Pope Francis has opted for the simpler surroundings of the Domus Santa Marta hotel-style residence rather than the traditional palatial papal quarters

Pope Francis has decided to shun a grand papal apartment on the top floor of the Vatican's Apostolic Palace in favour of a modest two-room residence.

His spokesman said he was "trying out this type of simple living" in a communal building with other priests.

In doing so he has broken a tradition which is more than a century old.

The decision reinforces the newly-elected Pope's austere reputation. As archbishop of Buenos Aires he refused to move into the Bishop's Palace.

Preferring more modest accommodation, he also often cooked his own meals.

He eats and prays with the staff and shuns the regal trappings of past Pontiffs. Really bothering many traditionalists.

Really bothering many traditionalists.

There is nothing to support this is the article you citing. You have no reason to say this. It isn't true at all.

Good for him! Another of the Pope's titles is the "Servant of the Servants of Christ." It's good to see the most recent man to hold the position act like it for a change. :)

Also, I'm pretty "tradtional." This doesn't bother me in the slighest.

I'm not a Catholic, but he seems like a decent man and a breath of fresh air.

I'm not Catholic, but I find myself liking this Pope. Props for humility and simplicity.

I am Catholic, and I am very pleased to see his humility.

I haven't heard or read any complaints.

Mostly praise from those conservative, liberal, and elitist Catholics (yes, I have all three) in my family tree.

He's a good man. Hope he changes the ship around.

What's actually sad is that the Pope NOT living in the lap of luxury is news.

This is what he did in Buenos Aires too. He lived in a little apartment and took the bus to work. Really when you think about it, it shouldn't come as a big surprise. A Jesuit would be used to communal living with other clergy. That was the lifestyle he chose when he became one. It's his comfort zone.
