While doing my nostalgia thread at Arts and Entertainment, I came across popular songs with lyrics that strongly suggest of faith, and yet were not recognized as such, mainstream-wise. They may not have been written to be taken as a declaration of faith......but the faith message is just so powerful! At least, from my own interpretation.

One of them is Meatloaf's "For Crying Out Loud." I see it as a man who's been brought to God by a woman he loves. The woman, herself, had found God, and become saved. The man talks in part to the woman, and in part to God.

What do you see?

I was lost till you were found
And I never knew how far down
I was falling before
I reached the bottom

When I was cold and you were fire
And I never knew how the pyre
Could be burning on the edge
Of the ice field

And now the chilly California wind
Is blowing down our bodies again
And we're sinking deeper and deeper
In the chilly California sand

Oh I know you belong
Inside my aching heart
And can't you see my faded Levis
Bursting apart?

And don't you hear me crying
Oh babe don't go?
And don't you hear me screaming
How was I to know?

I'm in the middle of nowhere
Near the end of the line
But there's a border to somewhere waiting
And there's a tankful of time

Oh give me just another moment
To see the light of the day
And take me to another land where
I don't have to stay

And I'm gonna need somebody
To make me feel like you do
And I will receive somebody
With open arms, open eyes
Open up the sky and let the planet
That I love shine through

For crying out loud you know I love you
For crying out loud you know I love you
For crying out loud you know I love you

I was damned and you were saved
And I never knew how enslaved
I was kneeling there in the chains
Of my master

I could laugh ah but you could cry
And I never knew just how high
I was flying ah with you
Right above me

And now the chilly California wind
Is blowing down our bodies again
And we're sinking deeper and deeper
In the chilly California sand

Oh I know you belong
Inside my aching heart
And can't you see my faded Levis
Bursting apart?

And don't you hear me crying?
Oh babe don't go?
And don't you hear me screaming
How was I to know?

I'm in the middle of nowhere
Near the end of the line
But there's a border to somewhere waiting
And there's a tankful of time

Oh give me just another moment
To see the light of the day
And take me to another land where
I don't have to stay

And I'm gonna need somebody
To make me feel like you do
And I will receive somebody
With open arms, open eyes
Open up the sky and let the planet
That I love shine through

For crying out loud you know I love you
For crying out loud you know I love you
Oh for crying out loud you know I love you
For crying out loud you know I love you

Taking in the rain when I'm feeling so dry
For giving me the answers when I'm asking you why?
And my oh my
For that I thank you

For taking in the sun when I'm feelin' so cold
For giving me a child when my body is old
And don't you know
For that I need you

For coming to my room when you know I'm alone
For finding me a highway for driving me home
And you gotta know
For that I serve you

For pulling me away when I'm starting to fall
For revvin' me up when I'm starting to stall
And all in all
For that I want you

For taking and for giving
And for playing the game
For praying for my future in the days that remain
Oh Lord for that I hold you

Ah but most of all for crying out loud
For that I love you
Ah but most of all for crying out loud
For that I love you
Ah but most of all for crying out loud
For that I love you

When you're crying out loud
You know I love you

Another song is, "Sailing."

"Sailing"

I am sailing, I am sailing,
home again 'cross the sea.
I am sailing, stormy waters,
to be near you, to be free.

I am flying, I am flying,
like a bird 'cross the sky.
I am flying, passing high clouds,
to be with you, to be free.

Can you hear me, can you hear me
thro' the dark night, far away,
I am dying, forever trying,
to be with you, who can say.

Can you hear me, can you hear me,
thro' the dark night far away.
I am dying, forever trying,
to be with you, who can say.

We are sailing, we are sailing,
home again 'cross the sea.
We are sailing stormy waters,
to be near you, to be free.

Oh Lord, to be near you, to be free.
Oh Lord, to be near you, to be free,
Oh Lord.

U2's "I still haven't found what I am looking for" was written to be a song of faith as were a few different Life House songs:

I don't think For Crying Out Loud was meant as a song of faith - at least that's what I gather, from the short clip from the lyricist. It's even said to be about sexuality.

For Crying Out Loud's line,

For coming to my room when you know I'm alone....I automatically thought of CS Lewis' conversion.

"You must picture me alone in that room in Magdalen, night after night, feeling, whenever my mind lifted even for a second from my work, the steady, unrelenting approach of Him whom I so earnestly desired not to meet. That which I greatly feared had at last come upon me.

In the Trinity Term of 1929 I gave in, and admitted that God was God, and knelt and prayed: perhaps, that night, the most dejected and reluctant convert in all England."

To know that songs like For Crying Out Loud - with such blatant lyrics that refers to faith - was interpreted for sexuality (refer to interview with lyricist) - could it be that those with faith tend to see, or sense God, even in "unusual" places?

Even with songs like Cable's example (with hidden meaning).

Some pop songs seems to have God messages injected in them.

Katy Perry's Firework: "'Cause baby you're a firework. Come on, show 'em what you're worth. Make 'em go oh oh oh as you shoot across the sky. ...You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine. Just own the night like the 4th of July."
Perhaps that would be the language used if Jesus were around today, he likely would not talk about covering one's light under a bushel basket.

or

Taylor Swift's "Eyes Open" for Hunger Games: "The night goes dark. Keep your eyes open. Everybody's waiting for you to break down. Everybody's watching to see the fallout. Even when you're sleeping, keep your eyes open." It sounds like Matthew 25:13.

"by virtue of Creation, and still more the Incarnation, nothing here is profane for those who know how to see."

- Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

Those two both come from religious backgrounds, so it's not really surprising.

Another pop song like Meatloaf's is this:

It uses religious imagery as an analogue for sex.

"Take Me To Church"

My lover's got humour
She's the giggle at a funeral
Knows everybody's disapproval
I should've worshipped her sooner

If the heavens ever did speak
She's the last true mouthpiece
Every Sunday's getting more bleak
A fresh poison each week

'We were born sick, ' you heard them say it

My Church offers no absolutes
She tells me, 'Worship in the bedroom.'
The only heaven I'll be sent to
Is when I'm alone with you—

I was born sick,
But I love it
Command me to be well
Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen.

[Chorus 2x:]
Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life

If I'm a pagan of the good times
My lover's the sunlight
To keep the Goddess on my side
She demands a sacrifice

Drain the whole sea
Get something shiny
Something meaty for the main course
That's a fine looking high horse
What you got in the stable?
We've a lot of starving faithful

That looks tasty
That looks plenty
This is hungry work

[Chorus 2x:]
Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins so you can sharpen your knife
Offer me my deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life

No Masters or Kings
When the Ritual begins
There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin

In the madness and soil of that sad earthly scene
Only then I am Human
Only then I am Clean
Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen.

[Chorus 2x:]
Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life

Taken from my religious perspective, the difference between the two is the contrasting message. For Crying Out Loud, tells of the man who found salvation, whereas Take Me To Church, tells of the man disillusioned with God/religion.

Jon Anderson: State of Independence

State of life, may I live? May I love?
Coming out the sky, I name me a name

Coming out-silver word-what it is
It is the very nature of the sound the game
Siamese, Indionese. To Tibet treat the life
As a game, if you please

(Hey)

Coming up, Carabi, this sense of freedom
Derives from a mediative state

Movin' on, 'believe' that's it, call it magic
Third world, it is, I only guessed it

Shablam idi shablam ida
Shablam idi shablam ida
Shablam idi shablam ida

Shot to the soul-the flame of Oroladin
The essence of the word
The 'state of independence'

Sounds like a signal from you
Bring me to meet your sound
And I will bring you to my heart

Love like a signal you call
Touching my body, my soul
Bring to me, you to meet me here

Home be the temple of your heart
Home be the body of your love
Just like holy water to my lips

(hey, hey)
Yes I do know how I survive
(yes I do know) know why I'm alive
To love and be with you
Day by day by day by day

(hey, hey)
Say-aye yaya oh
(yayah yaya oh)
'be the sound of higher love' today

(yayah)
(hey, hey)
Time, time again, it is said
We will hear, we will see
See it all-in his wisdom-hear
His truth will abound the land
This truth will abound the land
This state of independence shall be
This state of independence shall be
Time, time again, it is said
We will hear, we will see
See it all-in his wisdom-hear
His truth will abound the land
This truth will abound the land

This state of independence shall be
This state of independence shall be
This state of independence shall be
This state of independence shall be
This state of independence shall be
This state of independence shall be

while I think some songs can be converted in a way I always suggest that people be careful.
take me to church is not a religious song at all.

anyone that would bother to tell me otherwise is wrong.
if you see the video and the lyrics you know why.

Mary Black wrote it and sings it. Christy Moore does a good job with it as well, but Jim Horgan, a barman from Co. Cork, Ireland, does a magnificent job. Beautiful.

Bright Blue Rose

I skimmed across black water
Without once submerging onto the banks of an urban morning
That hunger's the first light
Much much more than mountains ever do

And she like a ghost beside me, goes down with the ease of a dolphin
And emerges unlearned, unashamed, unharmed
For she is the perfect creature, natural in every feature
And I am the geek with the Alchemist's stone

For all of you who must discover
For all who seek to understand
For having left the path of others
You'll find a very special hand

And it is a holy thing and it is a precious time
And it is the only way
Forget-me-nots among the snow, it's always been and so it goes
To ponder his death and his life eternally

For all of you who must discover
For all who seek to understand
For having left the path of others
You'll find a very special hand

And it is a holy thing and it is a precious time
And it is the only way
Forget-me-nots among the snow, it's always been and so it goes
To ponder his death and his life eternally

One bright blue rose outlives all those
Two thousand years and still it goes
To ponder his death and his life eternally
