Sorry I was watching Last Week with John Oliver and he mentioned something
that today just makes my blood boil.

That is the preaching of prosperity Gospel.

Sow a seed and God will reward you. Sow a seed and you will be healed.
Give 1000 and God will return 10k.

this load of bull is so damaging to Christian beliefs it isn't funny.

Does God bless people? yes
Does He bless people for doing good things and bad? yes

Does he bless you for not using your head and giving money to these thieves? no he doesn't.

People God has given you scripture to weed out these types of false teachers. I suggest you do so.

No problem. Give your money to some other thieves. ;)

unfortunately that is the government and unlike the church if I don't give it to them they will come and take it.

the problem that I have is that these people preach that you should give but their giving is not quite as equal as yours.
most of them have come under IRS scrutiny for their dubious behavior and I agree they should.

for instance Joyce Meyer gave 800k dollars to charity. that seems like a lot of money. her church brought in 80m dollars.
even if she is tithing she is only tithing 1% of the churches income to charity. God calls for at least 10%.
and technically you should give according to your blessings.

Unfortunately for Christians, their religion has become less about God and more about Goods. We see this daily, but mostly on Sundays. Between TV beggars for Jesus, Tithing, mega churches and millionaire preachers, your religion is so corrupted as to be a business.
The general perception for many Non-Christians resembles a dirty used car lot. As we really do not much care about your faith or actions unless it bleeds into our own lives...it is up to you folks to try to get back on the path you so love to tell everyone else to follow.

This kind of gets right to the pith of religion doesn't it? Tell everybody to follow your path and all other paths are wrong..they don't so much worship God as make themselves into their own gods. There are Christians that follow Christ instead of usurp him, but you have to lookto find them. They tend not to justify political positions with cherry picked bits of scripture.

paint brush arguments are not great arguments.

the problem is that they are the minority of churches the bigger issue is that they have the most volume and are seen everywhere.
majority of churches do not believe this and in fact preach against it.

Thus did I use the term "Generally", you do bring up (inadvertently) another issue that adds significantly to the alienation Christianity brings upon itself...Persecution Complex.

It is also a "General" perception for many Non-Christians that every time we so much as speak about the religion honestly, we are seen as attacking it and those who follow it. In this way it resembles the racial issues we have in our society.

I personally try to avoid both as a rule. Certain races for my own safety, Christianity for my sanity.

The problem is you don't speak of religion honestly you speak through a distorted view of what you perceive it to be while ignoring the actual facts.
you point to outlier cases that have no meaning.

For me this is an issue inside of the church because what they are preaching is not true.
that to me is a bigger issue and what needs to be brought to light.

the problem is that they have a huge audience and have the means to spread this garbage everywhere.
what they preach goes against the bible and what Christ preaches.

they have a love of money and distort biblical passages to get them to that goal.

It has always been like this. The richest people in "old times" was always the Church or their allies. The Church has always been about goods, power and exploitation, and very little about "God".

Going back to when the present bible was made by Constantine, it was made on the basis of him keeping power and gaining wealth. Ever since the whole Church structure is about this. I mean for a supposed "poor church", the Catholic Church has some damn fine buildings and lands... those are not cheap. You think that Saint Peters Basiclica in Rome was cheap to build? That money had to come from somewhere.

If I understand this correctly, you first state I am being dishonest and uninformed in my commentary and then go on to explain that what I stated was not only an honest evaluation but, one you completely agree with. Why would you do so if not a knee jerk defense of your religion based on the persecution complex I was later referring to?

nope not at all. no persecution complex.

I just called you out on your paint brush argument.

and you would be 100% wrong.

catholic church is not the epitome of everything and not everyone believes what the catholic church says or preaches.
yet this is the constant fallacy I speak of.

Exactly how, is agreeing with someone "Calling them Out?"

Sounds like a solid racket.

Prosperity Gospel and Poverty Gospel are two peas in a heretical pod. God doesn't care how much stuff you have, He cares what you do with it.

Nothing we do can ever obligate God to do anything for us. People who tell you that something(s) you can can somehow require a given response from God do not know Him, but will be required by Him to give an account not only for their own actions, but for the actions of those who believe them. James 3:1 warns that teachers will be judged more strictly.

I agree which is why it erks me that these people rip people off to support their lifestyle basically.
nothing in the bible agrees with what they say.

however the bible does warn about what they say and people should take heed and take warning.

"It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter heaven."

yea these guys have a love of money not God and they prey on peoples love of the Lord to keep them in the money.
These are the worst kind of parasites and they will get theirs one day.

They will cry Lord Lord we have done good works and miracles in your name.
and He will turn to them and say get thee hence your workers of iniquity for I never knew you.

And yet you make fun of the religious for supposedly believing things with no evidence.

'twas ever thus

In all fairness the Catholic Church does not in anyway preach a prosperity gospel. In fact, Catholic Charities is by far one of the largest charities on earth and if you took all the charitable and relief organizations associated with the Catholic Church worldwide, it is larger than any other religious charitable organization (Christian or not). Catholic Charities USA alone serves more than 10 million people every year. About 17% of Americans are Catholic, yet they are responsible for about a third of all spending in social service charities in the United States.

actually in a way they use to. the selling of indulgences was in fact a prosperity gospel ideal.

however this has nothing to do with what I was responding to in your post.
