From the book of Corinthians:

"If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears.

When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love."

Very nice, but hard to square those words against the violent history of the Hebrews, Yahweh and Christianity.

Personally I prefer the King James

13 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.

3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.

4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,

5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;

6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;

7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.

10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.

11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

Well, frankly, it's hard to square the history of people like Stalin and Mao with the nice ideas expressed in communist ideology, so I guess it all boils down to the fact that just because humans are imperfect, it doesn't mean that ideas are flawed.

Agreed. But the article's title wasn't "Beautiful Ideas" it was "Christianity summed up beautifully".

I object that these scriptures sum up Christianity. How much do these flowery words mean to a witch or heretic burning at the stake, an Aztec or Incan murdered for not converting to Christianity or a Jew whose tribe was hounded for 1500 years?

Your stepping out of line here.

You must have missed the part where it says love "keeps no record of wrongs." :2razz:

Or how about just gays and women, even within the last 60 years.

It would have made more sense if it said "Pagans should keep no record of wrongs of Christians".

Just interpret it so it suits you agenda.

that's how it's done after all.

You gonna call the cops on me?

No. But you are crossing the line. Any line. From decency to historical accuracy and reality.

If you look at history, the original Christians of the first century were like sheep led to the slaughter during the persecution by Rome and others. They lived by these words and Christianity perservered.

By the fourth century AD, Christianity became the official religion of Rome. Rome was not the official secular of Christianity. Rome was the overdog. The Christian church changes, more in the image of Rome. The mass was spoken in Latin and even Pagan festivals were added. The new Church did like Christ had said; it rendered onto both God and Ceasar, with the Caesar aspect of the church tough, ceremonial, powerful, empire, senate (college of Cardinals), wealthy, cruel, rational, artistic, scholarly, etc.

By about 1500 AD the composite Caesar-God church, like a cell preparing to divide, began to separate the secular from the Christian. Germany which led the birthing pains, later spawns the Emperor Hitler. The German goose step and salute was used by Rome. Hail Caesar. Little by little secular factions leave the church, allowing it to approach true spirit of Christianity.

Good analysis noob, hang around.

I hardly see how hypocritical radicals within a religion could possibly invalidate a belief system. Those who killed the Incas, and all the other historical atrocities you mentioned, were no more a good representation of christianity than Charles Manson a representation of the human race. There will always be individuals who misinterpret religious texts, but these individuals should never be used as an argument against the principles of a religion.

Huh?

Burning at the stake for pagans, heretics and enemies of Christianity was the POLICY of the Holy Catholic Church. Forced conversions or DEATH was the POLICY of the Holy Catholic Church. Discrimination, retribution and harassment of the Christ killers (Jews) was the POLICY of the Holy Catholic Church. And many Protestant religions followed suit.

Maybe YOU need an agonizing reappraisal history lesson.

"The sons of God saw the daughters of men, and they were beautiful."

"The sons of God saw the daughters of men, and they were beautiful."

That's a good one, we could do weeks on angels coming down from heaven and raping the poor human women.

But it's right there in the Bible.

BTW - I think they're beautiful as well. God forgive me.

And yet, not practiced by the republican made born again evangelicals. THIS more than anything separates the Christians in this nation FROM the born agains evangelicals
