Joseph was born on the evening of Dec. 23, 1805. That night was the winter solstice on the Hebrew Calendar. Perfect Symbolism for restoration of the gospel "when darkness would begin to recede and that the light would return to the earth."
Joseph and his brother Hyrum were martyred on June 27, 1844. This one exact date fulfills a prophecy with perfect precision in the Book of Daniel. In the opening scenes of the Book of Mormon Lehi's family escaped the coming destruction of Israel by King Nebuchadnezzar II of Babylon. Many Jews were taken back to Babylon as captives after the siege of Jerusalem in 589 B.C. This same King Nebuchadnezzar II would later have a dream that the Jewish captive Daniel would interpret for him. You can read the entire dream in Daniel Ch. 2. The following is the interpretation of Nebuchadnezzar II's dream:
44 And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.
45 Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.-Daniel 44-45
What is this future Kingdom that God would set up on the earth?
In a prophecy given to Joseph Smith D&C 65: 1-6
1 Hearken, and lo, a voice as of one sent down from on high, who is mighty and powerful, whose going forth is unto the ends of the earth, yea, whose voice is unto men—Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
2 The keys of the kingdom of God are committed unto man on the earth, and from thence shall the gospel roll forth unto the ends of the earth, as the stone which is cut out of the mountain without hands shall roll forth, until it has filled the whole earth.
3 Yea, a voice crying—Prepare ye the way of the Lord, prepare ye the supper of the Lamb, make ready for the Bridegroom.
4 Pray unto the Lord, call upon his holy name, make known his wonderful works among the people.
5 Call upon the Lord, that his kingdom may go forth upon the earth, that the inhabitants thereof may receive it, and be prepared for the days to come, in the which the Son of Man shall come down in heaven, clothed in the brightness of his glory, to meet the kingdom of God which is set up on the earth.
6 Wherefore, may the kingdom of God go forth, that the kingdom of heaven may come, that thou, O God, mayest be glorified in heaven so on earth, that thine enemies may be subdued; for thine is the honor, power and glory, forever and ever. Amen.
Joseph Smith:
“The ancient prophets declared that in the last days the God of heaven should set up a kingdom which should never be destroyed, nor left to other people; and the very time that was calculated on, this people were struggling to bring it out. …
“I calculate to be one of the instruments of setting up the kingdom of Daniel by the word of the Lord, and I intend to lay a foundation that will revolutionize the whole world. … It will not be by sword or gun that this kingdom will roll on: the power of truth is such that all nations will be under the necessity of obeying the Gospel.” (History of the Church, 6:364–65.)
