This should be right up the ally of those who support blasphemy and hate speech laws.

Woman Arrested For Tweet Showing Red Stilettos On The Quran
A woman was arrested in Turkey this week after she posted a photo on Twitter of red-stilettoed feet standing on the Quran.
The unnamed woman in her mid-30s was taken into custody in Istanbul on Tuesday on suspicion of blasphemy and inciting religious hatred, Agence France Presse reported. She was released after questioning.
Police launched the investigation after the firebrand mayor of Ankara, Melih Gokcek, filed a legal complaint against her, according to Turkey's Dogan News Agency.
"No one has a right to insult our religion," Gokcek wrote on Twitter, and posted the original photo. Standing or laying shoes on an image is often used as a sign of disrespect in the Middle East, where feet are considered unclean.

While it is beyond stupid, it was done in Turkey, so there's no point in getting totally outraged about it, that is, unless a person lives in that country. Now, if it were here in the states, it'd be time to hit the streets.

Anyone who does something like this is trying to stir up problems.

Maybe, maybe not. Since it is a woman doing it, I take it as more of a stand against how that religion views women in general.

Yeah, that is royally ****ed up.

That she was arrested, not that she disrespected a book filled with vile and hateful things.

Weird toenails.
For some reason I can't put support for blasphemy laws and hate speech laws together in the same person. Or, if there is such a person, how this could get up his ally.

True. I don't think I would want them put in jail here for it though.

"No one has a right to insult our religion?" There, maybe. But I live in a free country, and I'll insult their religion or anyone else's any time I damn well please. And that mayor who wants to shut everyone else up can stuff it. Here's to the woman who did that with the shoes!

The country where this is happening is our supposed NATO ally. The U.S. should put an end to that relationship without delay--whatever good it once did, it's no good any more. Turkey is no longer a friend of the United States.

They are virtually the same thing.Hate speech laws that punish people for pissing off certain people.Blasphemy laws are laws that punish people for pissing off certain people.

While Turkey's conduct in this case is reprehensible and its standard of free speech lags far behind the rest of western civilization, the idea that we should cut off ties with the most westernized Arab nation in the world over this is absurd. Unless, of course, you think having allies in the most volatile region on the planet is a bad thing.

Would you be upset if she was stepping on the Bible?

What rights do Christian women have? Fill us in.

The real question is what rights Turkish women have versus the rights enjoyed by American women. Yes, in this country, one can pose in stilettos on a Bible or urinate on it. In Turkey, apparently, you can't be abusive to the Quran without being arrested.

No, not at all. And I suppose that it depends on where you're at in the world that determines what rights Christian women have.

While apartheid was beyond stupid, it was done in south Africa, so there was no point...

While Kristallnacht was beyond stupid, it was done in Germany, so there was no point...

While everything the Khmer Rouge government did was beyond stupid, it was done in Cambodia, so there was no point...

Yes, that idea would be idiotic. I never expressed it. Nor did I suggest cutting off all ties.

This incident is just another indication of why the U.S. should have gotten Turkey out of NATO already. Erdogan's party is Islamist and has taken Turkey backwards. I think Turkey's actions recently as to the jihadists in Syria have shown it no longer can be considered a trustworthy ally.

Well, let's kick Turkey out of NATO, cripple them with sanctions and bomb them back to the stone age then, eh?

But to be serious, I said "there's no point in getting totally outraged." I'm still mad about it, just not 'totally outraged'.

No. Strawman.

But to be serious the dividing line between "mad" and "totally outraged" is so unclear that it may reasonably be considered non-existent. So welcome to the ranks of the totally outraged!

It is not unclear to me.

All right then- explain the difference.

Okay.

Mad = Bruce Banner just prior to transformation
Totally Outraged =
