Questions about Buddhism? Ask away!

No they aren't. And the only thing on my agenda is to see how knowledgeable the OP is or if he is just another hippy who turned to a new religion out of some bull**** reason. He is the hippy.
It is not my fault the OP lacks knowledge.

I find it hilarious that you assume that you know me, what I know, and why I converted. I've been a student of both religion and philosophy for as long as I can remember. And my reasons for converting were completely philosophical and spiritual. Now, I'm not sure what the point is of calling me a hippy, other than attempting to arouse some sort of anger in me, which won't work. You can make all the assumptions you want to about me, but rest assured, you don't know me, or anything about me. The only thing you're doing is showing your ignorance and bitterness, for what reasons, I don't know. But since you're only point is to attempt to derail the thread first, and push some sort of anti-me/anti-Buddhist agenda, I will no longer respond to your posts. So you can take your arrogance and ignorance elsewhere.

I don't assume that I know you, I just know your religious type. You are a very complex being with numerous nuances on all sort of things.

I am not trying to push any anti-you or anti-buddha agenda. I have no such thing. I was just trying to establish what kind of a buddhist were you. The "hippy" kind or the real kind, the scholar kind. The one who takes the painful time of reading up on numerous aspects of buddhism and trying to see how they got implemented in the world, and the only way to see that is by reading history. You are not the scholar type. You are the hippy. This ofc is just part of who you are. You are much more than just the religious part of you. Like buddha taught you.

I actually like buddhism as a religion. Or rather, I have more respect for buddhism than I have for other religions... like mormon religion or numerous evangelical religions. I wouldn't turn to buddhism for all the riches in the world... but then again, buddha gave birth to buddhism despite having all the riches in the world at that time :p.

To the OP:

Be Here Now?

If anyone has any questions about the religion of Buddhism, feel free to ask them here, and I'll answer to the best of my ability. However, only respectful questions asked for those who truly want to learn about the religion will be answered, in other words, I'm not going to waste my time with people making accusations of idol worship or devil worship.

I took quite an interest in Taoism in my teenage years along with other eastern philosophies, but I never quite understood the point behind buddhism.

If the point is to give up one's personal will to the universe, than one may as well not exist, because one's personal will is the spice of life and ultimately what a person is at their core. I would abhor not existing or being an automoton.

Explain what you mean by one's personal will to the universe.

Siddhartha - "When all the Self was conquered and dead, when all passionsand desires were silent, then the last must awaken, the innermost of Being that is no longer Self - the great secret!"

Personally, that sounds like it would totally suck. I love being me.

To each their own. :)

Dude, you need to work on your anger issues. Calm the **** down.

Why do hippies upset you?

Do hippies still exist? LOL!

I couldn't be more calm as I wrote those lines.

Buddhism doesn't really have any use for gods. But, Buddhists believe that some are reborn as animals. And the first Buddhist ethical precept is to do no harm to any sentient being. Buddhists value all life, which is why Buddhism denounces things such as abortion, war, and capital punishment.

So you classify Christians this way? Hippy- Christians being what, 95% of those claiming ot be Christian, with maybe 5% who get really deep into academic Christinaity (not just teaching Sunday school) ? It's such a strange distinction, it's loaded with negative connotation, all the while you're claming you aren't really behaving that way. Labeling someone that negatively while admitting they are far more complex than the label, is anti- no matter how you make your emotional appeal.

He's Buddhist. Not Hippy. Not hippy-Buddhist. I don't think that's a recognized way to describe these "very complex beings" in a respectful or even moderately descriptive way.

If a buddhist who had decided to change his religion from buddhism to christianity and came and said to ask him questions about Christianity and he couldn't asnwer the same question under the pretenses that where given, yes, I would call him a hippy.

People are complex beings. This in undeniable. The fact that in some areas people are very simplistic doesn't change the overall complexity of the human being. You are complex because of the human condition makes you a complex being.
