It is a honest question, one that been bugging me for days. If you look at almost every talk between two groups that involve religion, it gets attacked by the other side. When it come to religion everyone gets hostile, whether it affect them or not.

And on that note movies and tv shows religious people are normally bad, or stupid. just saying. Is Holly Wood anti religious?

So I ask once more, when it come to religion, why can't everyone stop being hostile?

I think that's pretty true of anything that people care deeply about, from politics to sports to religion.

Religionists like to say a lot of things that tend to incite a hostile response. Honestly they bring it on themselves.

Things like

- "You're going to burn in eternal hellfire if you don't do what I want you to do."
- "You're an abomination for being gay, marriage was made by god to be between a man and woman"
- "I'm going to try to use my religion to influence politics so that my morality can be forced on you."

Religion and anything people have a strong emotional connection to result in people having their feelings hurt very easily. And there is a lot of frustration that originates from cheap tactics in argumentation; such as zingers, broad generalizations, arguing something completely different that is easier to shoot down and pretending it had to do with what you said, the list goes on. In less-emotional discussions these sorts of things have less impact on a persons mood.

Also, many religious debates usually result in someone attacking someones intelligence and/or arrogant statement's that turn circular... which is never good for debate.

The anti religion crowd is hostile. I believe these people fear the possibility that God does exist. Their hostility is an emotional reaction born out of fear. Their attack on the religious is an attempt to shoot the messenger, an approach which has rarely proved effective in other situations in human history.

Religion will always be with us.

I think this might be a little accurate, but both ways. It is, in general, a fearful subject. What you you think if there was no God?

I, honestly, view the concept terrifying. I battle with the question almost ever day. My general consensus of my reasoning leads me to be a Theist/Deist, with the one i would call "God" is order and chaos---> something that was able to make something of nothing and have a paradox of both order and chaos existing at the same time. The laws of the universe shows perfect order, but at the same time everything is complete chaos.

What is nothing? and how is it possible to come from nothing. Some physicist can prove that our universe actually does sum up to nothing. We have evidence that energy can literally come from nothing too. The stability of a Hydrogen atom is at a slight wobble because of the amount of charged particles popping in and out of existence. It seems, you can borrow energy from nothing just as long as you return it back in a very VERY short amount of time. Now is nothing actually pure chaos? And the somethings come out of nothing is what we call order? The order amongst chaos is what I call god.

And then there are the atheists who like to paint all religion with a broad brush.

not everyone..

Because generally, the non-religious and/or atheistic think that the religious are stupid, and the religious think that the non-religious and/or atheistic are either unenlightened or doomed. I frankly don't care what anyone else believes (or not), as my philosophy is to live and let live. There is generally no mutual respect for each other, but it's essentially no different from politics, in the manner in which it is viewed.

I consider it ideological tribalism. As soon as we consider ourself as part of any group, we form double standards for evaluating the world based upon whether something is perceived as being part of our tribe or not part of our tribe. I think this is a tendency pretty much hard-wired into us, but the expression of it does vary widely among individuals.

Well for one - regardless of who says what - if it affects politics or the actions of others on a large scale it DOES affect everyone - even those who don't believe.

I try to cap my attitude - when it's not possible I try to explain exactly what I'm irritated with. I have more of a problem with church leaders, for example, than the followers in most situations. The leaders tend to be the ones who have made the decisions in the past - or now - that are questionable and even offensive.

But often things just irritate me - religious mantras, beliefs and people sometimes just irritate me when they use it instead of logical thinking. Not EVERYONE is like this - a vast majority of religious people aren't like this. These, therefor, aren't the ones who stand out and get under my skin. It is personal *to them* - and they keep it that way. Therefor - most people don't have a problem with me (outwardly at least) and I don't have a problem with them.

My irritation flares when situations happen and the only response is 'have faith in god - cast your cares on him' . .. Whenever I talk to my mom about my personal/family issues her advice is always the same - 'go to church, look to god' - - that's not advice, that's ignoring life and hoping that someone else will help you out. That doesn't FIX problems. I see that as the equivalent of sticking your head in the sand. Not helping.

It does no good to try to dictate everyone's lives according to one's doctrine when we're living in a country in which everyone's permitting to follow whatever they feel is right for them.

Keep your religion out of the law, out of the science class and away from my front door and we're cool.

That is mostly televangelist, most religions will leave you alone, until they knock on your door or something, in that case you can politely tell them to just leave and they will.

Hell is made up, it is not in the Bible. It was came up with to scare people into joining during the dark ages. That is coming from a bonafide priest.

My religion, and probably others, directly tell you to seek out knowledge, both Earthly and Divine. None of my debates that was about religion ever attack anyone's intelligence, they said religion was a lie, but my intelligence, nor anyone else was ever attacked.

I know the felling my mother is like that to, to the point it would even drive our bishop away. I was taught that you should do every thing you can on your own and the Lord will pickup the slack. But she said let the Lord do everything it gets really obnoxiousness.

Here's a prime example from another thread:

A woman was fired for having pre-marital sex. Many religionists run around doing things like this, then turn around later with bambi eyes wondering why people are so hostile towards their religion.

Except for the people who put their religion in politics by creating and supporting morality laws, or opposing basic human rights for gays. Or people who do things like I mention above, firing people who don't fit their code.

Most religionists try, one way or another, to shove their religion down everyone else's throats.

Religion has inspired some people to do great and good things for mankind...

I have a deep admiration for people of faith who use it as their inspiration to do good deeds everyday.

My beef is with people who would use religion as a justification for war and murder...

And on this board moreso... An excuse to ignore scientific reality.

Those extreme Christians who scorne evolution and support things like Young Earth Creationism are a good example of this.

I admit i believe that pre-marital sex is wrong and stupid (I just insulted a lot of people didn't I), but the reason for that is based on Earth knowledge. Pre-marital sex is how aids (and other std) is manly spread, and how children came into the world when the parents are not ready, leading to kids that turn out bad, do to being neglected, or the kids grandparents raises them, putting a lot of stress on the grandparents.

In fact most christian values have earthly scene. Probably most religions values have bases on earth, not just christian values.

By the way my high school president got expelled for having sex, her boy friend would have been expelled to if he went to our school.

My signature agrees with you.

Yep, you believe what you believe. Just don't be confused about why so many people seem hostile towards christianity in general.

I share your beliefs. There was a force that created the Universe. That is god. Religion comes from the wildly improbable assumption that the god that created the Universe is hanging around this planet and killing kittens if you masturbate. To create the religion business, you have to imbue people with fantastical "faith" and pump it up so much that it becomes an emotional issue instead of a practical issue.

If I'm wrong, and the creator of the Universe is actually watching me, then all I have to do impress it would be a good human being. I doubt that what I use for underwear, the length of my beard, covering my head with a skullcap etc. would be much of an issue to such a powerful force.

I think this might be a little accurate, but both ways. It is, in general, a fearful subject. What you you think if there was no God?

That answer is obvious, people don't like being told "NO".

Exactly.

I don't believe that someone has to be religious at all in order to be moral, decent or squared away in life.

There are many non-religious reasons to avoid premarital sex, stay married, have kids only when you're ready, stay in school, don't thieve and steal, etc . . . sometimes I get the impression from some religious people that they only avoid bad behavior because god would disapprove.

I don't believe in God but I'm not ****ing my neighbor's horses, you know. . . unlike my sister who - when I was 14 and had my first 'boyfriend' - I told her I thought he was athiest and she said "I don't believe he is - he doesn't believe in having sex with his mother, does he? Because if he was really athiest then he'd DO that kind of stuff."

See - people just think that morality and Christianity (or other belief) goes hand in hand.

Seeing as how I was molested during my childhood by members of my father's church - that's far from true at all.

- "I'm going to try to use my religion to influence politics so that my morality can be forced on you."

Who said these things? Please provide some sources. I've sat in a lot of Christian churches, associated with a lot of Christians of various denominations, and watched a great deal of Faith-based television programming and I've never once heard anyone say anything remotely close to this.

Perhaps someone is overgeneralizing a bit..............or simply employing some hyperbole and hubris to garner attention and to incite emotion?

Hey, I'm religious, but I would never say things like that. Don't attack me, okay? ;)

(But I understand where you are coming from, as there are religious people who would say these things, so your point is well taken. I'd just like to say that generalizing occurs on both sides.)

Two reasons.

1) Religion is a very personal and arguably the most important factor in one's life (to some more important than family).
2) Many people develop hostility to outsiders or view points that are not aligned with their's; this usually happens through being raised in a heavy religious enviroment, or is developed as a result of conversion to another religion.

People are afraid to be challenged or confronted with the fact that they may be wrong.
