No they weren't. Cob construction was not uncommon for the region, as were brick homes and tents.

Nevertheless, wood was not common.
Your point was that this was curious because, as a carpenter, he should have been loyal to his profession. Whether we add Cobb, brick and textiles to the mix or not, the fact remains there is nothing uncommon about it. Wood was not an option.
