As a Buddhist I find this particular comment from Robertson to be interesting.

Robertson's comment underscores just how weak and fragile his fundamentalist immune-system is.

Any religion or any non-religion can and does have, ahem, unhinged individuals making nonsensical statements on behalf of their religion or non-religion. When a crazy person gets a microphone and a camera it is often newsworthy for entertainment value if nothing else.

It wouldn't be difficult to convince me that most of the questions Robertson responds to on the air are in face manufactured. Robertson may not even know some assistant producer is purposely writing questions "from Robertson's viewing audience" to elicit an off the wall response from Robertson. It's a bit like throwing peanuts to a monkey. People tune in to see what Pat is going to say next.

Money. That's the real issue. Robertson has built quiet an empire selling his brand of religion. For reasons we probably don't know Robertson has become loonier over the years. Now he's just plain nuts. But if you are in it for the money it pays well. No one can argue with that.

It happens across all religions. Recently there has been sincere concern expressed regarding Thai Buddhism and what money may have done and may be doing to it. I seriously doubt most Buddhists have become tainted money grubbers as a result. Anyone who follows the dharma as it was taught is not going to be harmed directly, but you don't want the wrong message being spread.

God knows how many people, many of them no doubt good Christians, depend on Pat Robertson's television persona for a living. Many are employed because of Robertson's brand of religious crazy. No doubt most of them know in their hearts that it has all become more about money than salvation. Who would be willing to pull the plug? They are in a difficult position.

Money is not good or bad. Religions fund countless worthy causes. Too much money, however, is not a good thing for any religious leader or any religion. I think Robertson is long, long passed his Sell By date.

Actually, atheism doesn't make any statements other than what the individual in question thinks about one very specific question. You could possibly argue that atheists lie, but atheism, like theism, is incapable of spreading lies, or even being false, as it is completely dependent on the individual.
