Does Tattooing and Piercing Reflect Turning Away From A Higher Diety?

When was the last time there was a thread about "jerks in geeky ass clothes"?
But there are plenty on here about tattoos with rants like yours.

Well boo ****ing hoo.

Why'd you get a tattoo of a tribal shark on your arm? What were you trying to tell "the world" about yourself?

Nothing, the world cannot see it.
If you do see it, you will know me well enough that I love the ocean and all things related.
Why do you think I live less than a mile from the ocean? For the pay? hahahaha

Half of my tattoos are religious in nature, ironically enough.

They'll start to fade after a about 20-30 years, but you can just get touch-ups every couple of decades and it'll stay looking pretty new. The newer inks that have been used in the past few decades don't fade quick like the ink of the past.

Just a thought...but if people get inked because they want to show how badass they are they are probably one of the ones that get inked because they have low to no self esteem.

Then why get a tattoo at all?

Why not a painting of the ocean, then? Why a tattoo?
I have them too. But I like tattoos. My father had them, I have them, my stepson has them now.
Impossible as it seems, we are all very sucessful people who are well thought of in our community.

Its not about "being" bad ass.
No more than a bad ass car makes you a bad ass.
But when you see some bad ass ink, you say. Thats some bad ass ink. Or, thats a bad ass car.

Oh, so you have multiple tattoos? What message are you trying to convey with them? Surely they all can't be hidden.

What the **** does that have to do with what I've been saying?

I have no idea what you're talking about. Why would anyone get tattoos to be badass, and why would that be directed at me?

Do they have to say something that means anything to anyone but me?
I mean, the "Rest Peacefully Mother" Tat is pretty self explainatory. As is "In Memory of Father".
The others, if people ask. I explain. If they dont ask, I dont go out of my way to explain. Nor do I care what they think of me one way or the other.

It's related to the pic you posted. It said "badass tattooed dudes".

with regard to that pic, when we're all old, the guy without the tattoos will be the one that doesn't look like all the other old bastards. Just sayin'.

It didn't say they got tattoos to be badass, so I think he's just making **** up for conversation's sake.

And I don't care, I'll leave a beautiful corpse.

You're trying to convey some message about yourself to others when you get a tattoo. There's no reason for "just liking" them if there wasn't some sort of image you were trying to convey.

This is true of pretty much everything we do to alter our appearance in some way. Why do you get the haircut you get? Probably because you think it looks good, yes, but also because you want people to get some sort of idea of who you are. What you think looks good is directly affected by the image you hope to convey.

You also ignored my other question, so I'll ask again, what the **** does you being considered successful by others have to do with what I've been talking about? It was such an inexplicably unrelated comment that I have to seek further clarification.

It didn't say they got tattoos to be badass....

No, it implies that people with tattoos are badasses, which implies that the perosn who wrote it thinks that getting tattoos makes people badasses or reflects their badass nature.

And I don't care, I'll leave a beautiful corpse.

Mine will be disgusting.

I personally don't want any tattoos, but I don't think they will be the downfall of society either.

You are wrong. Iam not conveying any message to anyone.
And many people look down on tattooed, or at least say they do on line, as being trailer trash or bikers or criminals.
If I have to explain my tattoos to someone, they usually just dont understand.

Mine will be disgusting.

If we're going to assume that only badasses get tattoos, which is still wrong, GETTING a tattoo doesn't make them badass, they're badasses that got tattoos. Your logic is fundamentally flawed, especially since nobody became a badass by getting tattoos.

If I got a tattoo, it'd be a picture of a towel (so that I would always bring my towel with me, duh).

.

Yes.

A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have.

Bull****. That's like saying that you weren't trying to convey a message to others when you decided your username.

And many people look down on tattooed, or at least say they do on line, as being trailer trash or bikers or criminals.

So what? If you weren't trying to convey a message with your tattoos (assuming you believe your own line of bull****), why should you care?

Is this your attempt to answer my question? Are you telling me that you have such a perception of victim-hood that me merely pointing out that tattoos are gotten in order to convey a message to the world, which is simply an obvious fact since every adjustment to one's personal appearance has been done to convey a certain message since the dawn of time, is seen as an attempt to "persecute" you for having tattoos?

If I have to explain my tattoos to someone, they usually just dont understand.

Ah, so you have tattoos to feel some sort of camaraderie with other people with tattoos and you seek to convey your belonging to that group with them.

You're reading is fundamentally flawed, as I very clearly wrote "which implies that the person who wrote it thinks that getting tattoos makes people badasses or reflects their badass nature."

I am not promoting any such belief, I'm explaining what the implications of such a statement are, not any specific belief or assumption being made.

Calm down.
I need no camaraderie with anyone over tattoos, my two best friends have no tattoos. Neither wife has tattoos.
And no, I am not a "message" type person. You want to know something about me? Ask, dont just judge what you think of me by my tattoos. Because that is what a lot of people do. Even on here.
That makes me a victim how? I dont care, it effects me not at all.

Calm down.

Where'd you get the idea I'm not calm?

I need no camaraderie with anyone over tattoos, my two best friends have no tattoos. Neither wife has tattoos.

So? You're trying to convey some message by having tattoos. You wouldn't have any if you weren't trying to convey some message. (although with tattoos being so mainstream, even not having one is often an attempt to convey a certain message).

People do not go out of their way to get things for no reason. Individual tattoos might have some personal meaning for you that has nothing to do with others, but the idea of getting a tattoo at all isn't the same thing as picking a specific tattoo.

Tattoos are totally non-functional alterations to one's personal appearance. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to have them aside from conveying a message to others.

And no, I am not a "message" type person.

Everyone's a message person. Some people are merely oblivious of themselves so they think they aren't.

That makes me a victim how? I dont care, it effects me not at all.

I never said it made you a victim. Clearly you aren't actually a victim of anything. You appear to have the perception of victimhood, though, based the fact that you jumped to the irrational conclusion that I was judging people with tattoos.

And you clearly have a victim-mentality going here. You jumped to the conclusion that you were being judged negatively by me for having tattoos based on me stating simple facts about tattoos (and t-shirts, and haircuts, and every other thing that people do to alter their appearance).
