What a great message to Christians (all religions really)

:eek:t

An aside:

I find it sad to observe contentious confrontation toward the OP in a sub-forum that could be overflowing with reasonable discussion/argument of generally meritorious ideals.

just sad

I'm outa' here

Thom Paine

agreed the OP is wasted on some people and the contempt for it is, like i said. a perfect example of what the OP is referring too

:surrender Typical American. "I don't want to be a Christian anymore because it's so hard to do. Gandhi won't like me anymore. My friends won't like me anymore." If Christianity doesn't work then throw it away. Don't redefine it. This lady was making a proclamation that Christianity sucks and that she was abandoning the faith because "I can't." She couldn't do it anymore but she still wants to maintain the social benefits of the name Christian. I had a deep religious upbringing and I know Christianity is a direct conflict of 21st Century American culture.

There is nothing wrong with abandoning the faith but don't mischaracterize Christianity as hedonistic mindlessness. Christianity is a very elaborate philosophical and religious system. It requires effort and yes, sometimes people won't like you because your 'mean'. Get over it or give it up. Don't vandalize Christianity with this New Age mumbo jumbo lovey dovey horse manure.

Christianity has standards.

Yes, the current standard is that you have to be an a**hole to non-Christians. That's why people are abandoning the religion in droves. People like you have ruined an otherwise fine religion.

Being ugly to others has never been a Christian standard and never will be. And if it were true that people are abandoning Christianity in "droves," it wouldn't be because they're being told to be jerks to others and rejecting that instruction. Finally, Christianity hasn't been "ruined" by anybody: It remains what it always has been, and while there are always a few "bad apples" in every barrel, a majority of Christians are earnest and struggling just the way everybody else does with the added burden of being falsely attacked and criticized for following their faith.

1.) I have to agree 100%, being a christian my whole life thats never been the standard. Its the standard for SOME christians but they are simply doing it wrong and thats what the OP is about.
2.) I agree here to, i dont know if this is true but i havent seen any evidence of it. In real life I have only seen the"aholes" being called out more and more or being told they are doing it wrong or simply becoming more quite since the majority are not this way.
3.) I agree again, its not ruined by anybody honest, educated and objective anymore than the crazies of the right, left, conservatives, liberals etc etc ruin them. Normal people understand that a group shouldn't be judged by its minority.

on a side note unfortunately media and squeaky wheels play a part in setting up a Stereotype that should be ignored but isnt.

just an FYI thats not the current standard for millions of christians. The quoted statement does not represent the majority by any means.

As a chrisitian myself my religion is FOR ME, my relationship with my religion and with GOD is MINE.
Its not yours, its not to be forced on you nor are you to force me how to have it.
What you do with your religion or lack of one is YOUR business, not mine and vice-versa.
Im not to make the laws reflect only my beliefs nor are you to make laws to stop my relationship with my god. etc etc

To each thier own but i think this is a great message

So on other words, you don't actually believe Christianity is true, you just think it feels nice.

I would agree with this to a certain degree. The fact is Christ has called us to righteousness. It has also called us to be in the world be separate.
that means that people in the world are not going to like it. Just as in Christ's day they didn't like his message either.

It doesn't mean you have to be a jerk about it but you are suppose to stand on principle.

Christ called us to love one another, but that didn't stop him from correcting people who were not behaving the way that they should and that included
the priests.

Then the majority needs to do a better job of denouncing the vocal minority.

And as a Christian I am deeply offended at having MY holiday hijacked by materialistic greed heads. Christmas has nothing to do with Black Friday's, Jingle Bells, Let it Snow or It's a Wonderful Life.

It is about the birth of the Son of God. For those who don't believe Jesus is the Son of God who was born of a virgin birth, led a perfect sin-free life, was crucified sinless, rose from the dead and will return to judge the Quick AND the Dead, then please screw off and find something else to feed your pagan rituals, heavy drinking and obsessive food consumption.

There's a reason the "holiday season" generates three times as many suicides as any the period, and it isn't God. It is what a corrupt and self involved generation have turned the Saviour's birth into.

If you don't walk with Jesus on a daily basis, get then out of OUR holiday.

There are entire Christian organizations devoted to being 'ugly' to people with different sexual orientations or gender identities. The Catholic Church officially preached that homosexuality was a deviant sin until just recently.

Certainly, telling someone that they're going to hell just for living their life (without hurting anyone) is being ugly. And that has been a Christian standard since forever.

Oh the irony. Christmas was never about the Birth of Jesus. It was originally a pagan holiday celebrating the Roman god, Saturn (god of harvest). It became a Christian holiday when Rome converted to Christianity. Early Christians refused to celebrate the holiday because it was loaded with pagan iconography and tradition.

The original Christmas WAS about giving presents and debauchery.

My irony meter just exploded off the wall. Shame on those people for making you hate them and for making you say ugly things about them.

Forgive me, I didn't understand this post.

I believe that homosexual practice is still considered a sin. It cannot really be anything other unless it were considered illness.

My understanding is that the new Pope is using less harsh language to describe homosexuals. I applaud Francis for trying to bring Christianity out of the bronze age. He's my kind of Christian.

"If you're not offending someone, somewhere, you're probably not saying anything important."

Why should homosexual sex be reconsidered? Has anything happened to warrant it?

The Pope has been pushing for more acceptance of homosexuals within the Catholic church. The official position of the church is that it is sinful behavior, but the Pope has personally said that he does not judge homosexuals.

No. A sinner judges himself. By persisting in sodomy he excommunicates himself and thus leaves the congregation id est excludes himself.

Even the oral sex sodomites? Regardless, I'm not sure how that applies to Francis, who welcomes gays and lesbians into the church.

I had not understood he welcomed unrepentant sinners to communion. It is the same with divorcees.
