I thought some of you might enjoy this short sermon.

There might be hope yet! A Pastor with GUTS!

Thought you might enjoy this interesting
prayer given in Kansas at the opening session of their Senate. It seems

prayer still upsets some people... When Minister Joe Wright was asked to open

the new session of the Kansas Senate, everyone was expecting the usual
generalities, but this is what they heard:

Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask
your forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says, 'Woe to those who call evil good,' but that is exactly what we have done.

We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values.
We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery.
We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare.
We have killed our unborn and called it choice.
We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable.

We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self-esteem..

We have abused power and called it politics.

We have coveted our neighbor's possessions and called it ambition.
We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression.
We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment.

Search us, Oh, God, and know our hearts today;
cleanse us from every sin and set us free.
Amen!

The response was immediate. A number of legislators walked out during the prayer in
protest. In 6 short weeks, Central Christian Church, where Rev. Wright is pastor, logged more than 5,000 phone calls with only 47 of those calls responding negatively.. The church is now receiving international requests for copies of this prayer from India, Africa and Korea .

With the Lord's help, may this prayer sweep
over our nation and wholeheartedly become our
desire so that we again can be called 'one nation
under God.'

What makes this so "gutsy"?

More chain email?

Many factual errors. snopes.com: Billy Graham's Prayer for Our Nation

It is also a good example of why we should stop prayers at all government events. Dude was an asshole.

Yeah, it takes a lot of guts to stand up and remind the minority religions of this country that you have lots of power and they don't.

LOL. According to Snopes, the pastor delivered this speech to the Kansas legislature ... in 1996.

And maybe one person walked out...maybe. But who cares about details and facts...

This is quite obviously a copy-pasted chain email. I feel like it's 1997 all over again.

Exactly. Without a link, it sounds like a chain email started by a person on the religious hard right.

Sounds like things Jesus would say to a degree--afterall revelation teaches he will rule with an iron rod,and since he is the exact image of his God and Father--God rules with an iron rod as well.

Yeah, but Mars is really gonna be as big as the moon in the night sky!

Yeah, it takes a lot of guts to stand up and remind the minority religions of this country that you have lots of power and they don't.

I read about a minister once stood in front of his congregation and warned them they were partaking off the table of demons( 1Cor 10:21) by participating in the Christmas celebration--he was escorted to the door and told not to return. Why? Every encyclopedia on earth in agreement religious celebrations are filled with pagan practices( table of demons) including Christmas-Easter.
But as Gods word teaches--The world is passing away and so is its desires---too many fear men will not like it--same in Jesus day except the world hated truths like that--they filled their hearts with hatred and murdered Jesus, apostles and Christians. The world doesn't like it now either, but Jesus taught--to be no part of this world.

This illustrates perfectly what is completely wrong with religion today. This "prayer" is nothing but a political statement, not a sincere invocation of God...and exactly what Christ talked about when he spoke of the hypocrites who love to pray loudly on the street corners for all to look upon them to see.

I actually agree with this NP, I think we might disagree on how huge a part, but still....
Personally I think most people in this country want to help the legit poor its the free loaders we don't want to help and sadly that makes up a huge part of the poor.

Here's another version from TruthorFiction.com (disclaimer: I know nothing about this site):

The Truth:
This event actually happened in the Kansas House (not Senate) in Topeka on January 23, 1996. Joe Wright is the pastor of Central Christian Church in Wichita and was guest chaplain that day. He prayed a prayer of repentance that was written by Bob Russell, pastor of Southeast Christian Church in Louisville, Kentucky. According to an article in the Kansas City Star from January 24, 1996, his prayer did stir controversy and one member of the legislative body walked out. Others criticized the prayer. The controversy didn't end there. Later that year in the Colorado House, Republican representative Mark Paschall angered lawmakers by using Joe Wright's prayer as the invocation. Some members there also walked out in protest.

The preacher's prayer that stirred the Kansas legislature-Truth!
