It sure sounds like it to me -- a business sending a disabled veteran away because a group of foreign Muslims are offended by a tattoo that declares the veteran to be. . . not a Muslim!

Yeah, that's right -- the tattoo -- in Arabic -- declares that Eddie Bryant is a "Kafir", a non-believer in Islam. So what happened when he tried to go skydiving in Florida?
Find out @ Disabled Iraqi Vet Pays Price For Muslim Complaints About His Arabic Tattoo // Mr. Conservative

Disgusting! I hope there's a successful boycott of the company that did this.

Yep, that's definitely religious discrimination.

He's not trying to force his beliefs on anybody else, he simply tattooed his own body.

Definitely disgusting.

Agreed.

Muslims need to get used to the fact that there are people who don't want to be Muslim.

haha

as disgusting as that provocative tattoo

If the guy wasn't a vet would the story be treated differently?

No one would care.

The guy is a moron for getting such a tattoo.

My Arabic might be a bit rusty but that tattoo doesn't say "Kafir" it says "Ksafir", which isn't even a word. That long line shouldn't be there. It would be like me, an atheist, getting "Athiest" or "Atiest" tattooed on my leg. If you are going to get an Arabic or Chinese tattoo, you are setting yourself up to look like an idiot if you don’t do a little bit of research.

That said, if it is a private business they should be allowed to discriminate for whatever bigoted reason they want. As an atheist I wouldn’t get upset if a Christian business didn’t want me as a customer. I would just take my business elsewhere.

arabic has been seen as holy language by islamists and arabic alphabet has been used to write many other languages of the people who accepted islam

and thats why this tatto was so provocative..

taht guy wanted to provoke them

and he is also veteran

first participate in military operations made in iraq as if 9/11 terrorists were iraqi and then provoke them

haha

It is still not their (the buisness or the Muslims) buisness what tatoo the says or does, they can always ignore it. Having said that I am sure it was just set up to be another RW outrage. And why is a disabled guy skydiving?

He has the right to tattoo his own body in any way he sees fit. Personally, i think it's moronic that he would do something like that. I see it as similar to representing your Country in say the Olympic games, then getting a Chinese Flag tattoo on your chest. Strange indeed.

Still a little confused as to the message he's sending here.

“I am not a Muslim” or “I don’t believe in God”? (Kafir means someone who is a non-believer). Which is it? Does he even know?

Your Arabic is fine, it says Ksafir. The drunk snail just got a little carried away at the end ;)

So, declaring you aren't a Muslim is "disgusting" and provocative? Does that also apply when declaring yourself an atheist?

Letter "kaf" (k) can be stretched and still retain it's sound so when an Arab speaker sees the tattoo, he would immediately see the word "kafir" and nothing else. I would say that the stretching of this letter has been intentional to make the word more visible. The word itself is otherwise relatively short.

To appreciate the response (if at all true), "kafir" is now days associated by most Arabic speakers to mean an "infidel" worthy of ugly consequences, to put it mildly! Probably an equivalent of this vet's actions would be to have the words "666" tattooed on your forehead and walk into a church in the Bible Belt area and ask for directions! Having said that, I guess many Muslims would laugh out the "kafir" tattoo, as much as many Christians would laugh out the "666" tattoo, but on the other hand, some just might not!

Meh. You get a stupid tattoo that is meant to spark a reaction, don't always expect the reaction to be good. Being a veteran doesn't mean he isn't a dumbass.

Unless the tattoo was of Jesus's Crucifiction, and had a caption reading "LOL" under it, there's no reason for anyone to be offended by it.

Well, now we know how to offend you, shlunka! Everyone has his/her limits. For someone it's the Crucifiction+LOL and for the other it's the word "kafir".

Actually, I'd laugh uncontrollably at that tattoo :). For me, there is no limit, offensive = amusing to me. :)

Well, given yours and mine low number of posts I guess it's too early to say! Our limits shall sooner or later be exposed to the world, and that's a prophecy!

Come back when you can provide empirical evidence. :)

It is really hard to tell since it is one persons word versus another, but as a private business owner it is their right to turn away a customer if they are offending others. I personally probably would have asked nicely for him to cover it to appease the Qatari's, but if he refused politely I would have not pressed the issue any further. What actually went down in the private conversation is an unknown, so the only thing I can do is withhold judgement.

Having said that I have 6 jumps under my belt at Skydive Lake Wales, it is great drop zone, and the people (mostly instructors) I interacted with were fantastic (granted it has been years since I have been there).
