Paul Harvey, "If I were the Devil."

Dry up with your self-serving 'dishonest' tripe. The translation was NLT (New Living Translation).

And if you need more evidence to help enlighten you there's this:

1 Cor. 9:3-18, My defense to those who examine me is this: 4 Do we not have a right to eat and drink? 5 Do we not have a right to take along a believing wife, even as the rest of the apostles, and the brothers of the Lord, and Cephas? 6 Or do only Barnabas and I not have a right to refrain from working? 7 Who at any time serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard, and does not eat the fruit of it? Or who tends a flock and does not use the milk of the flock? 8 I am not speaking these things according to human judgment, am I? Or does not the Law also say these things? 9 For it is written in the Law of Moses, “You shall not muzzle the ox while he is threshing.” God is not concerned about oxen, is He? 10 Or is He speaking altogether for our sake? Yes, for our sake it was written, because the plowman ought to plow in hope, and the thresher to thresh in hope of sharing the crops. 11 If we sowed spiritual things in you, is it too much if we should reap material things from you? 12 If others share the right over you, do we not more? Nevertheless, we did not use this right, but we endure all things, that we may cause no hindrance to the gospel of Christ. 13 Do you not know that those who perform sacred services eat the food of the temple, and those who attend regularly to the altar have their share with the altar? 14 So also the Lord directed those who proclaim the gospel to get their living from the gospel.

Well maybe next time use an accurate translation, not an interpretive one .... It's dishonest because the translation is assuming the text is saying something it clearly isn't, and it's doing so on the basis of interpretation.

As far as the text ... read more carefully .... It's about the apostles right to take from the collective fund, just like everyone else in the church, even though he's a traveling apostle and may not have contributed directly to the common fund, (you have to take this scripture in it's context, i.e. how the early church was organized) YET EVEN SO, they did NOT use that right .... (Paul was a tent maker). Also in verse 14, the word translated "their living" means literally that, i.e. what one needs to live, the bare necessities, they were NOT making money from it, the apostles that traveled had an EQUAL right to the common fund in the congregation the "things held in common" as everyone else there. Notice it says "eat and drink" not profit, not selling, not living well, and it uses the soldier example.

Paul Harvey said this in 1965. Chilling how it all came true.

If I Were the Devil - (BEST VERSION) by PAUL HARVEY audio restored - YouTube

Chilling how it all came true?

What - Paul Harvey is the Devil? :)

I don't believe in the Devil, never did, even when I believed in God. I was born and raised in a religious family. A HIGHLY religious family, not like the average religious ilk that most people know who lives a regular life and goes to church on the weekend. It was those same HIGHLY religious people who claimed to believe in God - they were the ones who severed by belief in that much.

So, if the Devil exists - he started by taking over the churches from the laymen up.

It began with planting the idea that "You can judge others" and "You have the right to condemn people for what they have done."

Harvey said a lot of stupid things over a long period of time. I think the OP found the stupidest.

By the way, if I were the devil, I'd dress up like a televangelist and say stupid and smug things in the name of Christianity, things like America is a Christian nation, and God is my CEO, and Jesus doesn't like lazy Welfare Queens and communists. Then I sit back and watch good people reject the gospel because of it. And I'd laugh with particular glee at those who didn't reject my fake Christianity, but rather actually joined my "church" of money and sanctimony and smug patriotism.

2 Thessalonians 3:10

For also when we were with you, this we declared to you: that, if any man will not work, neither let him eat.

It's hard to know where to begin with such a vapid laundry list of conservative obsessions. Besides the fact that he's criticizing capitalism and the free market for making stuff that people want (something apparently neither you nor he noticed), let's start with these falsehoods;

1. Nobody is praying to their Father in Washington.

People view presidents as gods.

2. Judges don't protect pornography, the first amendment does.

Despite my views that it should be allowed, I also recognize that it is terribly destructive.

3. Nobody is taking from those who have and giving to those who want, killing ambition -- our social safety net is in tatters and the rich are as ambitious and greedy as ever; working people are working harder than ever.

Lol, you say this as food stamp numbers continue to reach records.

4. Nobody is "confiding" that what's good is bad (whatever that means) -- except maybe rightwing Christians.

Except for drugs, gay marriage, gluttony, lust, and hedonism. Sure, nothing except that.

5. Students are more disciplined today than ever.

Absolutely false. Students get away with everything.

6. Promoting gambling as a way of getting rich is the essence of entrepreneurship -- are you sure you and Paul don't like that?

No, not at all. Please put away the nonsense.

7. We are producing more high quality books and movies than ever.

Which is why Hollywood keeps remaking movies that came out like 20-30 years ago!

8. Nobody is encouraged to do as they please in this society, except may the entitled rich.

Except that's exactly what everyone is encouraged to do.

This is just psycho-nostalgia, a foolish conservative longing for a time that never existed, as a dishonest way to distract us from the real problems we have. It's a type of Reverso-Meme: claim people are lazy even though they are working harder than ever; claim kids are stupid even though they are more educated than ever. And so on. Pure dishonest dreck.

Students are stupider than ever, give me a break.

It doesn't say 'from the collective fund." That's your self-serving assessment. It says, "..the Lord directed those who proclaim the gospel to get their living from the gospel." Period.

Dude, what translation are you working ... ???

Here is that scripture in the NRSV:
17 Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor,[e] especially those who labor in preaching and teaching; 18 for the scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain,” and, “The laborer deserves to be paid.”

The scripture has nothing to do with pay ... the early apostles didn't make money on the message, they all worked and contributed to the church just like everyone else.

The greek word, used is "double honor,"

I'ts pretty dishonest to use a loose, and bad translation to try and make a point that simply isn't there in the actual scripture.

That would be the translation used to defend those higher up in the church who were getting rich off of their "preaching and teaching".

Here's the thing about these sort of "predictions", of course that is what the "devil" would do in the eyes of someone who sees those things as bad. That doesn't make those things bad or immoral or wrong. It is like the mom from "Waterboy" calling foosball the "debil".

Why am I not surprised that you of all people would poo poo this. You can not deny that what he said in 1965 are happening.

Important to remember that the loons are never able to respond in the forum of ideas because they always lose in that arena. Rather, their response is is always ridicule and anger, personal insults and nonsense. That is Liberalism.

Always consider the degree of their ridicule and rage a bellwether of the accuracy of their target.

A repetition of Harvey's unsupported, knownnothing claims, as if repeating silliness makes it less silly.

Oh dear God, the Librals View Obama as messiah meme. You're actually repeating it here.

I said presidents, not Obama. Conservatives are just as guilty.

I said presidents, not Obama. Conservatives are just as guilty.

Well, that's progress.

Still, as much as I despise conservatives I really don't think they confuse presidents with the messiah. Nor do progressives. It's a totally false claim. It's natural for people to think highly of leaders they supported and who are carrying out their political goals. I don't think there's anything wrong with that, and it doesn't threaten my Christianity.

It's not about them necessarily seeing presidents as gods. Actually, to be clearer, I should have said the state as an institution, since people are more concerned with the state and seem to think that it can do everything. As such, they care less and less about religion and thus politics replacing it.

This has been debunked (on this site before as well if I recall).

This is not from 1965, whomever made this video and posted it on Youtube is breeching the 9th commandment to ironically further their religious cause.

Harvey did have a "If I were the Devil" essay in 1965, but it's quite different from this one. Every malaise he pointed to was contemporary with 1965 social ills, nothing prophetic at all. This video trying to pass itself off as Paul Harvey is based on an updated version of the essay from the 90s, which again was nothing prophetic for the times.

The info is below.

Meh... petty technicalities don't alter the validity of the message. Here's Harvey's original text (from the Snopes site):

===============================================

If I Were the Devil

If I were the Prince of Darkness I would want to engulf the whole earth in darkness.

I'd have a third of its real estate and four-fifths of its population, but I would not be happy until I had seized the ripest apple on the tree.

So I should set about however necessary, to take over the United States.

I would begin with a campaign of whispers.

With the wisdom of a serpent, I would whispers to you as I whispered to Eve, "Do as you please."

To the young I would whisper "The Bible is a myth." I would convince them that "man created God," instead of the other way around. I would confide that "what is bad is good and what is good is square."

In the ears of the young married I would whisper that work is debasing, that cocktail parties are good for you. I would caution them not to be "extreme" in religion, in patriotism, in moral conduct.

And the old I would teach to pray — to say after me — "Our father which are in Washington."

Then I'd get organized.

I'd educate authors in how to make lurid literature exciting so that anything else would appear dull, uninteresting.

I'd threaten TV with dirtier movies, and vice-versa.

I'd infiltrate unions and urge more loafing, less work. Idle hands usually work for me.

I'd peddle narcotics to whom I could, I'd sell alcohol to ladies and gentlemen of distinction, I'd tranquilize the rest with pills.

If I were the Devil, I would encourage schools to refine young intellects, but neglect to discipline emotions; let those run wild.

I'd designate an atheist to front for me before the highest courts and I'd get preachers to say, "She's right."

With flattery and promises of power I would get the courts to vote against God and in favor of pornography.

Thus I would evict God from the courthouse, then from the schoolhouse, then from the Houses of Congress.

Then in his own churches I'd substitute psychology for religion and deify science.

If I were Satan I'd make the symbol of Easter an egg

And the symbol of Christmas a bottle.

If I were the Devil I'd take from those who have and give to those who wanted until I had killed the incentive of the ambitious. Then my police state would force everybody back to work.

Then I would separate families, putting children in uniform, women in coal mines and objectors in slave-labor camps.

If I were Satan I'd just keep doing what I'm doing and the whole world go to hell as sure as the Devil.

It doesn't say collective fund, but any reading in context will show that THAT is waht they we're talkinga bout ... remember teh text said EVERYONE had the right to take the material things ... and the "living" meant literally "necessary to live" look in the origional greek ....

If you refuse to read scripture in context then you're refusing to hear God's word as intended.

Exactly ... Paul was poor his whole life ... he was educated, he could have been rich, but he worked part time as a tent maker, occasionally taking from teh churchh funds when needed ... the same with the jerusalem church, the apostles like everyone else held everything in common.

NO ONE made a profit from the Gospel, why? Because Jesus Christ himself banned it.

But none of that is actually prescient for 1965.

There are a lot of things added in the video to appear prescient towards modern society (celebrity leaders, euthanasia, prayer out of schools, nature vs. nurture homosexuality etc). Why did they lie about the nature of the video otherwise?

I think the that televangelists and other rightwing Christians are doing the devil's work -- could anything turn more people off to Christianity than these smug, sanctimonious, unctuous hypocrites?
Ahem... have you read any of your posts lately?

Nonsense. I don't know why you left-wing types always love to push socialism when everywhere it has been tried it's been an utter disaster.

Why are you denying the plain language of the NT about Paul? What is it with market evangelists and their idolizing of capitalism?

Spot on. But the market evangelists don't want to hear Paul's message. They have idolized capitalism.
