Spotlight on Mormon beliefs. (LDS)

In the New Testament it was the scripture quoting religious leaders of the popular, mainstream sects that reviled, persecuted, attributed falsely all manner of evil against Jesus when He walked the earth. According to them He was a false prophet, He was misinterpreting scripture, He was teaching a corruption of the religion of their father Abraham. All He did was follow the will of God and went about doing good. Yet they constantly put all kind of misinformation about Him to turn the people from Him, constantly tried to lay legal traps for him, and have him arrested on trump charges. Why did Peter and the apostles know He was really the Messiah? God revealed it to them. The rock is revelation. Prayer and receiving personal revelation is the key. False teachers will tell you that you do not need to pray and seek revelation in regards to whether a prophet or particular church is true. Test your own minister out and mention The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

When they finally killed Jesus, many of the religious people in the population rejoiced thinking they did God a favor. The Bible teaches that Satan is the prince of this world. He controls the hearts and mind of many. He has an unquenching hatred for Christ, His authorized servants, and His authorized Church. He wants everyone to be as miserable as him. It is a threat to his kingdom. Those he controls the most, have his hate towards Christ, His authorized servants, and His authorized Church. That is why the NT church and her prophets were persecuted and killed, and why when it was restored by the prophet Joseph Smith, even in the one nation set up to protect religious freedom, it had to flee into the wilderness to escape total destruction.

It is pretty strange really how many acted towards Joseph Smith and the LDS. I mean I think Scientology is stupid, and many evangelical televangelists make me want to puke, but it would never cross my mind to try and kill any of them, to tar and feather them, to constantly try and trump of false legal charges against them, to constantly misrepresent them to create anger towards them, rape their wives and daughters and then kill them, and try and erase them from the face of the earth. I don't know, just would never cross my mind. I can't imagine a state government in the U.S. creating an extermination order on an innocent people and them having to flee from the then borders of the U.S. in the middle of winter. But it happened. Cannot be a scarier, more menace to society than those Mormons:

From the Poway California LDS stake.

But why the name "Mormon" for this religion? It is a letter away from being called "Moron" and I think it may be one reason why people may perceive the religious movement with some reserve perhaps?

But why the name "Mormon" for this religion? It is a letter away from being called "Moron" and I think it may be one reason why people may perceive the religious movement with some reserve perhaps?

The name is "Mormon" from the Book of Mormon, which is their (to all other Christians) non-canonical basis of their religion.

The "moron" reference is terribly childish. I have little use for any religion, but MOST Mormons I've encountered have been very nice, non-judgmental people.

Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. 12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

These verses epitomize Joseph smith and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. But what would you expect in this world of the Lord's true prophets and Church.

Jeremiah 14
14 And the Lord said to me: “The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I did not send them, nor did I command them or speak to them. They are prophesying to you a lying vision, worthless divination, and the deceit of their own minds.
15 Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the prophets who prophesy in my name although I did not send them, and who say, ‘Sword and famine shall not come upon this land’: By sword and famine those prophets shall be consumed.
16 And the people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem, victims of famine and sword, with none to bury them—them, their wives, their sons, and their daughters.

For I will pour out their evil upon them.

These verses above seem to have epitomized the results of the MISSOURI PROPHECIES.

The verses articulate what I previously referred to as the "boomerang" - the prophecies that were thrown against opponents not only didn't come true, but also the people whom he prophesied to, ended up to suffer instead.

John 14:6
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

That means, there wouldn't be anyone who will hold any power like Jesus. ONLY THROUGH JESUS!
No one else's consent is needed to gain entrance to the Kingdom of God!

God instructed us to have faith and trust in Him. Therefore, He is consistent and faithful.
That means there wouldn't be any revisions to His Word.

To believe that His Word can be revised by any prophets would mean The Scriptures is un-reliable.

If the Scripture is not reliable.....

.....then it means your own doctrine is not reliable, since it's claimed to have been founded on the Scriptures! That's simple logic.

False prophets are not to be taken lightly, as you see in some of the verses that warn about them.

Jeremiah 23:26
26 How long shall there be lies in the heart of the prophets who prophesy lies, and who prophesy the deceit of their own heart,

Jeremiah 5:30-31
An appalling and horrible thing has happened in the land: the prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule at their direction; my people love to have it so, but what will you do when the end comes?

Ezekiel 13:6
They have seen false visions and lying divinations. They say, ‘Declares the Lord,’ when the Lord has not sent them, and yet they expect him to fulfill their word.

2 Corinthians 11:13-15
For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.

Deuteronomy 18
20 But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in my name that I have not commanded him to speak, or[a] who speaks in the name of other gods, that same prophet shall die.’
21 And if you say in your heart, ‘How may we know the word that the Lord has not spoken?’—
22 when a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the word does not come to pass or come true, that is a word that the Lord has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously. You need not be afraid of him.

Romans 16:18
18 For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive.

Galatians 1:6-9
No Other Gospel
I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— 7 not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed.
9 As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed.

1 John 4:1-6
Test the Spirits
Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.

2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God,
3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already.
4 Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
5 They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and the world listens to them.
6 We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

2 Peter 2:1
False Prophets and Teachers
But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction.

Matthew 7:15
“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.

Matthew 24:24
For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.

Just as the Lord anciently led the Israelites from destruction from their enemies and took them on an exodus beginning on Passover, across the desert wilderness to their Promise Land, settled next to the second largest inland lake of salt in the world(the Lord's people are called the salt of the earth) and built a great temple, the LDS escaped destruction of the their enemies and were led by the Lord on an exodus, that also began during Passover, across the American wilderness to their Promise Land, settled next to the largest inland lake of salt in the world, and built a great temple. And what a choice land the Utah Valley is. It has four distinct, absolutely stunning seasons, and the beauty is such that it was like God went overboard on creating such a beautiful home for the latter day saints.

Mormon is claimed to be a prophet. I'm just learning about him as we speak. Let me share this:

Mormon /ˈmɔrmən/ is believed by followers of Mormonism to have been the narrator of much of the Book of Mormon, a sacred text of the Latter Day Saint movement, which describes him as a prophet-historian and a member of a tribe of indigenous Americans known as the Nephites.

As a narrator in the text, Mormon presents himself as a redactor. He quotes and paraphrases other writers, collects and includes whole texts by other authors, contributes running commentary, and also writes his own narrative. He writes about the process of making the book, both in terms of compiling the works of other prophets and also in terms of engraving the words on metal plates. He alludes to content that is left out of the book, and refers to a larger collection of records at his disposal.

The Book of Mormon states that Mormon was instructed by the prophet Ammaron where to find the records that had been passed down from their ancestors. It also claims that Mormon later abridged the near-millennium-long history of his ancestors, and added additional revelations into the Book of Mormon.

The official name is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Mormon is a slang name created by non-Mormons but it is not seen as offensive. Interestingly the Book of Mormon, according to the text, is derived from a reformed Egyptian script. The word Mor in Egyptian means "love" and Mon means "established forever".

It didn't end there! HE RESURRECTED AND ASCENDED!

That has been prophesied by Jesus before He died!

Matthew 23
34 Therefore, indeed, I send you prophets, wise men, and scribes: some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from city to city, 35 that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. 36 Assuredly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.

One way that Satan undermines Jesus is by diminishing His true stature in the eyes of people......and thus, falsely leading these people to the false Christ.

and why when it was restored by the prophet Joseph Smith, even in the one nation set up to protect religious freedom, it had to flee into the wilderness to escape total destruction.

Well....isn't that a contradiction? If a nation is supposedly set up by God to protect religious freedom.....why did Smith have to flee to escape total destruction?

That means, there is no such specific nation that was decreed by God to protect religious freedom! Wherever Smith got that idea is definitely not from God! As shown by the evident result!

It is pretty strange really how many acted towards Joseph Smith and the LDS. I mean I think Scientology is stupid, and many evangelical televangelists make me want to puke, but it would never cross my mind to try and kill any of them,

Brigham Young talked about loving neighbors and "having to spill their blood (if need be )" just so to save them.

to tar and feather them, to constantly try and trump of false legal charges against them, to constantly misrepresent them to create anger towards them, rape their wives and daughters and then kill them, and try and erase them from the face of the earth. I don't know what you refer to here.

But to expose the lies - even though it may hurt your feelings - is done out of love for you.

I do believe that like so many people who believe in a god.....you sincerely want to do the right thing.
You want to follow and please your Creator.

We can only keep pointing to the Scriptures to show you where you are being misled.
The rest is up to you.

May God bless you and keep you, and help you find the truth.

Due to a complaint, I need to remind everyone that the Religious Discussion Forum is for the civil and respectful discussion of theistic issues. Questioning the existence of God and general God-bashing are prohibited, as is generalized religion bashing, or uncivil bashing of any particular religion. Disagreement is fine, debate is fine... but be mindful that a high level of civility is required when discussing a subject so volatile as religion, and be respectful of other's deeply held beliefs. In other words, be nice... or else do it elsewhere...

I had a friend at the factory where I used to work, named “Muddsar”. He went by “Mud”. Fortunately, he had a good sense of humor with regard to “Your name is ‘mud’” jokes.

Mud apparently grew up in the U.S. (he didn't have any noticeable accent that I could discern, and spoke English as one who grew up here) but he is of Pakistani ancestry. In whatever languages are common in Pakistan, “mud” doesn't mean the same thing it means in English, and “Muddsar” was a common name, with “Mud” a perfectly normal shortened form of it.

“Mormon” isn't really part of any official name of this church; it's an informal nickname. Originally, a slur, used against us by our enemies, but it rather stuck. It's very similar to the term “Yankee” to refer to Americans. It comes from the Book of Mormon, which, in turn, is named after the prophet Mormon who lived around 400 A.D., and who compiled and edited the records kept over the past thousand years by his people into the collection of metal plates which his son, Moroni buried, to be brought forth many centuries later by Joseph Smith. Of course, Mormon's parents, in so naming him, would never have thought of the possibility that in another language that would be common in the time their record was brought forth, their son's name would be noted to be similar to a common insult.

Well I think "enemies" is a bit harsh of a word. But I can see many skeptics position on this are. Mostly about the origins:

Umm no because Christ is speaking in that verse and he isn't talking to just smith he is talking to christians as a whole.

Following this engagement, On October 27, 1838, Lilburn W. Boggs, governor of the state of Missouri, issued Missouri Executive Order 44:

"The Mormons must be treated as enemies, and must be exterminated or driven from the State if necessary for the public peace... their outrages are beyond all description."
Smith Surrenders[edit]
General Samuel D. Lucas, leading a militia of 2500 men[2] informed the Mormons at Far West that "...they would massacre every man, woman and child..." if Joseph Smith and several others were not given up. Joseph Smith, Sidney Rigdon, Parley P. Pratt, Lyman Wight, and George W. Robinson surrendered on November 1.[3]

A secret (and illegal) court martial was held following Smith's surrender. Joseph Smith and his companions were not even aware of the proceeding until after it was over. At about midnight on November 1, General Lucas issued the following order to General Alexander William Doniphan:

"Sir:-- You will take Joseph Smith and the other prisoners into the public square at Far West, and shoot them at 9 o-clock tomorrow morning."
General Doniphan refused to obey the order.

"It is cold-blooded murder. I will not obey your order. My brigade shall march for Liberty [township] tomorrow morning at 8 0'clock; and if you execute these men, I will hold you responsible before an earthly tribunal, so help me God."[4]
General John Bullock Clark had been appointed by Governor Boggs to enforce the extermination order. He arrived and took command of the combined force on November 4. On November 5, he had an additional 56 men arrested and gave a speech in the public square at Far West. He outlined the terms of the treaty that General Lucas had previously negotiated which stripped the Saints of all their arms and property, and required them to leave the state immediately.[5] Liberty Jail - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Joseph was held in the cold, dark Liberty jail in the dead of winter for about 5 months until he was transferred and those guarding him allowed him to escape. While he was suffering the Lord revealed to him:

1 The ends of the earth shall inquire after thy name, and fools shall have thee in derision, and hell shall rage against thee;

2 While the pure in heart, and the wise, and the noble, and the virtuous, shall seek counsel, and authority, and blessings constantly from under thy hand.

3 And thy people shall never be turned against thee by the testimony of traitors.

4 And although their influence shall cast thee into trouble, and into bars and walls, thou shalt be had in honor; and but for a small moment and thy voice shall be more terrible in the midst of thine enemies than the fierce lion, because of thy righteousness; and thy God shall stand by thee forever and ever.

5 If thou art called to pass through tribulation; if thou art in perils among false brethren; if thou art in perils among robbers; if thou art in perils by land or by sea;

6 If thou art accused with all manner of false accusations; if thine enemies fall upon thee; if they tear thee from the society of thy father and mother and brethren and sisters; and if with a drawn sword thine enemies tear thee from the bosom of thy wife, and of thine offspring, and thine elder son, although but six years of age, shall cling to thy garments, and shall say, My father, my father, why can’t you stay with us? O, my father, what are the men going to do with you? and if then he shall be thrust from thee by the sword, and thou be dragged to prison, and thine enemies prowl around thee like wolves for the blood of the lamb;

7 And if thou shouldst be cast into the pit, or into the hands of murderers, and the sentence of death passed upon thee; if thou be cast into the deep; if the billowing surge conspire against thee; if fierce winds become thine enemy; if the heavens gather blackness, and all the elements combine to hedge up the way; and above all, if the very jaws of hell shall gape open the mouth wide after thee, know thou, my son, that all these things shall give thee experience, and shall be for thy good.

8 The Son of Man hath descended below them all. Art thou greater than he?

9 Therefore, hold on thy way, and the priesthood shall remain with thee; for their bounds are set, they cannot pass. Thy days are known, and thy years shall not be numbered less; therefore, fear not what man can do, for God shall be with you forever and ever.

While Joseph was being held in the Richmond Jail, Parley P. Pratt witnessed the following:

"In one of those tedious nights [in Richmond Jail] we had lain as if in sleep till the hour of midnight had passed, and our ears and hearts had been pained, while we had listened for hours to the obscene jests, the horrid oaths, the dreadful blasphemies and filthy language of our guards, Colonel Price at their head, as they recounted to each other their deeds of rape, murder, robbery, etc., which they had committed among the "Mormons" while at Far West, [Missouri], and its vicinity. They even boasted of defiling by force, wives, daughters, and virgins, and of shooting or dashing out the brains of men, women, and children.

"I had listened till I became so disgusted, shocked, horrified, and so filled with the spirit of indignant justice that I could scarcely refrain from rising upon my feet and rebuking the guards; but had said nothing to Joseph, or anyone else, although I lay next to him and knew he was awake. On a sudden he arose to his feet, and spoke in a voice of thunder, or as the roaring lion, uttering as near as I can recollect, the following words:

'SILENCE, ye fiends of the infernal pit. In the name of Jesus Christ I rebuke you, and command you to be still. I will not live another minute and hear such language. Cease such talk, or you or I die THIS INSTANT.'

"He ceased to speak. He stood erect in terrible majesty. Chained, and without a weapon; calm, unruffled and dignified as an angel, he looked upon the quailing guards, whose weapons were lowered or dropped to the ground, whose knees smote together, and who shrinking into a corner, or crouching at his feet, begged his pardon and remained quiet till a change of guards.

"I have seen the ministers of justice, clothed in magisterial robes, and criminals arraigned before them, while life was suspended on a breath, in the courts of England; I have witnessed a Congress in solemn session to give laws to nations; I have tried to conceive of kings, of royal courts, of thrones and crowns and of emperors assembled to decide the fate of kingdoms, but dignity and majesty have I seen but once, as it stood in chains, at midnight, in a dungeon in an obscure village of Missouri."

worn by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who have received their temple endowment. This garment, worn day and night, serves three important purposes: it is a reminder of the sacred covenants made with the Lord in His holy house, a protective covering for the body, and a symbol of the modesty of dress and living that should characterize the lives of all the humble followers of Christ.

It is written that “the white garment symbolizes purity and helps assure modesty, respect for the attributes of God

Well, while doing a little research on Brigham Young for the Exodus thread, this popped up and it shows that he indeed boasted about himself. This comes from LDS.

When one of them publicly proclaimed that President Young was the “man like unto Moses” spoken of in scripture, Brother Young chastized him with the wry comment:

“I think I am the great man that none of the prophets ever thought of or spoke of.”
