Favorite hymns or other religious songs/music...

Emmylou and Ricky, and I won't spoil the surprise, but listen for uncredited soprano who has also recorded with Ricky:

I do this from time to time. :)

This is an old one, but it is special to me. This was one of my mother's favorites; I sang it to her at her bedside as she crossed from this life to the next, while my niece played the guitar and my sisters joined in the chorus.

At 2:52 - 3:30. "At the stern of the ship is the captain. I can hear as he called out my name." Wow! How can you avoid getting excited about that?

When I was a child I usually attended very small churches that were pretty informal. My dad, my mom, my brother, my sister and I would sing this song as a family. It's a great song for a family to sing together.

A generation later, I have been blessed with an opportunity to sing this song with my daughters during a special church wide song service that we have every August. My wife has no interest in singing. She hates the spot light. This was a hard song for me to learn. It has six verses to it.

Here's another version of "Will the Circle Be Unbroken," and it's my favorite. My very first CD was the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's Will the Circle Be Unbroken, and it was just about eight years before I had a CD player. Johnny Cash, Roy Acuff, Ricky, Marty Stuart, Levon Helm, Emmylou, Jerry Douglas, Bela Fleck, Mark O'Connor....

I agree. the NGDB Will the Circle be Unbroken is a great version of the song. The album was a breakthrough in music.

Another one I love by Tennessee Ernie Ford...

"I may have doubts and fears,
my eyes may fill with tears,
but Jesus is a friend who watches day and night.

I go to Him in prayer,
He knows my every care,
and just a little talk with Jesus makes it right."

My mother sang this song in church the day before I left for boot camp. The second verse is so appropriate and fitting to the situation.

How sweet to hold a new born baby
And feel the pride and joy he brings
But greater still, the calm assurance
This child can face uncertain days
Because He lives.

This is not a strict hymnal, but...............

I love this song, but as a caution, a convention of Black Gospel is endings that seem to never end.

and another......

an aside: regardless of beliefs, I have always wondered how anyone can possibly listen to this type of music.....................
And NOT be caught up .. in it.

Versions: #1#2

Wake up, o my eyes, wake up from heedlessness
Wake up, o my very sleepy eyes, wake up
Azrael's (*) intent is the soul, believe me (Know that the Angel of Death seeks your soul…)
Wake up, o my eyes, wake up from heedlessness
Wake up, o my very sleepy eyes, wake up

All birds wake up before dawn
They start reciting God's names in their own tongues
Mountains, rocks and trees declare It's unity
Wake up, o my eyes, wake up from heedlessness
Wake up, o my very sleepy eyes, wake up

They open the doors of the heavens
They sprinkle the water of Mercy upon believers
They cut out garments of Paradise for those waking up at dawn (*)
Wake up, o my eyes, wake up from heedlessness
Wake up, o my very sleepy eyes, wake up

This world is transient, don't ever be deceived
Don't rely on the crown and throne in vanity
Don't feel confident by saying "the seven climates are mine"
Wake up, o my eyes, wake up from heedlessness
Wake up, o my very sleepy eyes, wake up

Forgive me, your mortal servant Murad
Excuse my offenses,abolish my misdeeds
Resurrect me under the Messenger's flag
Wake up, o my eyes, wake up from heedlessness
Wake up, o my very sleepy eyes, wake up

* Waking up at dawn refers to waking up for the morning prayer which ends before sunrise.

Taken from Translation of "Uyan ey gozlerim" by Zara (Turkey) from Turkish to English (Version #2)

Those are my feelings as well. I'm not at all into hymns and somber religious music, I never was. Black gospel rocks and even though I am no longer a Christian soulful black gospels send a powerful and positive message that is difficult not to feel.

One of my favorites:

Fernando Ortega's version of "Come Thou, Oh Love Divine." Such gorgeous lyrics:

Some people don't really classify this one as a religious song, but to me it is, and it's one of the most beautiful songs ever, imo.

I classify it as religious, but more importantly,I classify this particular song as my all time favorite song... period.

not sure why, but when I hear Ave Maria, I am instantly relaxed and reverent...it's very odd, even to me, but it elicits an almost spiritual reaction.

These guys have a great schtick (walking around the piano and changing places) but they can also play and sing:
