The West Memphis Three were jailed for a ritual Satanic homicide they didn’t commit. Later after many years they were released, their time wasted. Revisiting the West Memphis Three, one sees that if they were the killers, they would have done a more naïve ritual. They would have had an alter, symbols painted on the murdered boys. The brutal way in which the boys were thrown into the water and killed suggests rather a madman on a rampage than a satanic killing.
In retrospect, I feel this long trial that shadowed over my teenage years deserves revisiting. I myself was accused of the exact same crime until the boy was exposed as a runaway out of state. It in fact corresponds to a need for radicalization of youth in the American South against backward conservatism. As such, I wrote this humorous poem about them:
The Ballad of the West Memphis Three
I dont know anything at all,
I half believed in magic and read a book about Allister Crowley,
But I dont know anything at all.
They put me through a long long trial,
Isolated in Arkansas,
They put me in jail and said I was going to hell,
But I dont know anything at all.
Outside the world turns,
Workers build television parts in sweat shops in Mexico,
Europeans are abroad feeling superior,
But to all of this I am blind,
With clouds in my mind,
And I dont know anything at all.
In Uzbekistan child slaves pick cotton for Europeans,
Paramilitaries are trained at school of americas,
Guatemalan children live in a city dump,
They pick through trash that I cant smell,
For here I sit in jail,
And I dont know anything at all.
