgin until they're married, and should we not look down upon people who are both sluts and man sluts, and just let God be the judge if there is one?

In short, it's just a lot of judging going around, and isn't it wrong to be so judgmental?

I guess some people really like to put the mental into judgmental.

and that makes sense.

I have a feeling these martyrs are going to get there and find a virgin shortage. With supply and demand, its probably like trying to find .22 ammo at Walmart.

i think this sums it up nicely.

i am not really sure what the obsession is either.
i look at this this way.

you get 72 virgins. after 1 time they are no longer a virgin. so what do you do with them after that? i mean you technically get 72 times
and that is it. that is a long eternity.

i am not sure i get it either. however i seriously doubt i would blow myself up over that.
it simply isn't worth it.

Actually, the scribe made an error - it should have been "one 72 year old virgin".
