Nun Habits: How Women Of The Cloth Express Their Own Personal Style (VIDEO)

I was researching details for a story (proper terms for certain articles of religious clothing) and came across this video. I thought this was rather interesting.

I found their open frankness and awareness of their selves and how society sees them to be engaging to listen to. But also the experiences they've had - like their family's reactions to them joining a Convent and incidences in public - people evidently believe they're to wear their habits all the time such as when going for a hike on the beach.

My Bishop encourages us to wear clerical garb in public, which he often does - I have seen him in cassock out among the people on more than one occasion. I, on the other hand, usually only wear clericals going to and from church or to the hospital or nursing home.

I had a co-worker attend my Priestly ordination, and she was curious about the many versions of clerical garb she saw, since we had a monk there, two Bishops, and several priests, all wearing one version or another of the clerical collar. One priest was wearing a collar that buttons to the shirt, I was wearing a Roman style tab collar, and there is such a thing as an Anglican tab collar. Evidently she thought the various collars were some indication of rank, I explained that my choice was purely economic, the shirt I was wearing was on sale, and it's not out of bounds for an Anglican priest to wear a Roman tab collar.

The comments I get from people range from political commentary (or rants) to the "can God make a rock He can't lift" questions.

One time, not being willing to wear long pants and a collar to the nursing home, I wore cargo shorts and a polo shirt to the nursing home, and to this day I wonder if any of the people I saw knew who I was "out of uniform".

True story: I attended a Catholic High School and my homeroom teacher junior year was a nun in habit. Two years later, I had entered the seminary and my "ministry assignment" was teaching religion to 3rd Graders in Chicopee, MA. The same nun was now the principal of this school, only no habit anymore.
While I wouldn't find it surprising to find her at the grocery store wearing civilian clothes, I was quite surprised to see her without a habit in her job.

I don't know, but I always thought nuns looked so beautiful. I grew up Catholic, but way out in the country where we didn't really see any nuns in the habit face to face, but the pictures always made me think their faces were framed in such a beautiful way. Simple, but very beautiful. Must be crazy, but I always thought they were real pretty.
