What are you giving up for lent?

Last night was your last opportunity to indulge yourself with booze, women, sweet tea and chocolate.

Today is Ash Wednesday and the beginning of the season to give up your pleasures and focus on the resurrection of Christ.

What are you giving up for lent?

I have given up abstinence and jogging.

Even when I was a practicing Catholic, I never really embraced the giving up something for lent part of it. Did you give something up?

I love fish so I always do like the no meat Fridays part of lent with all the great Fish Frys around town.

Since I'm not Catholic, much less a practitioner of western religion, I'm not giving up anything, but your thread reminds me of some old jokes I used to know, from years ago. Lots of friends in Cajun country.

Boudreaux, a Cajun highlander from Rapides Parish in central Louisiana, was an older, single gentleman, who was born and raised a Baptist, living in South Louisiana.

Each Friday night after work, he would fire up his outdoor grill and cook a venison steak. Now, all of Boudreaux's neighbors were Catholic... and since it was Lent, they were forbidden from eating meat on Fridays. The delicious aroma from the grilled venison steaks was causing such a problem for the Catholic faithful that they finally talked to their priest.

The priest came to visit Boudreaux, and suggested that Boudreaux convert to Catholicism. After several classes and much study, Boudreaux attended Mass... and as the priest sprinkled holy water over him, he said, "You were born a Baptist and raised a Baptist, but now you are Catholic."

Boudreaux's neighbors were greatly relieved, until Friday night arrived, and the wonderful aroma of grilled venison filled the neighborhood. The priest was called immediately by the neighbors and, as he rushed into Boudreaux's yard, clutching a rosary and prepared to scold him, he stopped in amazement and watched.

There stood Boudreaux, clutching a small bottle of water which he carefully sprinkled over the grilling meat, and chanted: "You wuz born a deer, and you wuz raised a deer, but now you a catfish."

I'm not Catholic but I was thinking of giving up sex and internet. I'm already off to a bad start. Did it start this morning at midnight? What time does it start? The Jews are so much better at defining their holidays. Jewish holidays start at sundown and end at sundown the following day. On the Gregorian calendar days start at midnight. If that's the case then I am a bad lent observer so far.

Yes, you start today, ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of lent. I don't know exactly what time, I guess it would have been at midnight.

I gave up Christianity for lent about 20 years ago.

I think that whether you are a Christian who observes Lent (or a Muslim who observes Ramadan) or just a someone who values the contemplative life, taking on a challenge in your life can lead to great personal growth.

Many years ago I heard a pastor observe that Lent is not just about giving something up, but also a taking on, and I agree with this.
