In the bible people are told to turn the other cheek, and in another place it says do good to them that hate you. At what point or what are the circumstances where a person should resort to violence? If that person wanted to utilize the scriptures.

The bible says: Blessed be the Lord, who trains my hands for war, and my fingers for battle. It also says, let the one who owns no sword sell his cloak and buy one.

Also this: He will lives by the sword, dies by the sword.

And this: For everything there is a season under heaven.

The beauty of the bible is that it contains so many contradictions that it forces us to think for ourselves. So, as you can plainly see, "individualism" was God's plan from the very beginning.

Interestingly the turn the other cheek postulate defines a game that does not work well for the adherents to the rule, where others follow an other plan.

One's life should not be consumed by hatred.

You can kill an enemy and still not hate them.

I imagine that the US Civil War was a lot like that.

Jesus hated the Pharisees and condemned them at every turn.

wait.... you dont mean ... oh no. thats not the interpretation that I wish to discuss

but did he act with violence or vengeance toward them?

Jesus' violence was limited to overturning the moneychangers' tables in the temple twice and then whipping them to drive them out.

It seems that he was trying to give the Sanhedrin a good excuse to kill Him.

Most people have not studied Jesus closely enough to understand Him very well.

if a person studies jesus closely. what conclusion would that person reach concerning acting with violence towards ones enemies.

That you really need to study Jesus yourself very closely in Greek from the Greek New Testament and NOT believe everything you are told and brainwashed to believe in your Sunday school classes.

the greek new testament is not very different from english versions. can you state specifically what is written in the greek that differs from an english version.

my sunday school class taught that when j "girded up his loins" it revealed an extremely long dagger.

You really need to read it in Greek to see how completely different it is.

Turn the other cheek was about being smacked in the face.

In that day and time this was not a serious attack... it was an insult, or the kind of punishment a superior dished out to a subordinate. It was an insult and a challenge.

A real attack would have been more like a spear through the guts.

I've never seen any scripture that says "stand still while someone rams a spear through your guts. Do nothing while they rape your family and steal what you need to live."

There are many indicators that violence is permissible under various circumstances, such as self-defense or just war.

where are these "indicators" ? I am thinking along the lines of self defense. not a war

Great summary Goshin.

Few people are familiar enough with history to know that the assault weapons in ancient times were the spear and the shield.

Swords and daggers were for self defense.

In specifically that 'turn the other cheek' was specifically addressing some of the regulations that the Roman soldiers had. They were allowed to strike the civilian population with the back of the hand, but with the fist was forbidden for normal curcimstances. Same thing with the 'walk the extra mile'. It was allowed that a roman solider could recruit a local to carry their stuff for a mile, but no more. It was about getting the soldier in trouble by carrying his stuff two miles instead of one.

at another place the bible says " blessed are you when people persecute you" also " when they persecute you in one place flee to another". I am not asking about governments going to war but about when an individual should or should not resort to violence.

you evidently didn't read the article please go read the article and then get back to me.
it is pretty clear on what it says.

I did read the article. and the article expresses exactly what i am asking. But does a person allow someone to attack their spouse or children and not act?
