I do this from time to time. :)

This is an old one, but it is special to me. This was one of my mother's favorites; I sang it to her at her bedside as she crossed from this life to the next, while my niece played the guitar and my sisters joined in the chorus.

1. For all the saints who from their labors rest,
Who Thee by faith before the world confess,
Thy name, O Jesus, be forever blest,
Alleluia! Alleluia!

2. Thou wast their Rock, their Fortress, and their Might;
Thou, Lord, their Captain in the well-fought fight;
Thou, in the darkness drear, their one true Light.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

3. Oh, may Thy soldiers, faithful, true and bold,
Fight as the saints who nobly fought of old
And win with them the victor's crown of gold.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

4. O blest communion, fellowship divine,
We feebly struggle, they in glory shine;
Yet all are one in Thee, for all are Thine.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

5. And when the fight is fierce, the warfare long,
Steals on the ear the distant triumph song,
And hearts are brave again, and arms are strong.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

6. But, lo, there breaks a yet more glorious day;
The saints triumphant rise in bright array;
The King of Glory passes on His way.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

7. From earth's wide bounds, from ocean's farthest coast,
Through gates of pearl streams in the countless host,
Singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,
Alleluia! Alleluia!

8. The golden evening brightens in the west;
Soon, soon, to faithful warriors cometh rest.
Sweet is the calm of Paradise the blest.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

I guess you might tell...I think it's hard to beat Ernie's voice

I can't argue with you there... that man had an awesome singing voice.

Some people don't really classify this one as a religious song, but to me it is, and it's one of the most beautiful songs ever, imo.

Also my favorite version of that one. :)

"Saint Patrick's Breastplate" is one of my favorites. I have so many!

I attended a family Baptism at an Episcopal church on the 2nd, which was All Souls Day. The Baptist side of the family was astonished because they didn't understand that singing every verse is de rigueur [per forum rules, "required by etiquette;" expected]. I'm always disappointed when they aren't, especially at funerals.

Here's another version of "Will the Circle Be Unbroken," and it's my favorite. My very first CD was the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's Will the Circle Be Unbroken, and it was just about eight years before I had a CD player. Johnny Cash, Roy Acuff, Ricky, Marty Stuart, Levon Helm, Emmylou, Jerry Douglas, Bela Fleck, Mark O'Connor....

The first time I ever sang this song was in the Navy Choir, and I have loved it ever since then.

But yeah, when leading music I sometimes joke that we will sing verses 1,3,5, and 7, or something like that. Some people get the joke, not everybody does.

this rendition:

It was a tradition in my church that when a visiting preach got up to speak that the congregation stood up and sang this song without music. This group doesn't sing the verse that I like most.

This is a verse of the song that I like best. It's a very powerful statement.

Brethren see poor sinners round you
Slumbring on the brink of woe
Death is coming
Hell is moving
Can you bear to let them go?

I love Vince Gill's tenor.

I wouldn't classify this as a hymn but it's a very romantic story. I'm sure my mother wouldn't approve of anybody singing this song in church because it plays on emotion and has no scriptural inspiration. I absolutely love this story that is told through song. If your an emotional person with an appreciation for the concept of heaven then you will probably come to tears. It's a feel good story.
