For many the upcoming season is fraught with negative emotions, memories, perspectives, and ideologies. I have no doubt we will be subject to all many of pro-holiday season threads. I thought I'd start one for those of us who have, are, or will be fed up the whole affair now, soon, or post-holiday.

I personally hate the season. It was the time of year where my brother and I experienced some of our worst beatings and humiliations. Even past my family, who I disowned decades ago, I've yet to see anyone's family gatherings going smoothly. There's always one person, usually an in-law, usually a woman, who is mercilessly harangued for not being like everyone else and/or somehow being a horrible wife or mother. There's usually at least one big outburst. The hard feelings last usually throughout the year with no one recognizing that all the upset had more to do with the stress of the season causing people to overreact to so much....

I say loud and clear BAH! Humbug. I give gifts when I want to, not according to a calendar, and I know that they are both given and received with more genuine motives and emotions.

And to suggest that anything about modern holiday celebrations have anything to do with anything more than gift giving, really, is blind and naive.

I agree with you that holiday time is often depressing for a great many people. For some, it brings back unpleasant memories; for others it reminds us of all the people we love who aren't with us anymore; still others, of things we've lost.

I disagree with you, however, that the holiday season is all about gift giving. That, I think, comes from someone (you) who isn't particularly religious. Those tens of millions who celebrate their faith week-in and week-out most surely do celebrate the religious aspects of Christmas.

I spent so much time either in the army or working for them that for most holidays they were nothing more than a light day at work. Being retired now, it does seems kind of odd to be able to stay home instead of going to work or being on call. But I have been able to see Christmas in all sorts of places. I would say most bring back fond memories.
