Joseph was born on the evening of Dec. 23, 1805. That night was the winter solstice on the Hebrew Calendar. Perfect Symbolism for restoration of the gospel "when darkness would begin to recede and that the light would return to the earth."

Joseph and his brother Hyrum were martyred on June 27, 1844. This one exact date fulfills a prophecy with perfect precision in the Book of Daniel. In the opening scenes of the Book of Mormon Lehi's family escaped the coming destruction of Israel by King Nebuchadnezzar II of Babylon. Many Jews were taken back to Babylon as captives after the siege of Jerusalem in 589 B.C. This same King Nebuchadnezzar II would later have a dream that the Jewish captive Daniel would interpret for him. You can read the entire dream in Daniel Ch. 2. The following is the interpretation of Nebuchadnezzar II's dream:

44 And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.
45 Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.-Daniel 44-45

What is this future Kingdom that God would set up on the earth?

In a prophecy given to Joseph Smith D&C 65: 1-6

1 Hearken, and lo, a voice as of one sent down from on high, who is mighty and powerful, whose going forth is unto the ends of the earth, yea, whose voice is unto men—Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
2 The keys of the kingdom of God are committed unto man on the earth, and from thence shall the gospel roll forth unto the ends of the earth, as the stone which is cut out of the mountain without hands shall roll forth, until it has filled the whole earth.
3 Yea, a voice crying—Prepare ye the way of the Lord, prepare ye the supper of the Lamb, make ready for the Bridegroom.
4 Pray unto the Lord, call upon his holy name, make known his wonderful works among the people.
5 Call upon the Lord, that his kingdom may go forth upon the earth, that the inhabitants thereof may receive it, and be prepared for the days to come, in the which the Son of Man shall come down in heaven, clothed in the brightness of his glory, to meet the kingdom of God which is set up on the earth.
6 Wherefore, may the kingdom of God go forth, that the kingdom of heaven may come, that thou, O God, mayest be glorified in heaven so on earth, that thine enemies may be subdued; for thine is the honor, power and glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Joseph Smith:
“The ancient prophets declared that in the last days the God of heaven should set up a kingdom which should never be destroyed, nor left to other people; and the very time that was calculated on, this people were struggling to bring it out. …
“I calculate to be one of the instruments of setting up the kingdom of Daniel by the word of the Lord, and I intend to lay a foundation that will revolutionize the whole world. … It will not be by sword or gun that this kingdom will roll on: the power of truth is such that all nations will be under the necessity of obeying the Gospel.” (History of the Church, 6:364–65.)

In 1844 the Seventh Day Adventists sold their belongings thinking the world was going to end that year. The leader of this church based this off a prophecy in the Book of Daniel. Isaac Newton had also noticed that the prophecy pointed to 1844 A.D.

13 ¶Then I heard one saint speaking, and another saint said unto that certain saint which spake, How long shall be the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, and the transgression of desolation, to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden under foot?
14 And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.
Daniel 8:12-13

Daniel then hears a prophecy about the Messiah: 24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.
25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks

The starting date for both the 2300 days for the sanctuary to be cleansed prophecy and the 70 weeks to what appears to be the Messiah's martydom is when the decree is sent out to rebuild Jerusalem.

In 457 b.c Ezra receives the decree from Artaxerxes to restore and build Jerusalem. In Biblical Hebrew what is translated as day can mean year so you have the Messiah's Atonement for sin being connected with 490 days(years) from 457 B.C. which is 33 AD, and the sanctuary being cleansed 2300 years from the date 457 B.C. which is 1844 A.D. The 33 A.D. date is a bullseye for the martyrdom of Jesus. The Seventh Day Adventists thought the "sanctuary being cleansed" meant the earth being cleansed by fire at the end time. But if the first date is the martyrdom of the Messiah, could the other date in the related prophecy also be a martyrdom date of a great prophet? Given Daniel previously had interpreted a dream of the king about God setting up His kingdom in the latter days, could this prophet be connected with this latter day kingdom of God?

Let's take another look at the 2300 day prophecy.

Transgression of desolation- relates to the desecration of the temple

Ending of the daily sacrifice-the ending of the daily sacrifice at the second temple in 72 A.D. as Rome is destroying Jerusalem.

Trodden under foot of men- the term is used in the NT in relation to the covenant people who have broken their covenants, in a state of apostasy, they are no longer a blessed or delight some people, and their enemies have power over them.

"Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his
savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good
for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men." (Mathew 5:13)

sanctuary-another name for the temple in the scriptures

The prophecy then is not talking about the earth being cleansed by fire like the Seventh Day Adventists thought, it is talking about how long is Israel going to be scattered and in a fallen state without the fullness of the gospel and the temple after the 72 A.D. destruction of Israel by the Romans. The date given in the prophecy is 1844 A.D.

How was the "sanctuary cleansed" in Israel?

"In the early morning the high priest, in his robes of office, offered the daily morning sacrifice and performed the ordinary morning rite of dressing the lambs, which was accompanied by an offering of incense . Next in order was the festival sacrifice of a bullock and seven lambs. Then began the peculiar ceremonies of atonement, for which the high priest put on special vestments of linen. With his hands placed on the head of a bullock (contributed from his own means), he made confession of his own sins and of those of his nearer household. The two goats contributed by the people were placed before him, being designated by lot, the one for a sin offering "for the Lord," and the other to be sent away into the wilderness "for Azazel". Once more the high priest made confession over his own bullock, for himself and his wider household—his brother priests. After killing the animal and receiving its blood into a vessel, he took a censer full of live coals from the altar of burnt offering and two handfuls of fine incense into the sacred recess behind the curtain, the Holy of Holies (they only entered this portion of the temple once a year on this date); there he placed the incense on the coals, the cloud of incense enveloping the so-called "mercy-seat", and offered a short prayer. He returned for the vessel containing the blood of the bullock and reentered, sprinkling some of it with his finger eight times between the staves of the Ark. He then left the sacred compartment to kill the people's goat (marked "for the Lord"); with its blood he reentered the Holy of Holies, there to perform the same number of sprinklings in the same place.
Process of Purification.
By these rites the most holy place was rendered free from all impurities attaching to it through the intentional or unintentional entrance of unclean persons into the sanctuary. By sprinkling the bullock's blood and similarly that of the goat eight times against the curtain, the entrance to the Holy of Holies was purified." - Jewish Encyclopedia 1909

So the sanctuary was cleansed with the blood of two sacrificial lambs on the Day of Atonement.

There is a Jewish fast day associated with the "abomination of desolation" and the ending of the "daily sacrifice" at the temple known as Shiva Asar B’Tammuz, which then follows three weeks of mourning for the destruction of the temple.

When Joseph went to Carthage to deliver himself up to the pretended requirements of the law, two or three days previous to his assassination, he said:
"I am going like a lamb to the slaughter; but I am calm as a summer's morning; I have a conscience void of offense toward God and towards all men. I shall die innocent, and it shall yet be said of me—he was murdered in cold blood."
On June 27th, 1844 Joseph and his brother Hyrum were killed by a mob with their faces painted black as they were being held in Carthage jail. This day on the Hebrew calendar is one of four Day of Atonement. The following week on the Hebrew Calendar began the three weeks of mourning for the destruction of the temple after the fast day Shiva Asar B’Tammuz. Joseph and Hyrum were each hit by four bullets, for a combined total of eight wounds. To cleanse the sanctuary(temple) in ancient Israel the blood of two sacrificial lambs was sprinkled eight times between the stave once a year, on the Day of Atonement.

The martyrdom date of Joseph and Hyrum (whose name in Hebrew means "My brother is exalted") fits the prophecy perfectly.

It should be noted that the keys of this latter day kingdom of God were conferred to the prophet Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery (and the 12 apostles) by the visitation of several Heavenly visitors who last held the keys on the earth. These keys were transferred down to the current prophet and apostles.

The keys of the Aaronic priesthood were restored to Joseph and Oliver by John the Baptist:

The keys of the Melchizadeck priesthood were restored to Joseph and Oliver by Peter, James, and John:

Other keys:

"The long-awaited return of Elijah occurred in the Kirtland Temple on Easter Sunday, 3 April 1836. First the Savior appeared, followed by Moses, then Elias, and finally Elijah.
Moses restored the “keys of the gathering of Israel,” one of the necessary preparations for the Second Coming. These include the keys to gather scattered Israel from the four quarters of the earth and to lead the Ten Tribes from the land of the north. (D&C 110:11.)
Elias “committed the dispensation of the gospel of Abraham, saying that in us and our seed all generations after us should be blessed.” (D&C 110:12.)
Elijah restored “the power to hold the key of the revelations, ordinances, oracles, powers and endowments of the fulness of the Melchizedek Priesthood and of the kingdom of God on the earth; and to receive, obtain, and perform all the ordinances belonging to the kingdom of God, even unto the turning of the hearts of the fathers unto the children, and the hearts of the children unto the fathers, even those who are in heaven.”

Several important dates of the Restoration fall on relevant holy days on the Hebrew Calendar. Here are just a few:

"The angel Moroni, who is depicted sounding the trump atop our temples the world over, delivered the sacred plates to the Prophet Joseph Smith on Saturday, 22 September 1827, the very day of the Hebrew Feast of Trumpets that year. In fact, it was a realignment of that feast with the mean autumn equinox, which falls on 22 Sep each year. The precise moment of the equinox usually falls on either 22 or 23 September, but 22 Sep can be considered as an average value. So when the angel Moroni told the Prophet Joseph to meet every year on the same date, each of those dates fell on that day of the mean autumn equinox, when days and nights are of equal length. But on the day on which the plates were delivered to the Prophet, that equinox realigned also with the Feast of Trumpets."

The exodus of Israel led by Moses began during Passover. The exodus of the Mormons led by Brigham Young began during Passover.

The return of Elijah at the Kirkland temple was on a very rare Easter Symbolism of Passover

3. The Book of Abraham ("translated" by Joseph Smith from a set of Egyptian Papyri from a random mummy's casket, before the world knew how to translate hieroglyphs) has been declared a bogus interpretation by Egyptologists around the world. No group or body of scholars even pretends that Joseph Smith's translations are partly accurate. As for the Book of Mormon, according to his assistant scribes, Joseph Smith "translated" the plates using a seer stone in the bottom of a hat without the plates ever being present. Also, each "character" was declared to be a separate word, even though Egyptian is now known to be a phonetic language. To further complicate Smith's reputation of divine transcriber, he once "translated" a portion of freshly unearthed copper plates from Kinderhook, Illinois, which were later declared to be a tailored hoax by local pranksters.

You can't talk about mormonism without bringing up all the goofy **** they believe

So a stupid religion can be intepreted to somewhat sort of out of a hat validate a stupid religion? Guess stupid religions have to stick together.

Also the Mormon church for most of its history was a bunch of racist assholes who literally believed that black people had inherited some curse from God and/or that their dark skin was a sign of carrying sin. It wasn't until 19 ****ing 78 that the leader of the church claimed to have had a revelation directly from God instructing him to reverse the policy.

If you want to defend the bogus Book of Abraham, please do so. But you can't.

Doubt....it creeps in, you can't stop it, your church leaders can't stop it.

It is all out there, afraid to read it?

You started a LDS thread, have the guts to defend it.

You started a pro LDS thread, did you think you were afforded carte blanche freedom from inquiry?

This isn't a stake meeting, there are people of other faiths, and of no faiths. We have every right to ask questions in a respectable way. Your reluctance to address them speaks volumes, as does your indignation.

Your not the boss, he can post his opinions freely as long as he does not break the forum rules.

He can't dismiss the evidence in the topic so he'll just post all the silly anti-Mormon slander. The angel Moroni to Joseph Smith: "He called me by name, and said unto me that he was a messenger sent from the presence of God to me, and that his name was Moroni; that God had a work for me to do; and that my name should be had for good and evil among all nations, kindreds, and tongues, or that it should be both good and evil spoken of among all people."

He is just following prophecy. The Lord called those who spoke evil of Joseph fools. He's trying to sabotage the thread because he feels threatened. If he'll post a thread I'll post links from LDS scholars on everything he brings up to show just how ignorant and dishonest his accusations are. If he keeps posting in this thread I'll ignore him and it will show his character.

First, although the golden plates were said to have been preserved for generations by Nephite prophets, Joseph Smith never used them in translating the Book of Mormon. If we accept the idea that he dug up a real, physical record, then we must account for the fact that he never used it in the translation process.

Second, much of the Book of Mormon reflects the intellectual and cultural environment of Joseph's own time and place. In it are strands of American folklore, the King James Bible and evangelical Protestantism. Some may argue that something like the Protestant Reformation occurred 2500 years ago in America, but it is more reasonable to accept that the evolving doctrines and practices of Protestantism down to Josephs 's time influenced the Book of Mormon. The message of the book is especially relevant to nineteenth-century America. The Book of Mormon is most definitely a work of fiction written by Joseph Smith.

Third, no one actually saw the golden plates. The eleven witnesses admitted that they gazed upon and handled the golden plates in the same way that they saw spectacular treasures in caves guarded by angels, in the spirit and not in the flesh. Click here for more in-depth information on the "witnesses to the Book of Mormon".

Fourth, modern science has proven beyond a reasonable doubt that the Book of Mormon is a work of fiction. Unlike the Bible, there is absolutely no archaeological evidence of any kind to back up the Book of Mormon. DNA evidence has also proven that Native Americans are not descended from Israel. WAKE UP CALL: Questioning Mormonism: The Book of Mormon: Fraud or Fiction?

Please, feel free to show me the DNA evidence. Or any evidence that the Book of Mormon isn't just another Joseph Smith scam.

(if you wish to call me an anti mormon bigot, please know, I give all religion an equal treatment in calling out fallacies Pay Lay Ale!)

Where is your evidence that Moroni showed himself to Joseph Smith?

Please. (and don't refer to the Book of Mormon, that is circular illogic)

The information age is great, we can watch the temple rituals now that used to be secret, and realize they are just re-worked freemasonry rituals.

Nothing in the video is false, but it is creepy.

How come, in a LDS wedding, the wife gets a special name that the husband uses (at his discretion) to call the woman up to the celestial kingdom after she dies (and, of course after he dies)?

The man decides if the woman moves on to the next level? How sexist is that?
